Our group used the Colonia Express to travel from Buenos Aires to Uruguay for a day trip and honestly although some of us had some issues trying to work out ticket buying situation online, the entirety of it ran pretty smoothly. From immigration to the boat and transportation between countries worked in our favor. As a 21st century girl it was evident some people weren't happy they did not have access to wifi on their boats as some children had tantrums from lack of IPad accessibility and some adults couldn't make phone calls but I think if anything that lack of social media checking can be used to truly reconnect with those traveling with you! Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay... It's a couple-hour ferry ride from BA to Colonia, and then you can continue on by bus to other areas or not. We chose not because this was meant to be a day trip and another stamp on the passport. 100% recommend if you have the time - I need to add some Uruguay locations to Yelp because it is so gorgeous there!!! It is totally giving coastal European summer vibes. NOTE: Get to the station early even if you already have tix!!! It was packed and not only do you have to get through security, but customs for interviews too. This took wayyyyyy longer than expected, so I'm glad we arrived with time to do all of this and get coffee - tho it was still a photo finish to board the ferry. The big boat was crowded but there were plenty of seats, or you can go outside with the TikTokers. There's a duty-free shop which was super crowded the entire time. Locals were stocking up on chocolates and liquor. No coffee or food service. A day trip was perfect to walk the cobblestone streets, shop, eat, and lounge on a patio for drinks while a band plays, sailboats drift by, and the town dogs sit at your feet waiting patiently for a pet or some of your food. Heading back was less crowded or stressful. Still lots of lines but the only rush was to return to the AirBnb and change for dinner. We had a great experience with Colonia Express. We wanted to do a one day hop over the Colonia from Buenos Aires, and I was slightly nervous about how this might all pan out... But everything went very smooth! We showed up about 1.5 hours before our desired boat, and bought a two tickets with card (we didn't buy the return because we couldn't decide when to come back, and she said there were plenty of seats on both choices of boat times) There was a little cafe in the lobby where we had a light breakfast. Then the customs area was smooth, and boarding was only 10 minutes late. The boat over was a smaller one, and fairly empty. We just read and snoozed ( it was really hard to see out of the windows, they were not clear glass, kind of a bummer) The way back was a little more hectic. We showed up and bought our ticket, but the line to go through security was a massive crowd of people shoving and cutting. The line sort of made 2 figure eights and there were no stantions or anyone guiding at all. I was pretty stressed we wouldn't make it through in time. We boarded the boat right before they closed the door! Lucky it seemed to be running about 15 minutes late also ( probably waiting for people in the LOOONNGGG line?) This boat was MUCH larger, and almost completely full! There was a duty free shop that was so incredibly packed, I couldn't get by it to get to the restroom. Overall, the way there was so peaceful, the way back was stressful, but we got to and from our destinations pretty much on time, and pretty hassle free, and safely! read more

I took their ferry from BA to Colonial and their bus to Mountvideo. I'm very impressed with the efficiency and service. The ferry ride is uneventful (and that's a good thing), it left on time and the seats are comfortable, and there are plugs to charge your phone/tablets. The cafe on the ferry have a good selection of items to choose from, including coffee and sandwich. I wish they have a restaurant for some hot food, but the ferry ride is only 70 mins, so no big deal. The bus ride from Colonial to Mountvideo is fast and efficient, you leave the ferry, jump on the bus and in 2 hours, you are in Mountvideo. First things first, the ticket price was good. The major negatives was the check in process. There was no organization at all. There was an express check in kiosk but first we though it was only for Argentina's and uruguaynian. Turned out you could use your reservation. The departure was delayed by 1 h 20 minutes. But they didn't accommodate for the delay with the return trip. I will not use this service again I would pay more for Buquebus. read more

Nerve wrecking experience. We bought a day tour to Colonia, the boat broke and got towed back to Buenos Aires. Lack of maintenance. A nightmare of 4 hours between arriving and failing. Manager was extremely rude. Got photos of smoky boat being towed. read more
