This place offers a welcoming and supporting atmosphere for you to better your technique and truly enjoy the art of dance! I started dancing when I was 4 years old with Lesly Makings, one of the main ballet teachers at Northeast American School of Dance. I eventually moved away from the area and am now back. I've taken dance lessons from numerous teachers in different parts of the world but Lesley is simply the best. There is no drama about the art of ballet but rather she teaches a straightforward class with a focus on bettering your technique and advancing your overall personal abilities. Her classes are a mix of ages... the Tuesday night, Friday night and Saturday morning classes range from highschool students to women in their mid fifties. There are even a number of men that occasionally join the class. Everyone has different levels of experience but the choreography adjusts simply to your own abilities. It's a very positive atmosphere for you to feel comfortable in. Overall the school seems to have very interesting class offers so in the case that ballet isn't your thing, there are definitely options to explore. I highly recommend trying out ballet though even if you're just a little bit curious - this is the perfect platform to do so. It's a great alternative to going to the gym and trying to tone with machines and an excellent way to better your posture and confidence. I believe there is a beginner intro if you're not sure how your coordination would apply to ballet. Give it a try!

When I was in 2nd grade, I told my teacher I wanted to become President of the United States! "But sweet girl, President is a man's job", replied Mrs. Pietuszewski. Well, fast forward 30 years and I'm not President (yet), but I am a man. However, not everyone is as quick to recognize my masculinity as I am. That's why Last Ditch means so much to me. This is a space where I've met tons of unique, impressive, powerful women. Best of all, these women accept me for who I am. You might think being a man at a "lesbian" bar could feel a little exclusionary... not the case at Last Ditch. When my mask is on and I'm dancing the night away, it doesn't matter whether I'm butch lesbian or trans twink. In that moment, I'm just a human surrounded by other humans who care about the immunocompromised. When I get back home, I take off my prosthetic hog and N95 mask (in that order), and I feel accepted and encouraged for who I am. Thanks Last Ditch.

We walked into a building that is modern and elegantly designed, spotlessly maintained, and organized in a way that made navigation intuitive across the three floors. The collection spans three floors and covers fossils, dinosaur skeletons, mineral and gemstone specimens, and an extensive dinosaur track collection with particular connections to the Connecticut River Valley, which produced some of the most significant dinosaur trackways in North America. The dinosaur material is the centerpiece. Two full mammoth skeletons, a T. rex skull, and a range of other fossil specimens give the collection a visual impact that larger natural history museums with more resources and more famous specimens would be proud to have. The dinosaur tracks are a specific strength and the connection to local geology adds a regional dimension that makes the collection feel distinct rather than generic. Staff and professors associated with the collection were present and willing to answer questions in depth, which gave our visit a more engaged quality than a self guided tour at a larger institution typically offers. The museum is free and open to the public, which makes it an easy addition to any visit to the Amherst area without any planning required. For a small college museum that delivers a world class fossil collection in a beautiful modern space, the Beneski Museum of Natural History is a hidden gem in western Massachusetts and well worth a stop. At this time I've never taken hip hop lessons before, but was really excited to try them. But when I got in, I felt unwelcomed from the start. I'm the type of person who can usually break into any social situation well, even if I don't know anyone. But in this case, everyone seemed so closed off.. including my dance teacher, Brendon. He was so uninterested in getting to know me. He'd always let us ask questions, but whenever I asked or didn't get something, I was ignored. I felt like he didn't care whether or not I fell through the cracks. The only good thing about this class was that Brendon played dope music, but that was it. The other two girls in my class totally ignored me. I'm sure they weren't trying to be mean, since it seemed like they knew each other. But it was just uncomfortable and made the classes unpleasant. This is a great place if you've been here for years and you get tons of attention. But if you're new, good luck!
