At times it can become crowded but it is well staffed with knowledgeable locals who seem to give good, impartial advice not only with regards to Everglades City, but also of the surrounding area. Besides books and brochures, they also have t-shirts and other souvenir items. One tip I would suggest if you don't mind 22 miles of rough dirt road through the wilds of the Big Cypress, is to inquire about the Loop Road, however, if you have a car or the conditions of the road are bad, you might not want to do it as it can become very muddy, rutty, or sometimes horribly dry and dusty. The plans are to pave the Loop Road which will unfortunately and most likely end up turning it into a popular tourist attraction, detracting from present wild and primitive features that may presently be experienced.

We pulled off the road here hoping for a map. Twenty minutes later, we had a pile of maps and brochures, each annotated with her thoughts on where we should rent kayaks, where we could take them, which ones would portage us where, where we could hike in the Fakahatchee Strand, and how we might be able to track down the ranger to do so. We were also treated to her views on what dates we should come back for other activities, how alligator meat compared to frogs' legs, and where we should stop for food and entertainment on our way home. (To be sure, she didn't actually have a copy of the most helpful-looking map we wanted, but she did give us directions and maps to a ranger station that had them, complete with instructions about how exactly we should march up to the second floor and grab one if nobody was around.) She managed to do all of this, by the way, while simultaneously helping several other visitors make purchases, acquire directions, and otherwise be oriented towards the Everglades. If she's working when you come through, you will have every bit of information you could possibly need. The Everglades Chamber of Commerce should give her a medal.

By 1889 the Storter family owned what is now Everglades City. For years the only way to reach it was by boat. Barron Collier came to the area in 1907 and he developed real estate in the area which led to the construction of the Tamiami Trail which broke ground in 1915. It is the southernmost road that connects Miami to Tampa and it takes its name from both cities. When the Tamiami Trail went broke, Barron Collier offered to finish paying for it in exchange for this new county in Florida bearing his name. The road opened on April 15, 1928. Once the road was completed the city sprang up and things were prosperous in Everglades City until the Florida land bust of the 1920's that was caused by hurricanes and the Great Depression. The town of Everglades became a city in 1953. Today fishing and tourism are the main occupations. There are a lot of restaurants that serve up Florida's favorite winter treat, stone crabs. This area is a great place to explore on a day trip where you can eat fresh seafood and take boat rides through the Ten Thousand Islands. While on my way to Everglades City I spotted this historic marker in front of a gas station. It tells a little about the construction of the road and thanks Barron Collier for his contribution. If you want to learn more about the construction of the Tamiami Trail, there is an excellent movie about it shown in the free history museum in Everglades City. Everglades City was the headquarters for the construction of the road. I love to come down here for the stone crab claws and hiking through Big Cypress Preserve. It was fun to find this sign and learn a little more about the Tamiami Trail. Bonus, the gas station has restrooms which are few and far in between in this remote part of Florida.

It is located in the parking lot of the gas station where State Road 29 crosses the Tamiami Trail north of Everglades City. The marker reads, "The Tamiami Trail links the two great cities for which it was named -- Tampa and Miami. It bridges the everglades, tying together south Florida's Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Its official opening on April 25, 1928, by Governor John W. Martin climaxed thirteen years of planning and working. Florida is indebted to Captain J.F. Jaudon, whose faith and persistence kept the project alive; to the intrepid trail blazers, whose trip by car across the trackless everglades in 1923 dramatized the need for the highway's completion; to Barron G. Collier for his unstinting aid, and to others whose time, energies and talents made this tremendous feat possible." [Review 12363 overall, 2149 of 2019.]

I also remember when Goodlette Road stopped at Pine Ridge, and there were these strange concrete pilings at the corner of both roads and where the train tracks continued north past Pine Ridge Road. We never really knew their meaning or their purpose when we were kids because there was nothing there to explain what they were. I only learned about their meaning over the past 20 years. As Naples has grown over the past 5 decades, I know I'm not the only one who has forgotten about Plot N the thousands of times I've driven by it in my lifetime. I'm ashamed to say it. I won't forget now, and I'm definitely going to be telling more people about it. Today, I finally took some time to come back here and pay my respects to these forgotten souls. I was pleasantly surprised to see a dedicated plaque from a local Boy Scout Troop explaining the history and significance of Plot N. There are 8 new, beautiful markers that say "Rest In Peace" on each one. The entire area looks well managed with new landscaping. The Troop who rededicated this plot needs to be commended for preserving and honoring these original Neapolitans who richly deserve to be remembered. I hope they put another sign on the opposite side of the post that faces the parking lot for South Street so more people would be aware of what is there. I'd bet 99% of people who shop in this plaza have no idea of the significance of this little strip of land. If you've lived in Naples for a significant amount of time, I'd recommend everyone take a moment to visit.

A map from 1944 that plots out where graves are located has this spot labeled as labeled 'Plot N 8 Negro Graves Unmarked'. In the 1930's Naples was home to less than 3,000 people. Most of the people who came to Naples were wealthy snowbirds from the north. Only a few people lived here year round. It is believed that the people buried here were involved in the building of the railroad. Naples like all of Florida was segregated. African-Americans of the time worked as laborers laying the railroad tracks, logging, farming and domestic work. A train used to run where Goodlette-Frank road is today which is why it is thought that the people buried here had something to do with the railroad. It is believed that people who are buried were possibly killed while working on the railroad. With no permanent records it is unlikely that the mystery of who is buried here will ever be solved. Another site listed as plot W was paved over before any examination for graves was ever done. Plot B is the Rosemary Cemetery which has a wrought iron fence around it and is in the parking lot of a CVS. The city restored that site in the mid nineties. Paved over and lost graves is not an unusual story in Florida. As cities grew they weren't always precise in moving graves before building. Unless someone can find documentation or do ground penetrating radar, how many people are here and who they were will remain a secret.
