During my journey towards getting healthy, someone recommended speaking to Jessica Begg at Shift…read moreNutrition. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Jessica made me feel comfortable discussing some uncomfortable and awkward stuff (eating habits, eating issues, etc.), and was very thoughtful in her analysis, while still managing to make me feel at ease and capable of working through the changes I needed to make with my disordered and restrictive eating, so I could normalize my intake patterns. She showed me visually how my meal plan would break down, and talked me through the process of what to expect. There were a few simple do's and don'ts, and she made sure to allow a lot of flexibility, while also ensuring I never once felt guilty or upset about the problems I was working through with her. I saw her for 3 sessions in total, with her promise to follow up in a few months to make sure I was still on track. Each session was comfortable, we discussed the meal plan, any problems I'd been having, any possible fixes we could implement, and most of all, she was able to put into perspective the reasons why we may internalize certain incorrect messages, and then reframe what we're telling ourselves about body image/eating habits, making it a lot easier to approach eating in a healthy way, that wasn't so fraught with risk. Now, I'm eating in a normalized range, and certain foods don't have the same scare/guilt factor they once did. I now know what it feels like to be hungry, and to have my metabolism working normally, and to have energy to burn. Overall, I'm a lot happier with my body than I used to be. I'd recommend Shift Nutrition to anyone who needs to make a positive change to their relationship with food. Jessica's a dream, and her service works wonders.

I would give zero stars if I could. I was scheduled for an appointment with Jessica today but was…read morenot able to connect virtually because of issues logging into the meeting. Jessica didn't call me to see why I was late or if I wanted to meet by phone. She just sent me an email 15 mins into our time slot letting me I would be charged the full $180 for missing the appointment. I asked her to reconsider given the circumstances and she ignored my request, didn't respond to me just went ahead and charged my credit card instead. I am beyond disappointed in the way I was treated by a supposed care professional. I was so looking forward to this appointment and feel turned off the whole industry as a result of this. I couldn't possibly recommend anyone work with her.

For a work team-building activity focused on nutrition and wellness, we went to a cooking class…read morehere. We signed up for a class that would teach us vegetarian and gluten-free recipes that are healthy and wouldn't be too difficult to make ourselves. I'm always looking for easy recipes so I was looking forward to taking this class with my colleagues. The space isn't large and our team of 15 people filled the room across two tables. The instructor was very knowledgeable about nutrition (I think she said she was a cook at one point in her life) and explained how each dish is prepared, what the nutrition of each ingredient would provide, and substitutes available for ingredients to fit our dietary needs, e.g. vegetarian. She showed us how each dish was prepared and a tv projected what she was doing at the cutting board or stove so that everyone knew what to do. In teams of 4, we would prepare the ingredients (dice, slice, chop, marinade) and cook them as well. All the ingredients, condiments, and equipment were provided. The instructor came and gave us tips as well. At the end of the class, we got to try what we made, which was great. In that class, we made vegan pad thai without fish sauce. I have to say that without that classic fish sauce, the dish fell flat for me. I would be interested in taking other classes with her in the future, but probably ones that involve meat or seafood!

They run series throughout the year and classes are constantly changing. If you're like me who learns best by doing with a bit of help from others, these classes are a good fit for you. The two classes that I have been to were "Cook Once Eat Healthy All Week (a plant-based intro to batch-cooking)" and "Un-Junk Your Kitchen: Healthier, Cheaper Homemade Staples," both of which have been informative and interactive. Andrea and Ellexis were both knowledgeable and made the classes more than fun. The best part was that got to eat what was demoed or what we made ourselves! I'm looking forward to attending the rest of this series.
