The thing…read moreabout many smaller, late night supermarkets is that things can often be overpriced so if you run out of something late at night you end up paying a fortune for it. Not so here. The majority of their product is reasonably priced. You can grab a litre of milk for $1.25. Other positives about Marion Foodland IGA include the fact they have lots of staff in the store at any given time which means not too much waiting at checkouts. You know that annoying wait at late night supermarkets where only one person is on the checkout and there are ten people line up - not so here. Parking is always easy here and they have a good selection of deli products. Their bakery section is quite small but adequate and the fruit and veg section is pretty good too. If you have a late night emergency and live in the Marion area, I recommend this supermarket.

IGA has a very community-oriented marketing slant, but I still prefer to shop at smaller, more specialised outlets like butchers and small greengrocers. There are plenty of snacks range here, perfect for school lunch boxes, picnics or a snack sneak in the movies (you didn't hear it from me!), but do be weary as I found the mini chocolate buns a bit off and almost resembled that famed fungi sandwich that was going for thousand bucks on eBay! Still, there are some products worth looking at here. Make up, Coke, chocolates, Meggles eggs and dog food usually go on a very good offer. I guess it pays to be a smart shopper. I doubt I will buy something that has a 6 months expired date on it. Each to their own I guess.

As for the non edibles you can't go wrong as it's the cheapest place to buy party plates, storage containers, freezer containers, etc. When I was first introduced to Rite Price it was close to Halloween so I stocked up on trick or treat items - we give the items to the neighbours so we know what the kids were being given - but when the kids opened their goodies and started to eat and drink them, it didn't go down very well. So what was a good idea didn't end up being successful. I now rarely buy drinks or food items from here as I don't like the taste of the drinks either - now that I know - it's like they've been sitting out in the sun or more like a hot truck all day. And about the only edible items I do buy on occassions is pickled and tinned foods, as I can be sure they're safe to eat and the other is balsamic vinegar in the spray bottle, great for salads. The stock does change from time to time so if you are not in a hurry it's worth checking out, go in there with your shopping list and if no luck then go to the regular supermarket. So unless there's a famine this is not my regular place to food shop. Kamini is right as it's great for bathroom and laundry essentials and a few other items, if you dare.

Another thing I noticed with the new changes is that they now have a man whose sole purpose is to hand you a basket on the way in (it is freakily starting to remind me of China where I saw someone whose sole job was to help trolleys off escalators). Anyway it is a nice feeling to be welcomed and handed a basket. The other change I like is in the fresh food section. The smallgoods and seafood areas have lovely coloured tiles behind them that, at least, make you feel like you are in a real market. The produce is beautifully displayed on ice to try and make you feel like it is fresh but they don't fool me. I only go here for such foods if I can't make it anywhere else. I personally don't like buying any fresh produce from supermarkets. Anyway it fulfils a need. The supermarket, in general, is well laid out and airy so at least you don't feel claustrophobic. It has a good selection of just about everything but in recent times I have become aware of home brands taking over all the shelves so it is hard to find the real brands. The other interesting thing about this supermarket is that in summer there are often lots of tourists from overseas doing their grocery shopping which is always entertaining.

Mind you it doesn't take me all that long to chose my tea because, well, I generally like traditional tea with some flavour as opposed to herbal infusions. The Outcome : Jackpot! I stumble upon Ang's Café at Marion Westfield and have unknowingly discovered a gem of a coffee shop that I'm sure to visit again. Having made purchases at the Seafood shop on one side of Ang's and the Health Food Shop on the other, I just couldn't be bothered walking to any of my normal haunts so in I went only to discover this place was a WINNER. There isn't that much in Woolworths that we need, but it still makes us happy to pay a quick visit every once in a while after work. Everything you need in a grocery store is here. I just wish it was as big as the Wal-Mart I saw in Texas. Depending on what you need, you can spend anywhere from $10 to $120 as you exit the store. By the way, I scored a brand new computer desk lamp for only $19.95!! Where else can you buy such a thing for a low price? That's half the price of the lamps that rip you off at other places! I needed one desperately for my long hours of yelping in front of the computer because the old lamp that served me for 15+ years finally ran out of globe life. If you hunt properly, you can actually find some great grabs for less than $5! They're always doing low-price promotions here! I love it! I don't usually carry much cash, but that's okay! There are plenty of those swiping machines for you to use now, when you've collected all your items. Yay! God bless the staff in green for helping everyone out when they're stuck on the swiping machines, as we walk out. God bless this new invention for supermarkets! I wonder if any other non-grocery stores will take this concept on? So I walked out with new boxes of tissues for my hayfever in less than 5 minutes. In and out. If only I had more cash for groceries, I'd actually love this store because they are the number one most profitable supermarket business in Adelaide, and none of their competitors come close to the amount of profits "Woolies" make every year. And I must commend the staff in their green uniform, thank you for the friendly chat when I needed to decide which orange juice to buy, and the difference between the Aussie juices and the imported juices. However, this depends where you are exactly. If you're shopping on the upper level (there are only two levels), then you have a very slim chance of being helped in the aisles (no-one's there!), and that's not right because that's where customers need the most help = finding things! Nevertheless, I ALWAYS find myself drifting back and forth inside here everytime I'm in Rundle Mall. I confess, I'm a certified Woolworths regular.

The only supermarket in town that opens again after midnight, it was like a beacon of hope for all those international students who had come to Adelaide not realizing that most places closed at 5pm and there was literally nowhere to go at night in order to shop. It has gotten better since back in those days, with shops opening up to 7pm or 7:30pm I think along Rundle Street, but back then, you'd go to Coles in chinatown after 12 and you'd see mostly asian people walking through the aisles, not necessarily to buy anything, but just to walk amongst potentially purchasable goods. I'm not one to judge, as I used to be one of them and really do appreciate Coles giving me a place I could go to in the middle of the night. Since moving away from the city, I have found an IGA near my place that never closes. Normally when I'm preparing a meal like the one above I'll visit this Asian grocer. It's pretty much just up the road for me, and while there are better stocked and friendlier stores around I guess I'm just a slave to convenience. That's the sad thing about the place. The staff seem very indifferent to you unless you speak their language. I've stood at the counter for sometimes up to 10 minutes because the person serving is speaking to the customer in their native tongue. It's never anything serious either as it always comes across as pleasant. Now I don't really care what language they're speaking (I'm an ESL teacher, so I understand how life can be dealing with another culture), but I do take issue to being forced to wait and then whisked out the door when it eventually becomes my turn. The store is well stocked, though it's a little smaller than other stores a little further out. Either way I manage to get my cooking needs here at good prices. I'm not a major stickler for customer service and it really does take a lot for me to notice, but I do notice this.
