Everybody needs a local late night supermarket and the Marion IGA Foodland is a good one. The thing…read moreabout many smaller, late night supermarkets is that things can often be overpriced so if you run out of something late at night you end up paying a fortune for it. Not so here. The majority of their product is reasonably priced. You can grab a litre of milk for $1.25. Other positives about Marion Foodland IGA include the fact they have lots of staff in the store at any given time which means not too much waiting at checkouts. You know that annoying wait at late night supermarkets where only one person is on the checkout and there are ten people line up - not so here. Parking is always easy here and they have a good selection of deli products. Their bakery section is quite small but adequate and the fruit and veg section is pretty good too. If you have a late night emergency and live in the Marion area, I recommend this supermarket.

IGA has a very community-oriented marketing slant, but I still prefer to shop at smaller, more specialised outlets like butchers and small greengrocers. You'll find end of date, expired products or deleted lines here…read more It's the best place to stock up on laundry and bathroom essentials, let's not forget the rolls of cheap toilet paper you can get your hands on. There are plenty of snacks range here, perfect for school lunch boxes, picnics or a snack sneak in the movies (you didn't hear it from me!), but do be weary as I found the mini chocolate buns a bit off and almost resembled that famed fungi sandwich that was going for thousand bucks on eBay! Still, there are some products worth looking at here. Make up, Coke, chocolates, Meggles eggs and dog food usually go on a very good offer. I guess it pays to be a smart shopper. I doubt I will buy something that has a 6 months expired date on it. Each to their own I guess.
Rite Price is known for its out of date or soon to expire food items so if you're fastidious about…read moreexpiry dates, then definitely check before you buy. As for the non edibles you can't go wrong as it's the cheapest place to buy party plates, storage containers, freezer containers, etc. When I was first introduced to Rite Price it was close to Halloween so I stocked up on trick or treat items - we give the items to the neighbours so we know what the kids were being given - but when the kids opened their goodies and started to eat and drink them, it didn't go down very well. So what was a good idea didn't end up being successful. I now rarely buy drinks or food items from here as I don't like the taste of the drinks either - now that I know - it's like they've been sitting out in the sun or more like a hot truck all day. And about the only edible items I do buy on occassions is pickled and tinned foods, as I can be sure they're safe to eat and the other is balsamic vinegar in the spray bottle, great for salads. The stock does change from time to time so if you are not in a hurry it's worth checking out, go in there with your shopping list and if no luck then go to the regular supermarket. So unless there's a famine this is not my regular place to food shop. Kamini is right as it's great for bathroom and laundry essentials and a few other items, if you dare.

I was always a bit intimidated by asking about things at supermarkets - after all, if you can't manage in a supermarket in your hometown then you're not really going to make it in the real world are you? But the staff are so friendly and helpful that they made my fears go away. It's not the biggest foodland so sometimes the range suffers a bit compared to the bigger supermarkets but there is still a fairly big range there. Produce is incredibly fresh with everything from lettuce, cucumbers to tomatoes, apples and bananas. They also even have there own bread products in store with turkish bread being a particular favourite of mine. The key difference between buying fruit and vegetables from this store as opposed to the other stores, is really the quality. Just a note however, the store can be very crowded on weekends and the aisles are very skinny. They have there own little trolleys to use around the store however you just need to be careful of the entrance and exit door as there are people constantly fluttering in and out of the store when it is busy and there is very little room to get in when other people are going out.

I once discovered a half strawberry (clean cut) in a reduced punnet, where presumably the bruised part had been cut off. Easy peasy parking. Standing at the entrance to the North Adelaide Village, if you haven't been in you'll probably think to yourself: "there's a supermarket in there?" Enter the "stucco cave." Ohhh "the switch..." If you're paying by card, the EFTPOS screen displays "checking" and "savings" on the opposite side of their respective buttons... Set in the heart of Norwood shopping district and with a huge fan base, this groceries store has everything to offer. You are greeted at the entry by the large Deli section, fully stocked with the most amazing cheeses, meats, salads, roast chickens and seafood. All the produce is fresh and ready to be packaged up for you to take home. The staffs in the deli section are always busy! You will need to reach for a number as I almost guarantee you will need to wait your turn. They are happy for you to try different sliced meats and olives, so do not hesitate to ask to assist with your decision. As for the fruit and veg, it is generally well priced and fresh. You will find a good organic produce section here with a larger than normal. The fruit and veg are always arranged quite neatly and during the busy periods you will find staff constantly re-stocking. Like most Romeo Foodlands, you will find a very diverse range of products from around the world and a lot of locally sourced goods. They are very South Australian proud and I have found the most amazing local products here. One thing to mention about this store is the amazing bakery section. The bread, rolls, pastries and cakes are all of very high quality and are baked daily. You will find all different types of sourdoughs, rye, baguettes, pizzas, loafs, etc... This is a newly built facility that has two levels of underground parking-free for the first couple of hours. A spacious, clean elevator takes you up to the ground level store entry. A separate elevator will take you up one more floor to really nice modern, clean bathrooms. But, alas, no Dyson hand dryers :-( Note that there is a very nice independent butcher shop just before you enter the Foodland-I'm a big fan of it and their WILL be a review soon. The Foodland store is so clean, bright and well-stocked it almost hurts the eyes, but you adjust and move on with your shopping. We usually go on Sundays, after taking The Casper (our dog) to the beach. Another reason we are a fan of the (cool) underground parking. On Sundays around noon, they are always busy, but not so busy that it's hard to make your way up and down the isles or that you feel like you are in the way when it takes you a couple of minute of browsing to find just the right kind of tuna in a can from the 700 different varieties on offer. The selection is excellent and you shouldn't have any trouble finding your favourite items. That's not always true at our neighbourhood grocery store. Once, when we were after a large quantity of a special item on sale we asked if we could get a couple of cartons from the back. "Sure," was the cheerful reply and quick-as-a-wink they brought it out for us. At most stores you can't even find someone to help you, much less this kind of customer service. Kudos to Foodland employees. With all this goodness, there is a downside to shopping here. Once inside the new, well-built store you get NO mobile phone signal. Nothing, nada, zippo. So no checking email, messages, calling home to ask about something on your shopping list, checking prices online, looking up a recipe's ingredients online, or using your phone like a walkie-talkie and doing team shopping. This is an egregious oversight that could be remedied, for the most part, by putting in a free wireless hotspot. But, except for shutting off contact with the outside world, this is a great grocery shopping experience. Eat, drink and be merry-but not too much. JD
