How cool is the Colebrook Store? It dates to 1812 and Is the oldest continuously operating general store in Connecticut. No wonder it's listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They sell fresh made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches. They serve breakfast and lunch (including, soups, chili, salads, etc.) all day. They sell groceries and beverages plus a very tempting variety of baked treats (eclairs being a specialty!). We picked up two sandwiches to bring along to our afternoon visit to the Norbrook Farm Brewery, and what awesome sandwiches they were! My $5.95 Roast Beef Sandwich boasted ¼ pound of meat on my choice of bread (I went with multi-grain rye), a choice of cheese (Pepper Jack), and my choice of freebie veggies to crunch things up (I gluttoned things up and went for lettuce, tomato, hot peppers, onions, peppers and pickles). The result was one fantastic sandwich that was a terrific value! We perused the gift store and scooped up a hard to find 4-Pack of Stewart's Diet Orange Soda, and we split one of their famous eclairs later that day. Eclairs are only sold on weekends or by special order. Yes, it was delicious. Finding the Colebrook Store was another reason that I love Yelp. It's off the beaten path and a distance from Route 8, so unless you are specifically headed there, it's unlikely you would ever find it. But we sure were glad we learned about it and were even more glad we shopped there. It really is a treasure.

If you want to get off the grid for a sandwich, the Colebrook Store is the place for you. It's nestled into the Connecticut hills, which makes it a pretty drive in the fall (and at other times of the year, if you enjoy green leaves). The appeal is definitely the store itself - it's cozy with a few places to sit inside and outside, with something new to see in the decor wherever you look. They also have Colebrook trivia cards, which will make you more curious about what the area once was - What, in Colebrook Connecticut, would a Nazi spy find interesting enough to come for?

Excellent lunch! Steak with mushrooms, onions, and cheese on a tasty roll, yummy chili, and an amazing minestrone soup on a rainy day! Brought home a " just out of the oven" plum/blackberry pie", so delicious with a beautiful decorated crust! Highly recommend!

It's unusual for me to give 5 stars based on a single visit, but I think this place deserves it. First let me thank my fellow Yelpers for pointing me to the Colebrook Store. I travel on nearby Rt 8, but would never have found this place without your help. This place is a country store in the heart of Colebrook, CT, a community of about 1400 people. I used it as a lunch stop and was glad I did. I am a pastrami fan and when I saw the pastrami reuben on the special board, it was a gimme that would be my lunch. The reuben was delicious. I was so anxious to eat this sandwich, I forgot to photograph it for this review! The place was full of friendly folks ... and that included the store staff. Service was great. Want to hear the negatives? My sandwich was just off the grill when it was delivered to our table. I had to let it cool before I could eat it. We chose an outside table to eat at. The local flies also expressed interest in my reuben. Hopefully, you didn't take either of those negatives with any seriousness. It was a great reuben. Lunch here was a great experience.

Fabulous everything! Well, worth the trip. The ambience, the food, the people. Went out of our way and so glad we did.

The store is often out of advertised items…read more The produce (fruits and vegetables) section is abysmal with many empty cases, and the items that are there are oftentimes wilted and moldy. The fresh fish case, which used to include three separate sections, is now down to one section. When we were in earlier this week (02/02) there was one (just one) tuna steak and some farm-raised salmon -- no other fish. The side case, which holds the smoked salmon and other packaged items was barely refrigerated. On a prior visit (01/28) the fat-free milk available had "best before" dates of 01/22 and 01/25. Doesn't anyone check the sell by dates on fresh milk? While they have improved some of the lighting and the signage for the aisles over the past six months or so, the store is still regularly dirty and the layout is very poor. There are "pop up" manufacturers' merchandising displays blocking items on the shelves. Last month, one of these flimsy cardboard (and top-heavy) merchandising racks toppled over with its items strewn all over the floor. Other times, we have looked online ("browse aisles") to make sure an item was in stock as well as its location within the store before visiting -- only to find upon our arrival that not only is the item not at this store, but that you are no longer carrying it. When we showed the online listing to one of the store's employees they merely shrugged. Also, twice in the past few months we "clipped" online coupons and added them to our Go account, purchased the items, and later looked over our receipt only to find that the discount was not applied. There is never any more than two (2) manned checkout lanes opened at a time and the self-checkout terminals are antiquated, making it virtually impossible to have a smooth, uninterrupted checkout experience without the need for someone to come to "unlock" the terminal, review your last scanned item, and check the bag staging area. Absolutely maddening. Now we understand that on any given day there might be an issue or an inconvenience we would need to deal with -- a late stock delivery, a shortage of employees due to sickness etc.; however, at this location the issues are ubiquitous and systemic and store-wide (not relegated to one department or offering).

The Torrington location is great. Stands out amid sadder versions of Stop and Shops and Big Y stores in the area. Service is terrific. Selection ample. Feels like I'm "getting something" for my investment. Just a cautionary tale: For all of the new shelving, floor tiles, paint, and displays, there comes a price. And just because it's merchandised expertly - it doesn't mean it's worth the value it's priced at. IE: Hellman's mayo, is Hellman's mayo at any store. I love the store. I love that they have an array of Central NY brands (Hoffman's, State Fair/Speedie, etc). But I always make two lists: what are the wants from Market 32 and what are center-store grocery needs that can be purchased for 20% less elsewhere.

Overall, a solid grocery store that makes weekly shopping pretty convenient.
