Dont know what to think about this place. The ice cream is standard between the branches. However, at the time I came here, the place smelled heavily of bleach. It was a bit off-putting and a door should have been opened for air circulation. The seating was really sticky at the time. Perhaps they were busy and did not have time to wipe down the seating - which was very limited. Not a great experience overall and I am not even talking about the ice cream. Cold Stone is pretty well known now, but for the price and the quality of what you are getting is not very pleasing. I haven't been to a Cold Stone in a long time. My daughter was having tea next door, so I decided to try some Ice Cream. The staff was not very friendly at all when we went in. I picked one of the signature items on one of the posters to try. I remember they use to take their time and make it in front of you, etc. They did make it in front of me, but the person basically threw it all in and was done in like 30 seconds. My family came here and no one acknowledged us until we asked to order our ice cream and we're then rudely told to sign where their sign was supposed to be but wasn't because it was apparently broken. All problems were eventually corrected, but without any flourish or sincere apology. This place was dead on a rainy Friday night. We troop in with our 7 kids. No one else is there until we're finally leaving. You'd think they want to make this experience amazing so we will keep coming back, and then my kids may return with their own kids one day. There are lots of Coldstone Creameries to choose from nowadays that are equidistant from our house: Olney and Gaithersburg are just as close as this Germantown place and the parking is much better at both of those. Customer service is everything. If you have a product that practically sells itself, invest a little in your human capital and get a line out the door all the time! The least you could do after trying twice in a row to overcharge me is offer to buy one of our like it's or give me a card for a free treat on our next visit. Why should I come back here? At this point, I'm not likely to return to this place to buy our 9 products in the future. I'd rather hit the Olney location. They are so friendly there! If I could rate no stars I would. I had horrible customer service from the manager. They served others in line before us. The manager said it's their policy to only help one party at a time. That must've been about 3, maybe even 4 years ago. Now, in 2016, I figured I'd try it out again after having dinner with a friend at Sabai Sabai. It was a wonderful experience. We were so happy. I wish I had gotten the name of the gentleman who filled my order. He was tall, African American, kind of long black hair I think. He was so nice! I asked him if the Oreo Overload was good and he gave me an honest answer. He asked how me and my friend were doing as he mixed the ice cream, made conversation, and seemed like he really enjoyed what he was doing. I even made a point to tell him that he was the nicest person I had seen working there. He told me it's hard not to be nice and have fun while you're making ice cream. I like that kind of attitude! I ended with up with a peanut butter cup perfection. It had chocolate ice cream with a large peanut butter cup and a tablespoon of peanut butter. Holy mackerel that thing was good. What kind of people would go prowling the streets of Germantown in search of a frozen confection in those conditions? But wait! A parking spot long enough for a 15 passenger van suddenly opens up directly in front of Cold Stone. Nine figures, their faces obscured by hoodies and the mist rising from the sidewalk, emerge and dart through the darkness. The sweet syrupy smells floating in the air of the tiny, nearly deserted shop warn of a deliciousness level maybe too great for the smallest of them...but they continue undaunted, their hearts beating faster in anticipation of the next stage of their adventure - sampling flavors! Blue cotton candy tries to draw them in, but to no avail! It's color can't deceive these seasoned agents - it is TOO sweet! Mint...yes cool green mint with chocolate chips is a likely suspect. And sweet cream! They aren't fooled by it's inconspicuous nature, sitting innocently in the back row...a flavor that until this night has been unknown to our intrepid taste testers will be taken in with it's accomplice peanut butter cups! And of course coffee is under their watchful eye, with its rich and deep flavor and enough caffeine to keep a 10 year old up until midnight! The mission seems to have been accomplished. But our head agent remains on guard. Something isn't right...their bill doesn't line up with what they see in front of them. The apologetic server tries to make it right but again something is fishy! Only after the third attempt does the punishment match the crime, as they say!! This is my favorite Cold Stone. I have fond memories. When I would finish an evening class at Montgomery College, I would go to Cold Stone for a pick me up. Ice cream was always good, service always polite and friendly. I've tried so many of their signature creations and the servers are patient as you try flavors to know what you want. They're very patient with kids, regardless if I had 1 kid, all three, or just the over eager toddler. My new current routine is an Elevation Burger and then walk over to Cold Stone, grab and ice cream and walk back. Parking hasn't been a real issue for me, whether it's in front or around the back behind the building or even in the next parking lot over. As my reviews have stated many times I have a sweet tooth and chocolate is my game. Cold Stone is okay. My issues with it is that the their banana splits aren't that great. To delve further into it the ice-cream tends to have ice crystals on it so you don't really get a smooth scoop and the bananas aren't ripe. That's a terrible combo for a banana split. The end result is a dessert that tastes like mediocre ice cream with plantains. I love plantains fried and with other hot foods but on ice cream not so much and it's not the cheapest place out there for ice cream. Portions don't really match the price tag. read more

When I asked if they had a banana split ice cream I was told they don't make those anymore although they have everything besides the banana boat to still make it. It's a Cold Stone, which means you'll get decadent ice cream treats. Yummy, but not real good for you. This one's in the heart of Germantown Town Center, right across from the library. It's street parking only, which isn't too bad when it's not busy. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth going every once in awhile. Staff is nice, but a little slow (at least when we went there, and it wasn't all that busy). Beverly first tried to charge me over $21 for the 2 quarts. When I pointed out the sign, she went to get help. I told her to go ahead and ring up the one man waiting first. She then proceeded to try and ring up the whole line while my quarts melted. Even after getting help she kept insisting on charging me more than the sign said. She said I was buying 2 "1 quarts". Ummmm....newsflash - you don't sell 2 quart sizes. The sign also had a price for 3 quarts. You don't sell those either. I am not surprised that these two stores can coexist. I can see people going out of the way getting ice cream for a special occasion or as a treat. I can see people getting FroYo after dinner. It has me thinking, why have I seen such an explosion in FroYo places, but not the same with ice cream parlors? To answer, I did some investigated journalism and consulted with firsthand and secondhand sources. First, I need to gather information about the bountifulness of both types of treats around Montgomery County. Using my accelerated memory and my immense knowledge about all things MoCo, I can recall a time 5 years ago, when FroYo places were not that popular. Now frozen yogurt places populate every mile within Montgomery County: Sweetfrogs, Yogicastle, Caliyogurt, Menchies, 16 Handles, Pinkberry, Red Mango, Tutti Frutti. Give me coordinates point within MoCo and there will be a FroYo place within a mile radius. However, ice cream parlors are not nearly as bountiful as their FroYo counterparts. One can quickly do a search using google maps to see that ice cream places just are not popular. Baskin-Robbins are somewhat popular, but Baskin-Robbins alone cannot compete with eight FroYo franchises. I could think of four Cold Stone locations: Germantown, Gaithersburg, Olney, and Silver Spring. What it boils down to is that FroYo is trending up, ice cream is not trending. This trend reflects the overall culture shift on health in America. By definition, ice cream has to have at least 10% milk fat; whereas, frozen yogurt can have less. FroYo is the healthier choice, FroYo has more fruity toppings, I won't feel as guilty if I eat FroYo. Americans are so fixated on health nowadays, but obesity level is still increasing. Millennials consider being healthy consists of exercising daily and eating right. Gen X and Boomers say it's how you look. It's no longer good enough to be skinny to be considered healthy! You must exercise consistently, drink your kale smoothie, and chug your protein shake twice a day. In addition, when was the last time you picked up FroYo at the supermarket? I don't know of anyone who buys FroYo at the supermarket. Part of the appeal with going to FroYo places is the array of toppings. If I was to make FroYo as tasty and delectable as ice cream, I would have to buy ten additional toppings: popping boba (where would I even get that), kiwi, blue berries, Captain Crunch cereal, Oreo's. People still buy ice cream from the supermarket because there is no need to buy any other toppings! Ice cream is freaking delicious by itself. Lastly, self-serve... People love self-serve. I can design my own FroYo with a king gummi bear sitting on a throne of strategically placed cap'n crunch cereal? I can layer yogurt, then toppings, then yogurt. At Coldstone, the workers take the self-serve equation out and do it themselves. They control how much ice cream I get, they control how much topping I get. I don't particularly mind that Coldstone does it for me and I don't think most people mind... but there's something appealing about self-serve with customers. Customers love choice. Customers love being able to dictate what they want and how much they want. Even when I go on dates with "indecisive" girls, their indecision goes away when they serve their own FroYo cup. If I could self-serve my own Chipotle burrito, you can bet that guacamole would be oozing out the the tortilla from all directions.. those pricks are so stingy with their guac! Like all things in life, if you are going to do it, do it right. Get consent, wear a condom, and make her feel loved. If I want a dessert, do it right, get ice cream. My best friend Presh and I go to the Germantown location as well as the one in Gaithersburg. The ice cream is beyond Delicious,but the servers must be taught the importance of using the proper utensils to serve customers. Servers should never use their fingers to pick up toppings to put on anyone's ice cream. We both had our ice cream remade. I just find it disgusting,and it is not like a pizza where the heat actually kills the germs.
