Coin Star is is network of machines located in mainly grocery stores and Walmarts. What they do is they convert your coins into cash for a small fee (11.9%) and or if you chose to load the money into a gift cards from say Amazon or Best Buy; there are no fees.
I'm in the cash business so occasionally someone will pay me in quarters. (By the way here is a fun fact $10 in quarters equals about half a pound) Sometimes I just keep them and spend them to the dismay of the clerks. I once gave a clerk at Kroger $36 in rolled quarters. It's also fun to pay for your $4.65 latte at Starbucks in quarters. When people ask me where I get them I always say I sing at the local train station for rent money...
This Coin Star at this particular Kroger is quite popular and about 50% of the time it's out of order. Once I used it to cash out a bunch of change and it just went nuts. SO the Kroger service desk ended up giving me the cash without charging me the fee which was nice.
Another feature to Coin Star besides getting cash or a gift card is you can donate to your favorite charity. The charity varies from place to place. My favorite charity PETA is not on the list....
