Many times I've driven by Leicester Country Club and never gave it a second thought. Having never been there, I thought it was a private club, since it looked so nice from the outside. Finally, two weeks back, I went to LCC with a friend...and I was pleasantly surprised at how well maintained the course was, well laid out, and for the price, a bargain! The people in the clubhouse and bar area are terrific, very down to Earth, and this Sunday, my birthday, will be my third visit in three weeks. I hope to have enough to buy my first-ever membership in the Spring!

Also, the rough is thick and leafy, so I lost a few balls I would likely have found any other time of the year. But, again, these are to be expected in mid-October. The course is laid out nicely and offers a challenge while not killing you in the process. The scenery was fantastic. You just can't beat autumn in New England! The staff was super friendly and helpful. Greenskeeping crew were very polite and respectful of the golfers. Price to walk mid-week was reasonable.

The amount of…read morepeople who come to the parking lot in the fall just to take in the leaves and view of the reservoir is a geographical testament- but the course is immaculate even with the surrounding trees losing leaves. Everyone I have interacted with is polite and incredibly helpful - the pricing of their annual memberships is incredible given the quality of the course (and VERY competitive with other clubs in the area) - and the Ross Tavern has never disappointed us. We have had the pizza in winter while using the simulators many times, and the weekly specials are always tasty and seasonally appropriate. Special mentions to the butternut bisque and beef stew in a toasted bread bowl - both of which were specials!

Other than that, we really enjoyed the course, although the front nine was a little tight and can be unforgiving; you really have to be in control of your shots to keep it on your fairway. We found the staff from inside the clubhouse and the staff managing the tee times were fantastic, professional, and very accommodating. As u can see, it was a picture perfect day for late October.

Last few times we played, the rounds were ridiculously long and we ran into some really obnoxious people. We just finished the 11th hole, and didn't realize they changed the layout. 12 now went straight up the hill to the right. Again, we didn't realize this since it was the first time playing after the hole layout change. So people were on the par 3 green and one guy started screaming at us as we hit our drives. "Get off my tee box, Get off my tee box". He drove the cart over screaming and cursing. Tried to calm him down saying we didn't know but he kept on, "this is my tee box". Frigging moron. A simple, 'next hole is over there' would have sufficed but no, he had to make a big issue over it. Anyway, last two times we played, we left after 9 holes, and after 15 holes. Too slow play. No ranger, no beverage cart. The course is not in very good condition. Seemingly nobody repairs ball marks. Tee boxes with crab grass so high it's hard to find a spot to put your tee. So basically, the pace of play, course condition, and some people with attitudes will keep me away from this place. Hope you fare better.

A private Donald Ross gem--compact, challenging, and beautifully maintained…read more Whitinsville is a classic 9-hole layout designed by Donald Ross, and it's one of the best kept secrets in New England golf. The course is private, but if you ever get the chance to play it, don't pass it up. The routing is brilliant, with rolling fairways, subtle doglegs, and fast, tricky greens that demand precision. Conditions are always top-notch, and even though it's just nine holes, it feels like a full experience.

Newton Hill is a fairly new, 18 hole, Chainstar-basketed course. I went here with a couple of…read morefriends to check it out, on what turned out to be a chilly, but almost a near perfect day for a couple rounds. First impressions: This thing really is a hill. A big one. If you feel like you need to get some work on your legs in, this in the place to do it. The course winds up and down and around the entire side, dropping you off feet from where you started. The holes average to be about 300 (give or take) feet, with a couple of outliers (155 for the shortest and 420 for the longest). It looks like a lot of effort was put into getting this upland in order. Based on the number of times one of us tripped, they removed a good number of small (inch-ish thick) trees to open up the holes a bit. As you walk, keep your eyes open, but that tends to be the case in most of the courses one might play in a wooded area like this. I noticed a good split of left and right banked holes. More right then a lot of the courses I've play in the Mass/CT area. Which I found to be good for me, as it gave me plenty of opportunities to work on my (right hand/backhand) anhyzer. The signage was sufficient, but could use improvement (which is what I have heard is in the works). The same goes for the tee pads. Most (if not all - don't remember for sure) have rubber mats but no framing, but that really isn't an issue in my opinion. Just an aesthetics thing, which come summer, when the trees all have leaves again, doesn't matter anyway since I can imagine the place being pretty enough. Overall, I don't think too many of the holes really stand out, but it was definitely a solid course. The changes in elevation adding to the challenge on some holes, either forcing yourself to throw short and not over drive on the down slopes or making you put the extra bit into getting it up there. With some of the tighter gaps, it also works accuracy about more then those courses with the large open fields. Personally, I could see myself enjoying this course while getting a little bit of practice on some of the basics at the same time (hyzer / anhyzer / low, level, and straight). As it is, I'd say Newton Hill is a 3.5 star course, but I'm going with the 4 for the potential I see in it once it is completed. I am eager to add this nice new addition into my course rotation and look forward playing it again.

Course flows nicely around the hill and is relatively challenging. Lots of broken glass at the hole near the basketball courts so if you bring your dog keep an eye out!
