I have to admit that a little bit of the five stars I'm going to give Bridge View B&B is because I was somewhat of a rude guest, in that I arrived over an hour late after getting side tracked driving across Ireland then having my rental car locked in the parking deck across from Smithwick's Brewery (that one closes at 6PM - the 11PM one is up the street). Despite all of this, our hostess Eimear accommodated our tardiness and was very pleasant throughout the whole experience. That's reason enough to book this homey B&B, with the comfortable rooms and ideal location (along with metered parking nearby). The B&B sits right on the River Nore minutes away from a very convenient pedestrian bridge to downtown Kilkenny. The rooms are modest, with comfortable double beds and private bathrooms. The breakfast is delicious and made to order from the menu at the tables. Very much a mom and pop vibe, as Eimear made our breakfast (her husband is a musician we heard play at the Kyteler's Inn the night before - a small world indeed). The place is cash only, so be sure to have enough for your stay - if not, there are ATMs across the aforementioned pedestrian bridge. Overall, when I come back to Kilkenny I'm coming back to Bridge View B&B, and I promise this time not to be so late.

This place hands down was the highlight of our Irish lodgings. We found the property on Airbnb…read more It's a 300 year old thatched roof cottage. 2 bedrooms (a master with a queen bed and another room with twin beds) one bath, a family room, and a kitchen. It just looks and feels what you think of when you think Irish Cottage. The cool thing is you can stay there for 2 nights and you don't have to rent the whole week...although you definitely should. And will kick yourself like I am for not spending more time there. In 20 minutes you can walk the parimeter of the whole town. The bonus is there is access to Kells Priory a mere 5 minutes walk from the house. It is sooooo cool to go around there and look at the ruins. There are two abandoned mills to look at too. There is a cool pub that makes pizza, called Shirley's. Kells is close to the medieval town of Kilkenny. You could drive to Wicklow, Waterford, Wexford, whatever from there. Closeby is Stoneyford which has a cheese shop and good take away Indian food. The owners of the property are right next door and are suuuper cool.

It is an easy 15 minute walk downtown, and if you don't want to walk the city bus (with helpful bus drivers) stops right outside. Katherine is as nice and helpful as can be; our room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. The breakfast room overlooks her lovely garden. I needed help calling the Garda office in Cahir to obtain a copy of a report we'd made about a stolen license plate, and she kindly called them for me. If I am lucky enough to return to Kilkenny I would certainly stay there again.

Upon meeting us, Val asked what we wanted to see and do in the area. My daughter wanted to see a live Hurling match. Val went to work and found two options. Unknown to Val though was that the match in Castlecomer and Freshford were both cancelled. Not a problem as we had a great trip regardless and met a nice gentleman named John McGrath at his pub on the square in Freshford. What a delightful town. We also made it to Castlecomer just as my father and sisters have on an off since the 1970s; taking a photo at the town sign. Castlecomer has nothing to do with my surname, however, it's tradition to take the photo so now Erin and I have one too. When we returned and Val found out about the cancellations she went back to work and the next moring she had found and confirmed with player's family's that a match would be happening in Hugginstown that morning. After a great breakfast with Tom leading us in traditional Irish song with his squeeze box (what a way to start the day). We made it to the pitch and saw a very exciting game in Hugginstown. I've tried to let Val know via email several times how much we enjoyed their hospitality, however, the email always seems to bounce back to us undeliverable. I hope that no-one has any trouble getting hold of them because you will be missing a memorable visit.

Try not to get room 1 on the 1st floors as it fronts the street and you may be bothered by the traffic and people walking up-and-down the sidewalk at night. Terrible experience with Celtic house. We had booked 2 double rooms for Sat night 3 weeks in…read moreadvance. When booking my credit card and phone number was taken. I got no email conformation so I called on the Thursday before we were due to arrive and was told all was ok with the rooms we booked. When we arrived to check in we were told that our credit card failed on the Friday (day before) and they gave our rooms to someone else, NOT sure why they wouldnt have checked this when we booked?. So we had traveled all the way to Kilkenny with my mother in law and had no where to stay... as it was the weekend of the All Ireland final all accommodation close to the City was booked. I suspect they got an offer of letting out the rooms for a longer period and decided it was worth bumping our one nights accommodation so they could make more money. Hope people find somewhere else to stay that has more ethical practices, so maybe they will also arrive to no room :(
