The cottage is a converted farmhouse, and it is 300 years old, but fully updated. With three bedrooms and three full bathrooms, everyone had plenty of room, and there was a nice living room, dining room, and eat-in kitchen. We cooked most of our own meals, and the kitchen was thoroughly furnished with everything we needed. The washer/dryer were also great, as the boys got very dirty running around in the muck (which they loved to do!) For the parents, the highlights were the lazy days, the peace and tranquility after a day of sightseeing, and the absence of wifi or cell phone service. While this might be a deterrent for some, we found it quite refreshing to unplug ourselves (and our kids) from all of the electronic gizmos. For the kids, the highlight was certainly the farm. Both boys got into the action, waking up by themselves every morning at 7am to help milk the cows, running around with the dog and the calves, then hurrying back from sightseeing to milk the cows again at 5pm. I had no idea that the kids would take such a liking to this, but they actually go up on their own at the crack of dawn to "do their chores" with the cows. The couple who manage the farm and the self-catering cottage, Brigid and Dan, were absolutely delightful hosts. They made themselves available whenever we needed anything, and they were happy to tell us stories of the area and give us tips for where to go, but they were by no means intrusive. They were wonderful with the kids, showing them how to help out with the chores on the farm and making the kids feel so special. This is truly a one-of-a-kind holiday experience that you won't soon forget. We can't wait to go back.

I have to admit that a little bit of the five stars I'm going to give Bridge View B&B is because I was somewhat of a rude guest, in that I arrived over an hour late after getting side tracked driving across Ireland then having my rental car locked in the parking deck across from Smithwick's Brewery (that one closes at 6PM - the 11PM one is up the street). Despite all of this, our hostess Eimear accommodated our tardiness and was very pleasant throughout the whole experience. That's reason enough to book this homey B&B, with the comfortable rooms and ideal location (along with metered parking nearby). The B&B sits right on the River Nore minutes away from a very convenient pedestrian bridge to downtown Kilkenny. The rooms are modest, with comfortable double beds and private bathrooms. The breakfast is delicious and made to order from the menu at the tables. Very much a mom and pop vibe, as Eimear made our breakfast (her husband is a musician we heard play at the Kyteler's Inn the night before - a small world indeed). The place is cash only, so be sure to have enough for your stay - if not, there are ATMs across the aforementioned pedestrian bridge. Overall, when I come back to Kilkenny I'm coming back to Bridge View B&B, and I promise this time not to be so late.

The rooms were clean and warm and the beds were really comfortable. Also, a private parking space for our car was a plus! We forgot our camera charger and they were nice enough to let us borrow one of theirs. I felt like I was staying at home when I stayed here!

A wonderful guesthouse in the County Carlow countryside…read more The host, Bobbie, is a wonderful lady who provides a fantastic service. The house is decorated very tastefully. I'm sure it has not changed very much over the years, but it's kept extremely well and with a lot of love, I'm sure. Our bedroom, the blue room, was beautiful, very comfortable and had two great views. The study and dining room both had welcoming fires in the evening. The dining room even had one in the morning while you enjoyed breakfast. The breakfasts were probably the best I've had in an Irish guesthouse. A huge array of tasty fruit, including fresh raspberries from the garden. Homemade bread, freshly squeezed orange juice and excellent coffee. A full Irish if you wanted it or a smaller selection of items from said full Irish. Bobbie ensured you were catered for. We opted for the five course meal in the evening on the day we arrived. It was wonderful. We shared the dining table with another couple, who were also celebrating their wedding anniversary. They were regulars of Lorum, that's how much they love Lorum Old Rectory. A testament to Bobbie and the service she provides. I look forward to returning to Lorum. And recommending it to anyone who will listen to me.
