The one my parents installed in their backyard in the 90s lasted three kids and over 20 years with regular maintenance. When it came time for us to look into a swingset for our daughters as tempted as I was by the kidcraft DIY ones at Costco, we ended up going with Rainbow simply because the kidcraft wooden playhouse in our backyard has been up for maybe three years and LOOKS it. We were a bit worried about how something we DIY might hold up so we figured we'd pay a bit more and go this route. First of all these things are expensive. There is no way around that. The website always says things are heavily discounted, like it never changes cost and is always on sale, so I think it's just the way they try to get you to pull the trigger - like OH it's not actually 7grand, it's ONLY 2 grand. I'd prefer they just be a bit more transparent on that, but I appreciate that it could be more. Once we were sold on the unit we wanted we decided to make the trek out to Olathe to see it in person and make sure we knew what we were doing. It was April, and honestly we were wanting to move quickly so we could have one installed early in the summer season. There is conflicting information on when they are open online - in some places it says they have hours on Sundays and on others it says they are closed. We couldn't figure out what the case was so we went there and they were closed to the public. The door was open and we thought oh, maybe we could just speak with a sales person but nobody was around so we just went home and ordered the one we wanted online. Now, their website is a bit dated but it worked okay. It was a little scary placing an order this big in this way, but we had no other time to get out to Olathe in the near future and decided it was worth it. Again, IRL would have been better because I would have asked about small add ons like a pirate telescope and baby swing, neither of which you can just add on via their website. At any rate, we made the purchase and a rep from their team was in contact with me by Monday morning which really impressed me! She told me the timeframe we'd be looking at and what to expect next. As the timeframe of 3-5 week delivery creeped into the three week mark I emailed asking about next steps and didn't hear back for several days. The following week I emailed again, and again no response so I called. Calling prompted an email and we got it scheduled and ultimately installed pretty quickly at that point. The installer was SO NICE and so fast. It was insanely impressive how they get these things up quickly. The main thing here is that these are impressive, well made, playsets. The folks working here are very kind, and thoughtful. Sometimes things just move slower than you might want, or you might have to reach out to get questions answered. Would I recommend Rainbow? For sure! Could they turn this into a 5 star experience with a few small tweaks? Absolutely. If you're not me though, learn from me, and go on a Saturday, talk to the sales people and I'm sure you'll have a smoother experience.

The staff member was nice who greeted us. And we were actually the only people on the inside of the nature center, so we got to enjoy it in a peaceful environment. There were some field trip kids having event events outside. My grandson enjoyed exploring, but I was disappointed to see that quite a few of the displays were out of order. Also, I had to tell staff that there was a mouse in bird nature viewing area. A child had left a cracker, and apparently a mouse had gotten in was taking advantage of it! But then I went into the newer section with the displays and another mouse ran out and was running around the room towards my grandson. So I think they need to correct this issue before it gets too out of hand. The trails are great and the natural gardens are as well. They have some great programs for the community. I just think that some of the displays need to be fixed and taking care of the pest problem, I'm sure if they let the hawk in there he would handle it! lol

This area is not the greatest for littler kids when the older ones are playing though, as balls are flying hard and fast. My youngest's favorite section is the slide that you have to ride a little cart down (roller slide). They have a type of bumper cars that require extra money to ride, but each time we have went, multiple bikes/cars were not working or stopped mid-turn. There are claw games and air hockey that costs extra as well. Each person, parents included, are not allowed to wear shoes inside, but need their branded socks. I do like this for the germ factor, but if you aren't prepared (I was wearing flip flops), the extra sock charge is there. For pricing, it is expensive. For a couple hours, it's a lot, but the benefit there is that they allow you to leave and come back that same day, so if you are making a day out of it, it makes more sense. For working parents, I couldn't get a wifi signal, but I did see a few adults with laptops, so I'm guessing they used their phones for signal. If noise bothers you, this place isn't for you...it's LOUD. I'm used to kids playing and having fun, but the walls seem to bounce the sound more than normal. When kids went in the light room and screamed, it echoed through the entire place. As far as food, there are only snacks. They have a few drinks and snack items to purchase, but if you are looking for a meal, you will have to leave and come back. The employees were nice, but the amount of times I saw a kid get hurt or do things like bring a bike to the top level and try riding it, there didn't have anyone watching to make sure kids were being safe. I was on edge the majority if the time watching kids (not mine) that were on the verge of getting hurt or go back to their parent in tears. To me, this place is good if you are in their with your kiss and plan on spending a long time there...or special occasions.

I'd advise taking care with fish- they use RO water, so drip acclimation will be necessary if you're on KC tap water. The Pygmy's cories I got from them were healthy, but they needed a slow acclimation to be put into my quarantine. They're now in the display. They're knowledgeable about their fish and plants (I'd assume salt water as well, but I don't have a saltwater tank, so I can't say one way or the other). The plants I've purchased from them have been great, except for one buce brownie tissue culture that melted and hasn't come back, but apparently my tank doesn't like buce, because I've tired multiple times, and buce melts and never come back, so I don't fault them for that. Their plants are nearly always in good shape and happy. I did buy some downoi that was super leggy, and so I trimmed it to use only the best of it. It's there, in the tank, and I'm watching to see what it does. But the tissue culture of the downoi I got from them really took off, and is propagating just fine. Their cost is in line with online sellers when you factor in shipping. I'll continue to use them. I've been pleased with the knowledge of the employees and their locality.

Our 4-year-old was asked not to come back after the fourth day for behaviors, but these were not egregious behaviors (I'm not saying this because I'm being a defensive parent). They had reportedly discussed behaviors earlier in the week but not with my wife and I and we weren't made aware of how serious they felt they were. We're clearly frustrated, and maybe this isn't the way it is with every class, but if you are going to have a summer camp, you need to have teachers that are trained to deal with behaviors of 4-year-olds and keep a close line of communication with the parents. There was no itinerary, no pictures of the camp, no way to engage with my child when they came home on what they learned. To top it off, the camp director was rude to my wife when explaining things. Extremely disappointed in the experience and if you have other options I would stay away.

But still a fun and cool concept. The YMCA of Olathe is unlike any other I've been to. We'll start with the positives. The employees here are really friendly and they let me right in without any real fanfare or hold up. I think it only took me 30 seconds to get past the front desk and that was that. They didn't ask for ID, I didn't have to show them my YMCA card, and they most certainly didn't make any phone calls. I really like that sort of trust. Most of the equipment here feels absolutely brand new, so even though some of the machines aren't my favourite (and seem like they're for kids), they all feel like they just bought them yesterday. It's a very clean shiny new facility, and everything is in perfect working order which is unusual for a YMCA. Now on to the negative stuff. There's not enough space in the workout room for all the stuff they have. They're missing a few important machines, but those that they do have are really bunched in together. At times I have to actually climb over different equipment to get to other equipment. There is no space. And they put the running track around the perimeter of the workout room. With no barrier whatsoever. So it's really not much of a running track although I don't run so it doesn't affect me personally. But whenever you step around the edges of the room you're actually walking into the running track. I can imagine there would be a bunch of collisions over the years if they keep it this way. Another negative is that their Cybex cable machine is a little bit too wide. And that they get busy and they don't have enough benches for everybody. If there are a bunch of people waiting for benches that's not a good thing. Not much space to use them in either. And they don't have big thick padded mats like they should have. There were some really friendly people as is the way in Kansas, but one guy actually marched over and took my stuff off my bench and said that he had been using it before me and had gone to talk to his wife. That's really bad gym etiquette on so many levels. Also the weights here are hexagonal rather than circular but I have discovered in my travels that it could be so much worse. The Wi-Fi works well when it works but then randomly stops working, which meant that I had to switch to my data. They don't have the bikes I really like but the ones they have here are pretty decent. Overall I would give them four stars. Now do you want to see the naked pix of me in the shower here? Yes? OK! Now? Olathe?
