Took a look at this place today as RDC likes playing his guitars and commuting does not make looking easy. The shop is pretty small but deep and also quite dark. Do guitars have to be kept in the dark? Is it a rock n roll rule or to stop damage like ancient documents? :) Well there were a LOT of guitars ranging from around £60 to a couple of grand or more (RDC would want the latter..has the latter?) They also have pedals and bridges and footpedals. Saw some keyboards..good for composing. Amplifiers, strings and some second hand stuff. They also do mail order. http://www.coda-music.com/catalog/index.php A specialist shop but well worth it if you are into guitars. read more

An excellent stock of high-end instruments. In particular Fender Custom Shop guitars and boutique builders/companies. That said the sales service or rather the lack of left me feeling unwelcome. I was in there for at least 30 minutes without any staff striking up any conversation. I realise it's a difficult balance between bothering someone and letting them browse. On my way out I mentioned to the the most senior looking member of staff that they have the best selection of Fender Custom Shop guitars that I've seen in the U.K. After a pregnant pause he looked up from the computer screen and said "thanks" and quickly resumed the screen. At which point I shrugged and left. I was one of 2 customers in the store that afternoon and there were at least 3 staff on so it was far from busy. Maybe the staff thought I was just another tyre kicker or a dreamer looking at guitars I can't afford.. Either of which I'm entitled to be. I was a little dishevelled after driving 3 hours out of my way to get there. Maybe Coda Music didn't see me as a possible customer.. or maybe I was seriously considering adding a PW MB to my 5 JE's, 1 GF and 1 DG . Who knows..? Not Coda Music that's for sure. The fact is if you want to sell guitars you need to engage with all customers in some way. read more

Was looking for a music shop in Stevenage, as I was there today, and lo and behold, there was Coda. My Google got me there; a bit tricky to find at first, but when I got there... It is like Aladdin's cave! I thought - 'small' at first, but no! it extends to the back, round to another room, and upstairs.. Lots of great guitars, amps etc etc Not so many bass guitars, which is why I don't give it all the stars. However, the guys in there are so helpful, and what they don't know, they find out for you.. read more

Went to Coda Music in Stevenage yesterday. Had the acoustic guitar in mind that I wanted. I told the assistant this was my first guitar. He couldn't have been more helpful. The guitar was taken out of the box and tuned-up for me before repacking it. As this was my first guitar he offered an assortment of plectrums and gave me a spare set of strings. Not cheapies I may add. Excellent service and great stock of guitars. Terry Avery. read more

This isn't my favourite place for music shops, because it's a bit small and well kinda cramped feeling. They have a pretty good range of guitars from the cheap and cheerful up to the ridiculously priced and the over the top pink with mother of pearl inlay etc. (do they ever sell these??). They don't do as many bass guitars, but that's true of most shops of this nature I think, and the range isn't bad, it's just a bit limited. Masses of pedals, and amps and so on as well here, though to be honest the place is so cramped that it's quite hard to see what there is in this respect. Not a bad shop if you know what you want, but not really one you'd go into to browse. read more

Visited today to try a second-hand PRS Modern Eagle listed as in excellent condition- I double checked this by email with specific questions about the finish, hardware ect. - there was apparently not a mark on it. After travelling 2.5 hours I found this not to be the case- there were around four small dings to the front of the body, scratches on the headstock, a big ding in the side of the guitar and around a 3mm chip out of the side of the top. On top of this, the pickup covers were deeply scratched and the finish of the guitar had faded to a yellowy natural from 'Blue Jean'. I felt quite angry about having my time wasted and when I pointed out that the finish was badly faded rather than excellent condition, the shop assistant said "they all do that". They don't. I've seen a number of Modern Eagles in blue jean finish from the same year or older and whilst, yes, they do fade, they go from a sanded back royal blue to more of a sky blue. This guitar was yellow and had either been stored in direct sunlight by the previous owner, sanded back to hide wear or had been cleaned with a product that had reacted badly to the nitro finish. Aside from my personal disappointment, i found the store to be cramped and they had guitars hung infront of each other in a way that they could swing and collide. When they had a gorgeous £5k Collings i35 Deluxe pushed up against the wall behind another rack it seemed disgusting. Most of these high end guitars shouldn't be left out all the time and definitely should not be on wall hangers. Would recommend World Guitars or Guitars4You as alternatives- they care about their products. read more

I am a jazz guitarist, and own several guitars purchased from Coda. They always do a reasonable deal and even though I now live in France I check their website and call in occassionally. The size of the store is irrelevant, size is'nt everything, its whats in it that matters. Large store, more overheads, up go the price of the products. I like Coda the way it is. read more
