Coco Bliss Superfood Bar is the newest addition to Bulimba's buzzing Oxford Street, and the latest venture from the good people who brought you Happy Little Dumplings; Melita and Candice. The concept is simple. Offer organic "fair trade coffee", fresh cold press juices, Protein shakes, smoothies and super-foods to the ever growing health conscious demographic.
By all accounts, the venture is off to a great start with staff being run of their feet, all day at their opening on Saturday (19/10/2013), having not slept the previous night! Up until at least the wee hours of Saturday morning, for last minute tweaks, and then reopening at 6:30am.
Despite some minor issues and equipment failure, it appears that "super-food" bar concept in a suburb such as Bulimba, is a marriage made in heaven.
Located next to Subway, Coco Bliss's large bi-fold doors offers a modern and clean aesthetic inside, with the sky blue counter and banana tree inspired wallpaper at the back giving the store a very tropical feel. High bar stools dominate opposite the counter, and with the bi-fold windows open, look out to a terraced herb patch garden.
Coco Bliss has on offer a daily range of salads, sandwiches and healthy sweet treats on top of their staples of Acai Bowls/Pink Pitaya Bowls, Muesli fruit salad bowls, Protein Shakes, Smoothies/Frappes, and Pressed Juices, as well as coffee. The menu and step by step instructions behind the counter offer what choices you have and what you can order.
I decided to try their coffee, (supplied by Elixir coffee), a regular long black (12oz - $4), and also went with their regular sized Protein Shake ($6.50). First step is to choose your liquid; Coconut Water, Almond Milk, or Soy Milk. Check! Second Step is to choose your "function"; "Gains" or "Shred". I had to smile a little as I hadn't really thought about it this far. Seeing as its coming up to summer, and I have just started doing some weights (key word here is "some"), and I've always been a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger I went with "gains". Besides, a slim kid like me could use some. Final Step is to choose your flavour. There's Dark Chocolate, Choc Peanut Butter, Banana Berry, Coconut Mango, Strawberry and Macho. I go with the Banana Berry, a simple concoction of "mixed berries" and good 'ol banana. I decided against "add-ins" for $1each, such as L-Cartanine, L-Glutamine, but I figured I'd have enough "gains" to be made.
Service was friendly, despite their obvious fatigue, and I didn't have to wait long. The long back coffee was a mild in flavour (i usually like mine strong), but at least it did not have a bitter taste. Bitterness is a big no-no for me. The protein shake was delicious, and quite a large size (despite it being a regular), and I inhaled it like a vacuum cleaner. I could feel my mass gains already, so Mr Schwarzenegger better watch out!
Coco Bliss Super-food bar is a great addition to Oxford Street, and looks to cater to the many healthy (and wannabes like me) people of Bulimba and beyond. Bliss indeed. read more
