I have to begin with a caveat -- this place isn't really my thing. A 'garden' full of scale models of houses and scenes just doesn't interest me.
The garden covers two large sections -- one section with scenes from the UK and a second international section. I assume the people who created this place are from the UK. I lived in the UK for five years and despite many of these models touching close to where I lived and inspiring a slight bit of nostalgia, I just don't see the appeal.
The international section is much the same, but features landmarks from selected countries. This is the moderately appreciable part of this attraction -- international relations. Canberra, being the capital of a major country, is of course home to many diplomatic missions. The displays in the international section are largely funded by, and in some cases even produced by, the embassies or expat associations of those various countries. So it is interesting that this little roadside attraction managed to attract a number of diplomatic missions to support it. Thus, reading into it a bit, Cockington Gardens really is itself a symbol of diplomacy as a host for displays of culture and soft power. Cool.
The models throughout are bit run down, too. The Australian sun has understandably taken a bit of a toll. But, each of the little mechanical bits integrated into some of the attractions still work, so it's clearly well cared for, if in need of some fresh paint.
And as for the "garden" aspect. There's some interesting miniature versions of trees, but otherwise it doesn't impress me with a diversity of flora that I would expect from something calling itself a garden. It's miniature houses with some greenery and low-maintenance flowers in between scenes. That's not what I've come to expect from a garden.
So, not my thing, but can be appreciated by many. And for that, three stars. read more
