Do you need some leatherwork done? Do you need a watch repaired? Do you want to listen to two men scream at each other in Russian for 20 minutes? Cobbler & Things will most likely be able to take care of these things for you. My mother thinks I am very, very fat (and is not shy about telling me). Sometimes she prefers to show rather than tell, so of course she bought me a belt in Italy that needed about 10 inches taken off of it before I could actually wear the thing. After he finished bellowing at (and being bellowed at by) his bookkeeper of many years, Michael fixed me up just fine, for a fair price. He's obviously an intelligent man (he speaks five languages), and from my limited experience, I would say he's efficient and skilled. Just as important, he's honest: he was very upfront about the fact that he wouldn't be able to fix my wife's purse to her satisfaction, and thoughtfully recommended a nearby shop that could handle the task. I appreciate that. We should all be so honest about our own limitations. And since we're being honest, I have none. That film Limitless was based on my life. I had to get a 10 year old pair of Prada wedge sandals repaired. Michael was great as he did the work right in front of me. He took the shoes apart and adjusted the leather straps so that I have a tighter fit around my ankles. Michael also pointed out that the shoes are reaching its end life (thanks to the Florida weather) but I'll be able to have a couple more years to enjoy them! Excellent quick service! I needed a pair of my roller skates repaired.. (the entire tongue of the boot ripped off) and he on the spot quickly and beautifully repaired my skate boot. The place looks a bit sketchy and you might walk past it if you're trying to find the cobbler. You need to be buzzed inside and there is bulletproof windows that separate you and the owner. The owner is very personable and nice. He asked me what work needed to be done and after showing him the broken zipper on my boots, he took a look at the other boot and convinced me that it didn't require a zipper replacement in order to save me money (+1). Shoes weren't ready on the quoted day I picked up the shoes. He quoted morning of Day 3 (Day 1=drop off day, just for the sake of this review) but noted that it'll probably be ready Day 2, to go ahead and check Day 2. I came in Day 3 and they weren't ready. Came in again on Day 5 to pick up the shoes. I noticed that he doesn't remember the shoe orders. You receive a receipt when you drop off shoes; however, when you come to pick up, he'll ask you what you're picking up and what needed to be done (happened to another guy that was there as well). When I identified my boots, he said.. "do you have your receipt? How much did I say it will be?" "$30" (1 zipper replacement= $25) "Oh so I guess I'll need to add taps and shoe shine". Hrm.. so only the zipper was ready by Day 5 and I still had to wait for him to finish? (Not to mention, he didn't remember what work needed to be done on the shoes?) The only good thing about this was that it only took 5 additional mins to complete. The actual work was satisfactory... prices were reasonable. And the owner was very nice and you can tell he definitely understands the craft well and likes what he does. However, the misquoted time estimate (would expect a phone call or something if the original timeline wasn't going to be met - to save myself a trip) and not knowing what work needed to be completed made the experience rather lacking. read more

Michael is the Absolute Best. Great at his work, friendly, professional and COOL. I had a broken buckle on one of my riding boots. He went over the best options with me to get it fixed, so that they'd look the same on each boot AND be wearable. He said I'm going to buy some buckles today and ill see if I can find a pair like that, but if I cant ill have to sew the straps. Ok....either way I was fine with. Soooooo I picked up my boots the next day and they looked Brand Spanking new! A friendly , quirky man who patiently spent time replacing a broken silver chain on a vintage necklace. I subsequently brought a pair of shoes to repair. He works quickly, seems to charge reasonable prices(cash only). The shop is closed on weekends . The shop is on a sketchy block , with customers popping in with gold rings or sterling flatware to pawn or sell. So if that bothers you, you might feel uncomfortable there. I came after reading a Yelp review, and.being fed up with my local DeKalb Ave repair shop, that was overpriced for little (or any) jobs. read more

Reading the other reviews really makes me wish I had kinder things to say about my experience here. The kind reviews are actually what made me decide to take some time during my lunch break to come into this little shop a few hours ago. I took my engagement ring here hoping to get it re-sized (taken down). Michael took one look at my ring, slammed it down on the counter, and said "Eat more!" I laughed it off, though it was so rude that the other people in the shop reacted and came to my defense, saying that he shouldn't talk to me that way. But he didn't let up. He went on and on about how he likes his women "bigger". It took me a minute to realize that he was stating his displeasure at my body (and ring) size. I said, "That's nice, but this is my engagement ring so it's really not about what you like. Can you re-size it?" Then I had to listen to him talk about how I'll get fat and pregnant and the ring won't fit anymore as I get more embarrassed and impatient by the second. After being spoken down to and having my ring repeatedly picked up and slammed down, he yelled that he could put a ring guard on it, but he only had gold. He asked if I cared. My ring is silver. Of course I care. Thanks for nothing, buddy. Waste of my time. If you want to be treated with common courtesy and have your things handled with care, don't go here. If you just want to have keys made and don't mind being yelled at by a little Russian man and listening to loud conversation while being ignored or spoken down to, I don't see why not. read more

It's a tiny shop run by a big character. And by tiny, I mean that you could easily miss it if you weren't looking for it. Michael is a great storyteller and he has a ton of stories to tell. It's unfortunate to hear of another reviewer's poor experience at this cobbler/jewelry repair/pawn shop, especially given that her experience seems to have been motivated by gender issues (i.e., the proprietor clearly has some machismo going on, and she just wanted her ring resized). That's unacceptable, so that leads me to give Bond Street Jewelry & Shoe Repair four stars; otherwise, I might have given the place five. I had three pairs of shoes magically transformed, and this happened in less than 24 hours (the proprietor in fact said he could have my shoes repaired by the end of the day). He also quickly replaced my broken watch band when I went back to collect my shoes, and all of this for less that $60. We had an interesting conversation about communication (since I teach communication at a university), and this is perhaps also where his poor customer-service skills were revealed. He runs a business, confronts all sorts of people (often not wanting shoes repaired, but wanting to sell something for a bit of money, etc.), he mentioned being held up at gunpoint (thus the need for the bullet-proof glass in the place), so he's got something of a confrontational attitude. But the work he does is fast, well done, and very well priced. read more
