What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

The private estate is massive at 25,000 acres (100 square km) with two dozen farms, livestock enterprises and managed forests, so it really is the beating heart of the local area. It's a truly unspoilt part of the country here and was the perfect location for a summertime wedding (hence our visit). The reception was held within the Lady Elizabeth Wing in a former pottery building near the hall. http://www.holkham.co.uk/weddings-venue/the-lady-elizabeth-wing/introduction With a large, enclosed lawn out front and contemporary event space inside, it made for a terrific venue for 150 guests (it can accommodate up to 400). The organisers were like a well-oiled machine, as everything ran like clockwork (my fellow ushers and I helped with the set up the morning of the wedding). It's a gorgeous part of Norfolk amidst the sprawling grounds of the country house - if you get the chance to visit here you're in for a treat. Designated walks allow you to explore the 3,000-acre grounds (be sure to look out for the herds of deer).

The food is top notch and there is great choice. Going on a sunny day is great as there are plenty of places to sit outside. The Hall also has it's own Wine Shop (supported by Adnams) which is actually quite large but to be honest we found it rather expensive.

Our group stopped…read moreat Waterside in search of fulfilling our naughty craving for freshly fried fish and chips. We all got the special fried cod with mashed peas, fresh buttered bread and chips. The freshly fried cod is gigantic! If you get the whole meal you will not be able to finish it. They give you a generous portion of buttered bread for 70p and a nice portion of mashed peas for 60p. The cod comes with a nice portion of chips. The cod was very fresh. Batter had a very nice taste to it and it was fried until crispy, just perfect if you ask me. The mashed peas were fresh peas, then mashed, you can tell by their taste they did not come out of a can. I ended up stealing my husband's peas because they were that yummy. They have a nice selection of beers on tap. Enjoyed my second fish and chips experience and look forward to going back in the future. This place is also doggie friendly, you will find many owners on doggie dates with their dogs on leads.

Shocking. The food…read morehere is mediocre at best, the chips are dry and the peas are long since past their best. On the plus side the steak is acceptable and the portion sizes are good, however aside from the grotty interior of the building that looks like it needs a visit from Kim & Aggie, The biggest thing that lets this place down is its appalling customer service. If you have to send something back because it's terrible (pro tip: don't order the Steak & Ale pie!) then you'll be greeted with "well you ordered it mate..." To which the waiter lets out a huff and grabs the plates and walks off. Coming back a minute later with the ever polite "what would you like instead?" You give your order and off he goes. He comes back with the replacement food and dumps it on your table, ignoring you when you say thank you, and leaving you to get up and get a new set of knives and forks because he took the others and didn't replace them. If that wasn't enough to put you off, the entire time while we were eating our meal, the waiter devoid of any Customer service skills then proceeds to have a very loud conversation with his colleagues where the entire restaurant can hear, and that is extremely off putting when you're trying to eat, hearing the waiter joke to his friends "I bet I'm not going to get a tip out of them!!" Well you make your own minds up on this place, but rest assured I have made my mind up: I shall not visit again. Grotty, mediocre food, and the worst customer service I have ever come across.
