We purchased a home based, in large part, on the "professional" looking report we received from Coastal Home Inspections. This report stated the home was "sound with no major issues". We lived out of state so depended a great deal on the accuracy of their report findings. When we did come to our new home 9 months later we decided to do some remodeling. The contractor who came to our home noted the kitchen floor had a very obvious drop at the cabinet baseboards. An 1 1/2 inch drop! The contractor went under the home and found major support joists had been cut to allow new plumbing to a bathroom. When we wrote a letter to Coastal Home Inspections asking them why this was not included in their disclosures they stated basically "it is only an inspection report". They tried to say they did not have access to some of the areas in question, however, the area in question was only 10' from the crawlspace entry and easily found by the contractor. Obviously, we now have a major expense to repair the support beams which should have been noted by the inspection report by Coastal Home Inspections. After writing an extensive letter asking them to at least carry a part of the cost for this repair, they stated they would not do anything financially to help us and if we wanted to start legal action to remember on the contract we signed we would be responsible for all the costs as well. Bottom line, it's a total waste of time and money to hire Coastal Home Inspections when you are looking for peace of mind in the purchase of your home! read more
