No shops to really speak of were located at the marina-- we needed to go into town-- and the couple stores that were there (and open) were a marina goods store and a food + beverage restaurant. The three taxis we did find at the marina were two vans already booked for a large party and one taxi that refused our services so he could accept the request of a man that interrupted us and threw a fit for the taxi. We walked all over the town square, begging a taxi service for a ride and offered to pay double or to pay for the entire day, and we were refused. We finally went back to the marina, and the two vans from hours earlier were still there-- after waiting for a party that never showed. We offered to pay the driver for a day's service since their party never showed up. One of the van drivers recognized us from two hours before when we'd asked him if he could take us but had to decline for the party. So he called his boss to report the time they'd been waiting for the no-show party, and he accepted our offer for a private drive and tour for the next several hours. This incredible man is Vernon with PR Taxis. Born and raised for 52 years in Wales. Vernon took us ALL OVER Wales, showing us areas frequented by tourists but taking us to places no bus or coach would dare attempt. We saw sights so magnificent it took my breath away. We enjoyed the picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and mountain faces, Ogwen trail and Snowdonia National Park, streams and waterfalls and lakes, "The Lonely Tree," countless sheep, castle ruins, ancient cemeteries (though we did not stop to walk them), the world's first suspension bridge (Menai) and Britannia bridge, Caernarfon Castle, and a replica of the Tyn-y-Coed horse carriage that traveled the 250 miles or so from Holyhead to London many centuries ago. Out of all the days and excursions we've had during this trip-- heck, out of ALL the trips and adventures we've had, ever!-- no others even come close to the wonderful time and experiences we shared with Vernon today. When we visit Wales again-- because we will be back to visit-- we most certainly will contact Vernon to drive for us. It was an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to doing it again. Diolch!
