There's something nice about The Co-op. I'm not sure if it's just clever marketing, but whenever I step foot into a Co-op supermarket or bank I don't immediately feel like a cog in some diabolical corporate machine. However, usually when stepping into a chain supermarket I don't get the feeling I have when stepping into an independent cornershop, where the owner knows the locals and is part of the community. I've had a few corner shops like that in other places I've lived, and it's nice.
But the Whalley Range Co-op has that vibe. I've lived in the area for a year now, and I know the faces of all of the staff, and have gotten to know some of them pretty well. They've seen me through bad hangovers and baking dilemmas. They've bleeped through a disgusting volume of prawn cocktail crisps without sneering, and for this I thank them.
As a corner shop it has all you need: plenty of fresh fruit and veg, all your usual cupboard fillers and a good array of household sundries. They also stock some nice olives and a good selection of cheese (two kinds of brie? Impressed.), plus freshly baked breads and pastries.
There is also a FREE cash machine, inside the shop, which is a welcome addition to Withington Road which can get a bit shady in the dark. And finally, they have an Amazon droppy-offy-collection-boxy-thingy. I've not used it yet, but it looks like jolly good fun. read more
