Of all the leisure clubs in Disco Bay my favorite by far is the Discovery Bay Marina Club…read more Contributing to that decision may be the fact that I lived on a boat for eight years at the club getting up to nothing but glorious mischief and fun. When I was growing up here there were things that I looked forward to, summer, Sunday, and after school - I suppose like most kids. Throughout the summer my friends and I would run around the club's facilities like a pack of wild dogs. The staff were always friendly and never shouted at us, which is a bit strange, while we played in their playground behind the pool, watched TV in the lobby, or had a go at tennis. Sunday's were spent either in their pool, running through an obstacle course that could rival American Ninja's, or having their brunch buffet on the 1st floor restaurant. I remember their pancakes and syrup like it was yesterday. I was only allowed to go once a month to the buffet though. After school my friends and I would meet up, somewhere along the docks, and head to our 'base' located behind the bicycle park. As we grew older the activities we did during our free time changed. A friend's parent had a speed boat so knee boarding, water skiing, and barbecues on nearby islands became a norm. It was a life style none of my city friends could boast about. During those summers, those Sunday's we were kings of the world, nothing could stop us (apart from our parents, Mondays and school starting again). I look at those days as some of the best in my childhood and have constantly thought about returning to a house boat - then I remember all the leaks, the typhoons, and being grown up, and I'm sent swiftly back to reality. I often return to the Marina club, say hi to the staff there again, enjoy your facilities and remember with fondness the times I had here.

We did not need a fast pass (we went during a slow period), though we did do early entry (which cost extra) but probably could have accomplished everything without it. I am a former Disneyland pass holder and have been to the parks in Florida a few times. In comparison, HK Disneyland is very easy to get to since they have an MTR station that stops right at the park. We stayed at the Explorer's Lodge and were able to use the free shuttle bus to the park. With early entry, we were able to do the Frozen Ever After, Wandering Oaken's Sliding Sleds and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride all before the park opening. My daughter wanted to do a character meet and greet, which we queued up for as soon as we got into the park. The Disney parks in Asia have a set of characters unique to these parks and the character meet and greet waits can go up to 2 hours, so this was a bonus. We made sure to ride Mystic Manor, Frozen Ever After and the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway MineCars twice since we don't have these in Anaheim. Food was a mixed bag. Some places were closed so we ate at the Explorer's Club, which had a semi-buffet. Food was ok but it was nice to have a sit-down lunch. The snacks were better - like the Lotso waffle sandwich, Korean grilled squid and the HK-Style Flavored Tea Slush with soft serve. We even caught a couple of shows - Festival of the Lion King and Mickey and the Wondrous Book. They are both good, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Mickey and the Wondrous Book. If you are a family with small kids, this is probably the easiest of the Disney parks to visit!

I came on a Saturday and was very pleasantly surprised by the wait times. The longest lines were…read moreonly 30 minutes, the average wait time was only 15 minutes. It's a much smaller park than the California Disneyland that I grew up with, but that was really nice as well; nothing felt rushed. We arrived at opening and by 2:30 had gone on just about every ride. They had a lot of character interactions and many shows around the park. It's not as expensive as US Disney parks either - that's a huge perk!

Discovery Bay - Mui Wo hiking trail

Discovery Bay - Mui Wo hiking trail

This trail is one that is quite important to me. While I was growing up in Discovery Bay my family…read moremade a tradition of hiking to Mui Wo, or at least the Trappist Monastery every Boxing Day. During that time of the year the weather is ideal for hiking but it sucked because it was the day after opening all my cool presents... like a Playstation. That being said I'm really glad I spent those days outdoors rather than stuck behind a screen i.e. nowadays when working! The hike starts from Nim Shu Wan beach near the Discovery Bay Marina Club. You need to walk though a small village before actually beginning the up hill part. For some reason or another I always think the hike is only 40 minutes. It's double that, at least, so be prepared with trainers and water! After the village there's an upward walk, that seems like it never stops, all the way to the top of the mountain between the two communities. Somewhere in the middle lies a small monastery that used to bring in Dutch cows, a patriotic Dutchie told me, don't ask me why they brought them in from Holland. Anyway, the monastery is a nice place for a break, a sandwich, or just a small visit to catch one's breath. From the monastery to the top is tough. Mainly because it's a steep incline but also the fact that you can never actually see further than fifty meters because of the turns and bushes it keeps you guessing "Am I there yet? Evidently not!" But once you get to the top there's a welcoming pagoda that offers views of Mui Wo to one side and rolling hills to the other, it's really something. The rest of the way is downhill, great you'd think. Nope. After walking for so long uphill my muscles find the change to walking down extremely difficult. If I had to chose between them I'd pick downhill, for sure, just not when my legs feel like jelly. Another thirty minutes later of walking and you should be bang in the middle of Mui Wo. 7 11 for a quick top up on water then to one of the restaurants for a pizza. And that's how it's done.

Discovery Bay Rock Pools

A lot of you readers out there probably already have your minds made up about Discovery Bay. DB,…read moreDogs and Babies. Living in the small community for over twenty years I can say with some certainty that you are bang on the money. Babies crying and dogs barking everywhere! However, a small hike from the ferry pier, or bus terminal, you can rid yourself of those sounds. Somewhat. I visit the rock pools frequently during the hot months of Hong Kong's dominating season, summer, and I am constantly awed by its beauty. Except on a Sunday or public holiday - on those days I'm awed for a split second, the awe is then shattered by the shrill, high-pitched cry of a very small, very young human being. After a fifteen-minute walk up the road towards the golf club there is a small trail that leads into a valley of rocks and cascading water. From here you have you choice of about three to four pools. The easiest one to get to is directly below the trail and by far one of the most fun. However, being the easiest and most fun means it is generally more populated than the others. On a good day I'll find it empty and manage a few cannonball jumps from the ten-foot cliff above the pool before relaxing in its refreshing waters. Further up the valley is a larger pool, I call it the family pool, you can guess why. There's a shallow swimming area, a deeper part and two waterfalls to jump from. You may spot a few beer cans and plastic bottles wedged between the rocks but I've been told they scare away the snakes. Just kidding! I've only ever seen one snake in those parts and it was a baby. There is another hundred meters of the valley to comb over for those adventurous types with some isolated pools, too far for those young humans to crawl to. Bring a cold drink, some mosquito repellant then lie back and enjoy the day.

The Discovery Bay Residents Club has been around for as long as I can remember living in the…read morecommunity for (more than 25 years!), and has provided a spot of leisure for the residents. Located only a 5 minute walk from the ferry pier it is also open to non-members, for a fee. I can imagine that when it first opened people were in awe of its facilities, grandeur and what not but after the years little to nothing as changed. The restaurant's menu is more or less the same, the gym is still small, and the pool and tennis courts haven't moved. Granted, the interior and presentation has improved, the facilities touched up and grown a little but it somehow manages to remain stuck in its early years, the glory days maybe. The DBRC's bigger brother, Club Sienna, is a prime example of what a residents club should look like. However, that being said the DBRC is still a place that is close to my heart and whenever I return to Disco Bay I'll find myself wandering through it's sliding doors. I'll play ping pong on a Saturday morning, tennis on a sunday evening and finish off with some fish and chips in their Tai Pak bar. There's much to do in the club, as well as places to do nothing, like the reading room. The staff are very friendly - maybe because they've seen my ugly mug 100s of times! - and informative. There have been many a complaint against the place but in all honesty, what can you expect when trying to accommodate 15,000 spoilt (mostly) people? At the end of the day I judge a clubhouse by how easy it makes a Sunday. The DBRC, with it's basic facilities and restaurant make my Sundays easy to handle and knowing that not much has changed over the years really helps me to feel at home.
