After inquiring, in a tone dripping with condescension, whether she could "help [me] with anything," she followed my polite explanation--that I wished to evaluate the club and its offerings more thoroughly before committing--with the curt remark: "If you come back, you better bring your checkbook." As a representative of the club's leadership, this interaction conveyed not only a lack of basic courtesy but a fundamental misunderstanding of how to engage prospective members. A club's leadership sets the tone; in this case, it fell well short of the hospitality and respect one would expect.
