I booked on Priceline, got the largest room available, they called it Apt 1. Went into the room and it smelled of mold and mildew. Property full of drinking farm workers. Couldn't breathe so I checked out and went down road to Hilton. Priceline and hotel would not refund the money, shame on you Priceline, long time till I consider using your service. read more

The town of Clewiston is located on the southwest bank of Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in Florida. It was named for Tampa banker A.C. Clewis, who financed the extension of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad through the area in 1922. In 1932 Clewiston was incorporated and laid out according to the plans of the Southern Sugar Corp who wanted a showcase city to serve as its headquarters. The town has the nickname "America's Sweetest Town" because of the U.S. Sugar Corporation headquarters here. The Clewiston Inn is the oldest hotel near Lake Okeechobee. The Inn was first built in 1926 by architects L. Phillips and Edgar S. Wortman in a two story Classical Revival style along the waterfront of Lake Okeechobee. The hotel was constructed by the Clewiston Company, the community and real estate development arm of Bror Dahlberg's Southern Sugar Company. Southern Sugar went into bankruptcy during the Great Depression and sold their assets to United States Sugar Corporation which was founded by three former General Motors executives. The hotel survived the 1926 Hurricane and the 1928 hurricane that killed over 4,000 people when Lake Okeechobee flooded causing many people to drown. The hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1937 but rebuilt in 1938 by U.S. Sugar Corp. with thick concrete walls braced with extra thick steel reinforcing rods the could withstand any future hurricanes. U.S. Sugar Corp used the inn to house company executives, customers. and visiting dignitaries. President Herbert Hoover stayed at the inn when he dedicated the Hoover Dike built around the lake, to provide flood control after the devastation of the Hurricane of 1928. One of the most stunning features of the hotel is the the Everglades Lounge and Bar which has a 360-degree wildlife mural covering all four walls of bar. The mural was made in 1945 by artist J. Clinton Shepherd who recreated the animals and plants of the Everglades. He stayed at the Inn for many months and made daily trips into the Everglades to sketch the flora and fauna. The historic mural alone makes this a 5 star visit. I love a good ghost story and the Clewiston Inn has it's share. There have been a number of paranormal investigations here and it's believed there are four spirits who never checked out. They include Anita Conklin who lived at the Clewiston Inn in room 225 and died in 1994. People have reported having their hair pulled outside the room. Other guests mention room 118 where there have been reports of a woman in the window. In 2007 the U.S. Sugar Corporation sold the Inn to Big Lake Hotels. In 2011 the Big Lake Hotels Corporation sold the Inn to Clewiston Hospitality LLC. It is an Americas Best Value Inn. On February 21, 1991, the hotel was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The five stars is for the historic value of the hotel as I have never stayed or eaten here. The manager caught me peeking in the window and even though the inn was closed he graciously allowed me inside to look around. I got a brief glimpse of the famed Everglades room and even though the light wasn't on I was suitably awed. Returning for a drink at the bar is now high on my list of post corona activities. read more

If I could give it zero stars I would. If you have any family, go stay with them. Everything about this place was horrible. God bless the owners whom are most likely trying to make a living, but with that comes them not serving their customers well. The rooms were TINY and the walls were thin. You can barely turn around in the bathroom. The bead were uncomfortable and I literally felt uncomfortable laying in the bed. The worst sleep of my life. They had the nerve to charge over $100/a night for that place. We were in town for a funeral and options were limited on such short notice -- we would've for SURE checked out. I asked the attendant if we could check out just a few minutes after checkout so that we could get dressed and then head to the funeral. We didn't want to get there so early. The lady said to stay an extra hour I would've had to pay for a full night! Can you believe that?! It's not like they had customers just overflowing. Not by any means. Don't stay here. The walls are dirty, the floors are dirty, the everything is dirty. I will never stay here again, and that's just the bottom line. I WISH I took pictures of the filth. read more

I wish I could give this inn ZERO stars. STAY AWAY! I walked in to reserve a room and told them I would need a first floor room since they did not have an elevator. My "first floor" room was up 4 steps. When we previewed the room it had paint all over the floor and was very dirty. The bathroom tile had been painted and they didn't even bother to remove the shower curtain as there was paint all over it as well. When I asked for a refund they refused. Don't even think of going here without stopping in to see the bar room! Others have gone here for the food, which is a mistake. The reason to stop here is to be in contact with a touch of history and the bar room which contains one of the finest mural paintings ever (see my pictures). I can't even imagine the effort and talent that went into the wall mural's creation which is absolutely "Old Florida" and exquisite. Food wise, forget it, and if you have no interest in Old Florida or works of art, keep on driving since the Clewiston Inn has little else to offer. Now, how to rate it? That's a really tough question. It does have a 5 star piece of art, but essentially only one piece of art. Though I feel it is certainly worth a stop to see, that is about it. For food, not only have I had better, it is a sort of a rather not two star at best and when it comes to accommodations, I don't know since I haven't stayed there. Since the place is classified under the heading, not of local flavor, but as a hotel and a restaurant, the best I can go is two. If as local flavor which would include art, it would be an easy four; so I suppose a 3 balances it all out. read more

I cannot even give this a rating. the one star is only because I cannot post without one. This hotel was an icon of the past. But it is no more. The inn keepers could care less about it. I was going to stay because of the haunted history. Been there before years back for breakfast and it was amazing. the way everything still had that old time feel. Tonight, we were going to stay, and were set up to stay in the room close to one of the ones that was reported to be haunted. Was very disappointed in seeing how bad the lobby was. The area where we had breakfast years before, was empty and closed off. The old switchboard, was now in the lobby and not in the operator room. We got the the room and the AC's didn't work. Changed rooms and they handed us a key for a padlock that was keeping the room closed. I cleaned the filters in the little robot looking AC that was in there and just did not feel safe with the whole situation. I took out my dousing rods and asked the spirits a series of questions and ultimately decided to go with what they recommended. We left. We were told it was policy not to refund anything. I really hope that they get new owners who care about the history of the inn. I would really like to go back, but only if this happens. I feel sorry that they are on the National Registry of Historic Places and that the owners are not keeping historic. read more

The Clewiston Inn reflects the fading glory of the town and one-time power of Big Sugar in Florida. I've been here a number of times on business, and while I try to support local businesses, it is hard not to visit the chain hotels on the edge of town. The latest owners have slapped a new layer of paint on, and done wonders with renovation, but you can't hide the age of the facility. It may have the "plantation house" historic look, but it is still slowly falling apart, just like the fortunes of this town. The rooms are small, but enough to satisfy a single traveler. Their showers are leaky and moldy, the fixtures are ancient, and the wifi is laggy and limited in bandwidth. Thankfully, the air conditioning usually works. Usually. If it does not, staff will do their begrudging best to find you a new room with a functioning unit. Go into the bar and admire the mural. Try and experience the ghosts that allegedly haunt the facility. Look at the exhibits in the foyer showing better days when Big Sugar was still a power in town. Maybe avoid the restaurant? At one time it was a significant attraction, but like the rest of town, it is now struggling to remain open. Most of the staff means well and can be very friendly, pointing out their favorite fishing hole or telling stories about "Old Clewiston". Some of them are frazzled by long days and limited opportunities, and may share that frustration with you. If you're here to fish or hunt or bike the lake, you might save a few bucks staying at this place, and you might even get what you paid for. read more

This hotel has old charm. Feels as if you walk through a time warp as soon as you enter the front doors. The pros and cons of the hotel is listed below: PROS - quiet at night - charming - direct tv with most if not all channels - Internet was fast and free - room was clean however a few things that can be updated to make it cleaner. I'll list below CONS: - little to no eateries in town. The ones that are available nothing special. - sheets were clean stains were present. The linens were old. - Bed was average comfort. - small room and bathroom. - musty smell in the closet. I didn't use for close because I didn't want to smell like an old house. Overall I'd give this place 3 stars for its charm along with the great cable tv and updated flat screen tv in the room and to include the free internet. Don't expect to come here to use the bar anytime during your stay. It's only open during certain times during the day. For the area I'd say it's probably the best place to stay. I didn't see anything in the area better. I'm not saying you shouldn't stay here just don't expect a 3 to 4 star hotel experience. It's more like a 2 star at best. read more

60 miles west of West Palm Beach and 60 miles east of Ft. Myers is America's Sweetest town Clewiston. Clewiston Inn was built in 1938 and it is definitely worth the stop along highway US27 if you are looking for country elegance. The hotel lobby is unique and historic and so is the gorgeous mural in the bar. It is the oldest hotel in the lake Okeechobee area and has been placed on the national register of historic places by the United States Department of the Interior. The staff is friendly, but unprofessionally dressed in inappropriate outfits. That was a big contrast to this unique, historic place. The standard rooms are very small. The sink is in the corner separated from the super small shower/toilet area. The paint on the bathtub was peeling and the water pressure in the shower was very low. The comforter smelled bad and it was not washed in a loooong time. I removed it right away and placed it in the hallway. The remote control was dusty and did not work. I went to sleep hoping that the breakfast will be decent. Well, it was far from that. I could not find anything edible. The cereals were full of ants and the waffle maker was very, very dirty. The orange juice tasted awful. I doubt there is even 10% of orange juice in there. In summary 5 stars for the historic value of the inn, 1 star for the accommodations and breakfast so my final score is 3 stars. read more

I was here with a bus full of people that just stopped for lunch. I wish I'd known where we were going so I could read the reviews first...because it sounds like the best part of the Clewiston Inn is the part I missed. Instead of beautiful art in the barroom, I got to see the pretty neat architecture in the front hall, and the less-than-appetizing buffet. We did have service, which I appreciated, its just I wouldn't plan to go back based on the dinner. That makes me sad really, because in its day, it was probably stellar. True. The service was awful. The staff was too busy putting the linen table cloths away in an empty dining room. Only the workers came in for the salad bar. The food was good when we got it. The bar room is all murals and just beautiful. That alone is worth the trip. I do feel for the owners. They must be losing a bundle, and the staff could care less. This hotel deserves a zero, but I can't do that. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. I think they never clean the carpet or the floors. Water from the shower got on the floor. I used some hand towels to dry it and oh boy, it came up black. It was nasty and disgusting. There was mold on the doors and in the closet, the curtains in the room are torn, there was stain on the towels, broken parts in the toilet, rust everywhere. It looks like an abandon room. Look at the pictures I took. They speak by themselves. They charge $100.00 and it is a hotel worth about $25.00. It's much worst than a cheap motel. I was going to just leave, but it was late, and I was really tired. Also, breakfast is a joke. There was a bad smell (like an open sewer) in the bathroom that gets into the room. The hot water handle came apart and off, hot water problems, trash on breakfast room, not replenish the breakfast, lady came, took a look and left, did not bring anything else, parking on the street, parking of a park, noisy street. Had lunch at the Clewiston Inn (Colonial Dining Room) during the week with spouse - after some trepidation following the TA.com and Yelp reviews. Very pretty looking inn and deserving of its historical designation. Inside is classy and it looks well kept up. The dining room had two other tables occupied with groups of 4-5 and a separate room with a Lion's Club meeting. We choose the buffet lunch at $10.95 with choices of fried chicken, pork and macaroni with chicken casserole. . Also came with mashed potatoes, rice, mixed veggies, corn, peas and a decent salad bar. The service was very good - friendly and fast. The food was good for a buffet and the helpings were generous. Small pieces of carrot cake and German chocolate cake for dessert that were also very good. We were probably lucky to have finished before a bus party group arrived!! Overall, we enjoyed the pleasant ambiance, good service and the buffet. We would return. read more

I have stayed here on several occasions and I am always impressed on how well they keep this 1938 local treasure of a hotel together. My recent visit was right before Christmas and they had the lobby decorated perfectly. Charming. Remember this building is from 1938 and there is a lot of wear on this landmark. There is no luxury however for what it is I give, I give it 5 stars. The rooms are always fresh and clean. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Look forward to returning again in the future. This is an old historic inn with beautiful architecture. The place is very old elegant, but the food is anything but elegant. We stop with a bus load of 40+ people and have the buffet. Food it average, but there aren't a lot of places to eat in that area of the world. If you are staying at the local marina on your boat, the restaurant will come pick you up at the dock and bring you back. read more

ME and my family stayed here in April and it was real nice. The rooms was very clean and the maids was very accomodatig. They was very friendly people. lizards - The small lizards that are near the place are real friendly as well. I stayed in apartment 2 and the rest of my family members stayed in apartment 1.There's a little bush right next to the apartments and sometimes when I come out of the room in the morning I'll see the little lizards "chillin". After a few days they got used to me and wouldn't run away when I came outside. They're very friendly and small so you shouldn't be afraid of them. wifi - the wifi is located in the main part of the hotel. Don't get an apartment in the back if you want to use wifi because it doesn;t worj back there. IF you want to use wifi privately in your room you will have to rent in the main part of the hotel. the food - The free breakfast was so so. My grandmother was complaining about too much salt on the food. I also heard other people at the tables complainig about it. the ghosts - I honestly believe theis place is haunted. We stayed in the apartments so we didn't get a chance to see the "neighboring ghost" iun the main part of the hotel but I did experience some odd stuff during our stay. ONE day when my grandmother left her room and all the family was in the living room. There was no windows open and the air condition wasn't on. All of a sudden her bedroom door started moving. I would also hear sounds of objects moving in the kitchen late at night. But, it wasn't disturbing and theghost seemed very nonthreatening. read more

I checked in on a Saturday and saw one bug which I thought was a water bug but the next night when I return to my room after being gone all day I saw multiple roaches. I tried to call the front desk and the phone was not even connected. When I called on my cellphone they only offered me another room and refused to give me a refund. I immediately left and checked in to another hotel. This place is horrible and the continental breakfast looked like a 5 year old made it!! The rooms are old & outdated and infested with roaches!! We stayed on Sunday May 24th, 2015. It was not the hotel we visited around 4 years ago. When we checked inn and asked for the 2nd floor which was were we stayed before we were told they were all dirty due to an event the night before. The room we stayed in looked like it hadn't been clean properly. The floor was dirty, there was even some sport tape that was left in the shower by the previous previous guest. We decided to overlook the flaws and stayed thinking about the breakfast we had 4 years ago. As we headed to the restaurant for breakfast we noticed it was closed, then we realized that tho wasn't the hotel we stayed in before. There was a continental breakfast that consisted of a breakfast pastry,bread, hard boiled eggs, cereal, yogurt, juice and coffee. In our minds, when we stayed we had imagined the breakfast we had 4 years ago which was completely different. Overall I think we had high expectations that were shattered. It's a shame because it's a beautiful hotel with so much history. We will not be staying here again. read more

The bed was very comfortable. The Inn was listed as "historic" and the lobby was interesting, but as soon as you walked in, you could smell a musty odor. The photos on the web showed a lovely restaurant setting, but the restaurant had been closed since 2014 with no plans to re-open. The lobby did have a flair with historic and antique pieces, but the door to the office was open and you could see boxes and an unkemptness about it. The dining room was not set up at all which made the Inn look very uninviting. The room was small. The bathroom was tight and had no place to place your things, so I had to put the toilet seat down to have a place for my items while getting dressed. Once we got the air conditioner going the musty smell went away. We asked the staff for directions to the Lake Okeechobee but they seemed unaware. The town is not upscale and there was no where to really have a nice meal. A lot of the places seemed closed. The staff was not that friendly and information on things to do there was lacking. I think if they updated the Inn and re-opened the restaurant, it would be a centerpiece for the town and would invite tourists in. It is a shame as the Inn is in the center of town, and they are missing a great business opportunity. Continental breakfast had no flair. You served yourself from tupperware containers. I have stayed here several times while working in the area. Staff is very friendly. Bed soft, rooms are older furniture that add to this nostalgic place. The mural in the lounge is a one of a kind. Thr front counter and lobby are all wooden with cubby holes for the room keys. Its very old but quaint if you like history. read more
