My voice teacher suggested I see a speech therapist for my low to moderate case of Muscle Tension…read moreDysphonia (MTD) which causes me to get hoarse very easily when performing. I'm so grateful that my online research led me to Gaida. She has helped me find my true voice and taught me proper placement so I no longer strain my vocal chords. I now have a fun regiment of warm up exercises that I do on a daily basis and before every audition and performance. She also has a beautiful singing voice, and has helped me reach notes I thought were gone forever. And even more importantly, she has helped me address my swallowing/choking problems that used to hit me out of nowhere. Our sessions are productive and lots of fun. On top of being a professional and so easy to work with, she's an amazing sweet and fun person.

In just a few short weeks I there was a significant improvement and I was no longer having people ask me "what did he say." Mr. Paul has an excellent demeanor and connects well with his students. He has really been a wonderful teacher to my son by keeping him interested with the techniques he uses yet still focused during his lessons. I could not get through a complete sentence without coughing, and I had to use a microphone to teach in a very small classroom. Over the course of those 3+ years, I saw a slew of doctors and took medication for asthma and acid reflux disease, and prednisone--logical for my symptoms, but useless. While anything life threatening had been ruled out, the quality of my life was extremely diminished. I had given up trying to find solutions which would only involve more tests and more meds, and resolved to accept it as a handicap I had to learn to live with. That was until I completely lost my voice for about 3 weeks. Feeling desperate, I consulted once again my pulmonologist, who suggested I seek out a voice specialist. I found an ENT at NYU, who referred me to Amanda Hembree, the owner of Westside Voice. After doing an evaluation, Amanda gave me a set of vocal exercises. The improvement has been dramatic and noticeable. She has helped me gain insight into how I have been breathing and using my vocal cords incorrectly. Friends and family have remarked on the improvement in the quality of my voice and the fact that I can now utter complete sentences without coughing. While I still have problems with the cough at times, it no longer dogs me all the time and I feel like a new woman. I strongly recommend Amanda Hembree to anyone experiencing vocal cord problems. Caveat: she does not participate in an insurance network apart from Medicare. If your insurance plan does not reimburse for out of network providers, you pay out of pocket. I am grateful that I can handle the cost right now and I don't regret a penny of it.

We had early intervention until she was 3 yrs old but it was not enough. We had seen another speech therapist and saw very little progress. My daughter looked forward to going and was showing improvement in her speech and in other areas where she had delay. I recommend Lauren 100%! I was extremely skeptical that Tomatis might have any effect on me. Boy was I wrong!…read more Sue was an extremely efficient therapist and her history of being a leading edge OT practitioner allowed her to easily settle me and start me listening to my first 15 days/30 hours. It took a little while to get used to the music, but it was not a problem, and I soon found ways to keep myself busy. The results were, for me, subtle but substantial, including being told that I had sung on key for the first time in my life. Furthermore, I felt better placed to cope with life in the city. I was energized, and my memory was improved and more effective. Overall, I felt better toned and able to act as if I was in control of my life. I recommended it to my teenage daughter who was "stuck" with making decisions in her life. After a couple of sessions in the first loop, she reengaged her energy and started moving forward again with her life. My step-daughter needed a boost before sitting her GMAT exam. It improved her focus and the score she received. I have read much about the neuroplasticity impact of music and Tomatis, but experiencing it both when I trained and in my life afterwards made me extremely glad that I tried the process. I researched practitioners in the NYC area and the costs were competitive. However, with the input and support Sue Sonkin provided you feel as if you are in a deep nurturing therapeutic relationship. It was, in my opinion, so good I did it for a second time two years later to solidify the effects. Well worth the time and money.

He learns something new almost every session (he said a new word after just their first session, after not saying any new words for 6 months!), and now his speech is really taking off. Debbie is PROMPT-certified, and this type of therapy seems to be very efficient in treating our son's speech motor planning difficulties. During their sessions, she can now cue him to say complete words, component by component. I am blown away listening to it. She has built an amazing rapport with our son so that he somehow sits still, completely engaged, for half-hour long sessions, tries to make sounds on command, and has fun the whole time. She is so positive, and encourages him to try without ever making him feel pressured. She also quickly got to know him and what would hold his interest. We are constantly impressed with her skill, professionalism, patience, and resourcefulness, and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a speech therapist! I should also add that she has been very helpful providing me with all the necessary information to try and get speech therapy covered by insurance. And she is consistently on time or early to sessions. We feel so lucky to have found her, through the recommendation of the dentist that did our son's tongue tie surgery.

We highly recommend Debbie Shiwbalak for speech therapy. Debbie worked with our 2-year-old son (LP)…read moreon his speech delay, and she was amazing. LP's language comprehension was excellent, but he was saying very few words, but because he had no other delays, we didn't qualify for city-sponsored Early Intervention. We hired Debbie (reimbursed by our health insurance) and are glad we did. We loved the way Debbie immediately and directly engaged with LP, without any bureaucratic BS or adult-to-adult evaluations that might have made our kiddo uneasy. Instead, she went right to play time and language training, and LP, who can sometimes be reserved around new people, quickly and completely connected with her. Their playtime together was energetic, fun and most of all productive for his spoken language development. Debbie's manner of encouraging the flow of speech the course of natural interactions was very comforting. Her structured play time let LP have fun while it was also making it clear to him that he was there to learn. Her method of touching his face and mouth to encourage speech was gentle and natural, and LP clearly took to it. Meeting once or twice a week for about less than two months, Debbie taught us a lot about how to help LP talk more, and pretty soon he "graduated," as he's now repeating our words and excited to talk. All in all, we couldn't recommend Debbie more, so if your child is having any kind of speech issues, definitely contact Debbie.
