No air conditioning, and also they were against patients opening up their room windows for fresh air. They allowed patients to blast their TV almost to the max volume late nights after midnight. Sometimes the food wasn't well cooked. A lady name Robin who worked there, at times she wouldn't open the door for patients after we went out back to smoke cigarettes. Such an unprofessional place, I definitely give this place a thumbs down. I was a patient there in early 2026, wish the Doctor would have sent me someplace else, it was a bad experience there.

The current management at Gardena Retirement Center is completely unreasonable. They have turned a…read moreformerly acceptable assisted living facility into a prison. Residents are shut into the rooms and cut off from contact with the outside world. Guests are required to call the facility the day before they want to visit a resident. It does not matter if there is an emergency, or sudden illness or injury. The staff will not let guests in to see their family members without an appointment. It seems they are trying to hide things from the public. To make it worse, there are very few staff members that speak English. Only a few employees will ever answer the phone. When guest call to make an appointment to visit, they may spend several days calling before anyone answers. The non English speaking employees get tired of listening to the phone ringing, so they pick up the receiver and then hang up. Guests know that the majority of the time, they will be hung up on by the staff. This behavior by the staff is designed to keep guests away. It was never like this under the former management. Today I called repeatedly from 4:30 PM until 11:15 PM, before a staff member answered the phone. I experience this every time I need an appointment. Most people probably would give up, but I won't give the manager that satisfaction. I just wear a headset and put my phone on redial for hours and hours. Can you imagine a manager that wants to prevent elderly residents from having guests? That is Susie Fuentes. These are residents that could die at any time, and their families are being prevented from visiting them! It seems criminal. Yet any time anyone shows up for a visit without an appointment, they are turned away. The only reason given is that "those are the rules". There is no logic to this policy! The rules are not based on the capacity of the facility, or on how many guests a resident has seen that day. It doesn't matter if the guest comes to visit during visiting hours either. They have to call and get through to a staff member, the previous day to be permitted inside. So no one can drop by when they are in the neighborhood, they will be turned away. Here is a screenshot of my "recent calls" to make an appointment.

We lived in our own house in West Torrance since 1971. During the last two years we decided to tour…read moreassisted living facilities in our area and further south. We also were concerned that just taking tours with a sales person was misleading. We were aware that people were leaving one failed facility and going to another with the hope of better treatment. We felt uncertain about leaving our beautiful home and moving into this unknown world. We have been at Cogir of South Bay for just over a month. We are going no further. We are here to stay! We are both overjoyed with our decision. Each day brings us a dining room with our new friends. We all have learned to expect a tasty and attractive looking meal will be presented to us. In our past we only dined so well on special occasions at our favorite expensive restaurants. At dinner time I get my wine. Instead of sleeping in late and watching lots of TV, we attend the 9:30 AM exercise classes in the gym or outside alongside the pool. In addition, we now do our weekly exercises at 1:30 PM inside the heated pool when the sun is strongest. Today the pool water temperature was over 90oF and the air was 73oF. The pool exercises included music and aquatic hardware to enhance our experience. I love my daily swim. Thursdays, before dinner, there is always going to be a singer who performs alongside the bar and also comes up to each of us seated at our table. It already started. We enjoyed our drink from the bar, snacks from the side table, and a bouquet of flowers on our table. A resident took the microphone from the performer and did a few songs that he mastered during his singing lessons. Two couples got up and danced. One of the assistants working for Cogir took the microphone and sang Edith Piaf's famous song and sang it French. My hands were sore with all the applause. There is an exercise room loaded with weights and other typical hardware that I use, a game room where we learned how to play adult dominoes, and an arts and crafts room where my wife just painted a silk scarf under the supervision of a guest artist. And all that was in the past few days. We enjoy the trees, shrubbery and plants that surround every area. They were each planted at their full size. It is a pretty scene when we look down at the grounds from our balcony, day or night. When there is a breeze, it is even more enjoyable. We have a pantry, refrigerator, freezer, stove and microwave that we have not yet used. Why shop, cook and clean-up when your meals are prepared for you? I store my socks and underthings in the empty food pantry. We no longer have monthly TV, electricity, gas, and garbage pickup expenses. Since this place is brand new and all expenses are included, we don't worry about scheduled maintenance and surprise repair bills typical of our 50-year old home. Since I was an engineer I focused on the material parts of Cogir. What make this place run smoothly are the executive director and her staff. The Matre D' in the dining room makes each meal personal. WIth great satisfaction, Dr. Paul and Gretel Lieberman

I have also volunteered here for many hours and the service is excellent. Keep in mind this is a retirement home so they do not have any nurses on staff. They have many amenities for the residents to enjoy. They have movie nights, game nights, a pool table, koi pond, computers, library, barber shop, putting green and a full dining area. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The dining area is a full service "restaurant". They have waiters/waitresses to deliver food and drinks. They also provide bus rides to dr. appointments/grocery shopping. The staff here is amazing. All of them are so friendly and they know all of the residents names. It gives it that personal touch an you don't get the feeling of "you're just another person in this facility." They always have someone at the front desk. All the doors get locked up at sun down so you know the location is safe. They offer 1 and 2 bedroom apartment style units. My grandparents had a 1 bedroom unit an it was on the border of close to $5,000 per month. When you walk in, you step into a room that is a combo of your kitchen and living room. You also have a connecting balcony from this room. The bedroom is located to the side and that is where the bathroom and a walk-in closet is also located. If I had to guess, the place is around 500 sq. feet. Keep in mind that since this the nicest senior living place in the area and the cost is pretty high. IMO, if you can afford it, this is a great place to live out your golden years.
