It was all I could do not to gobble them up in one sitting. V loved them too, and I overheard him bragging to friends about how good they are. This week I returned and purchased four New York Strip steaks. Our guests doted on the steaks, and now V says we're not buying meat anywhere else. At each visit a different employee served me. The first was very helpful, as I asked questions about the cuts of meat, and how they handle them. A the second I asked more about the meat sticks, and the young man was very helpful, explaining which were his favoriates, and which were the best sellers. I'm a big fan of Dave's Meat Market.

Was visiting Plainfield for a wedding this weekend from…read moreChicago and stopped by after checking out after a friend recommended this shop. We grabbed ribeyes, filets, Italian sausage and wagyu burgers to try. Made the ribeyes and filets tonight and they were so freaking good. Such a difference between a Jewel or Mariano's bought product of the same and this shops'. We put the steaks on the smoker and they melted in our mouths like butter. So amazing. We're trying the rest out later this week. Too bad we don't live closer here!! We'd be broke haha.

Turn around time is a little slower than most but after tasting the finished product its worth the wait. Staff is super friendly and willing to answer any questions you might have. Besides the normal chops and ground, I had them make a portion of each sausage they offered and they never balked at the request. Lisbon Locker will be processing all my deer from here out. Life often takes us on weird twists and turns. Days, even weeks, go by without any change in plans…read more Get up, go to work, make dinner, go to bed. Repeat until Saturday. This was my life until something amazing happened. Christmas in July. I got a phone call three weeks ago. My friend's parents were raising free ranging red waddle pigs on their pasture and had planned to process them soon. It was a life changing event and I did everything possible to buy into the bounty. I left early from work one day to visit the pigs. I petted them, played with them, and listened to them 'oink' their way around their pen. In pig language, they were in heaven. Albeit a damn filthy one but to a pig there's nothing better. I fully admit that it's not easy to play with a pig that will soon be in your freezer but I'd take that over the other way around. I helped load the pigs into a truck and off to S & J's Lisbon Locker it went. Then it hit me. The moment that all meat eaters don't ever want to feel. I'm killing something. Not literally of course but my actions helped take the end of this pigs life. As a meat eater, I realized that I needed to do everything I could to respect that pig. Days later I placed my order; 1/2 of the pig along with any oddments (heart, jowl, liver, hocks/feet, lard). This is where respect entered my head. 'Don't waste it'. I found myself repeating these words internally. S & J's placed a call to me yesterday. My order was ready. I drove the hour plus at 7 AM from Chicago to Newark, IL dreaming of a simpler life. Farms, barnyard animals, growing my own crops. I was in farm country and began dreaming the lifestyle. I pulled up to the ragged building and entered. A mild smoke flavor filled the room and a gentleman took my name. I grabbed a few extra pounds of bacon from the nearby freezer along with some ground beef and ribs. I was excited to see this section of for sale items besides the pig I was about to receive. I paid in cash (no credit accepted) and he went back to pull the pig from the freezer. A few minutes later he wheeled it out the door on a shaky cart and I loaded the cuts piece by piece into my cooler. Each section was wrapped with butcher paper and taped shut. 'Don't waste it' I thought again. I rolled the cart back inside and waved goodbye. Off I went. Tomorrow I'll take my first bite of a free ranging pasture raised animal that I was involved with. I'm excited. Christmas in July. I'm looking forward to working with the family raising the pigs and this meat locker in the future. It's great to know that I am one step closer to taking my eating habits 'off the grid'. The experience was rewarding and eye opening all at the same time. Life changing moments seldom come and it makes me proud to know that one person can help make a difference.

Over the past year, this farm has become my go-to source for oats, corn, and wheat. They have…read moreorganic, heirloom varieties I haven't seen anywhere else, their berries are clean and taste great, and prices so cheap I'm actually slightly concerned about the farm's long-term viability. (Please don't ever go out of business, my family needs you!) Also, what I appreciate most is how much they care about quality. They focus on organic, heirloom grains such as Turkey Red and Purple Straw wheats, Henry Moore Yellow Dent corn. Their website has a lot of useful information -- why heirloom varieties, why stone-ground, etc -- and I've learned a lot from talking to them, they're extremely helpful and seem passionate about what they do. Their packages also list the date that the berries were ground, and most of the time it's only a few days old. That's just not something you can get at the supermarket, where the product is months old before it even hits the shelves, or even co-ops or larger operations such as Janie's Mill, where I think it still runs weeks.

It's used to kill the plant so the oats start to dry sooner and are easier to harvest. It is strictly prohibited by the USDA's National Organic Program. Bad stuff to ingest. Never saw oats on "The Dirty Dozen" list of foods to buy Organic only, but it should be there. We started buying our oat groats at the local store which carried the Bob's Red Mill Organic ones. Then we found Brian Severson Farms online. Great product at a much cheaper price, even including shipping. All of their crops are non-GMO and many certified organic. Everything is grown and processed on their farm. According to their website, they carry wheat products, oat products, organic blue,red and white corn products, non-GMO yellow corn products, popcorn and popcorn flour and buckwheat flour. I ordered online and our oat groats arrived within a week. We are happy to have found this company and will use them again. * * *Update March 1 * * * I just ordered 15 pounds of their non-GMO and certified organic heirloom Pennsylvania Dutch Butter Popcorn.
