I met Futai in Zen setting when he was practicing at another zendo; He taught me the basics there. His new practice is humble but great for beginners and experienced students alike. Futai makes you feel comfortable when other zendo a may feel intimidating or too rigid. Clear Stream also sends out newsletters with different topics of reflection that are then touched upon during zazen. If you're new to zen or are looking for a true community feel from a relatable teacher, come to clear stream. read more

Clear Stream Zendo offers an opportunity to practice Zen Buddhism in the White Plum tradition established by Maezumi Roshi. While creating our own American expression, we endeavor to keep it real and relevant to our daily lives. Clear Stream Zendo practices in-person meditation at this location on Saturday. All other posted days and hours are via zoom.

History

Established in 2020.

Clear Stream Zendo is a new group in Eugene, Oregon, which began during the Covid Pandemic with the benefit of Zoom technology. People join in and practice together on Zoom from all over the U.S. This year we have added in-person zazen in Eugene Oregon. Our members are all ages and backgrounds. The common thread is a curiosity to investigate who and how we are and to share and learn from each other. Futai guides with wisdom enriched by a long life of practice and leaves titles and dogma at the door.

Meet the Business Owner: Futai R.

Futai began practicing with Maezumi Roshi at the Zen Center of Los Angeles in 1971. He lived at the center and was on staff in the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s doing formal koan study with Maezumi Roshi and other teachers in the lineage. In 2020, Futai received Dharma Transmission from Jitsudo Ancheta Roshi, a Dharma Successor of Maezumi Roshi, who also received Inka from Bernie Glassman Roshi. Currently, Futai is a member of the White Plum Asangha, the organization of Zen teachers descended from Maezumi Roshi. From the late 80’s until retiring in 2015, Futai’s primary practice was his family, caring for his business “Zen Plumbing,” and his work as Senior Building Inspector for the City of Los Angeles. In 2015 he retired to the Eugene area with his wife Senkei

I used to be an irregular member. My work schedule changed frequently which meant that sometimes…read moremonths would go by without being able to attend. Still, I always felt welcome and received as I popped in and out, especially by the teacher who completely understood my circumstance. Having our own space now allows a more robust schedule, including Thursdays and Sundays, and this means I can train weekly. When I was new, I loved the silent tea service which is offered in the evening on Tuesday. Such a simple ritual, but so full of depth! The free lunch after sitting meditation on Sundays offers a similar opportunity to practice mindfulness while eating and moving. The best part of the practice is the personal guidance that any participant can receive from the teacher. Her words and guidance have allowed me to navigate some terrible storms in my life, and they keep pushing me to open more and more.
