This large statue commemorates Claudio Moyano (1809-1890) who is known as the father of the modern educational system of Madrid. In 1857, he was chiefly responsible for the "Public Instruction Law" that later was known as Moyano Law that reformed Spanish teaching and was in place until 1970 when it was replaced by the General Law of Education.
Politician, lawyer and university professor, he studied law, Latin and philosophy at the uninversities of Salamanca and Valladolid. He took a doctorate at age 23 and practiced law for two years. He was mayor of Valladolid for some time before serving in the Ministry of Development and later was senator for Madrid from 1881.
