Built between 1950 and 1956, the Victory Arch (also known as Moncloa Gate) is similar to the Alcalá Gate closer to central Madrid. Built to commemorate the victory of Franco in the Spanish Civil War (when the Republicans fought the Nationalists between 1936 and 1939). Franco and the Nationalists won, ruling Spain until Franco's death in 1975.
Located on one of the main roadways into Madrid (the A-6), it is in the center of the Arco de la Victoria Avenue at Plaza de la Moncloa. The Arch is 40 meters (130 feet) tall. Atop the Arch is a copper sculpture of a chariot being driven by Minerva.
The plaza has seen better days with uneven concrete and broken/crumbling stairs. The arch could use a good cleaning and there is some unfortunate spray-painted graffiti. The structure is not open to public access.
