This morning, I delayed an appointment because The Debaters was on the radio…read more SO giddy was I, that I sent a quick apology to my 11:30, hunkered down into my parked car, and spent a half hour voluntarily huddled on the side of the road, giggling over a coffee. And in that moment of pure radio gluttony, I knew CBC would be my #200. I'm a bonafide CBC radio fangirl. I know, I know... it's a hip and glamourous declaration indeed, but it's true. Maybe it was eight straight hours on every road trip out to Alberta; or the excitement of seeing those blue highway signs after 100km of no reception... or the summer that my cd player stopped working and I decided I was too "hip" for top 40's, instead hunkering down to the Q and As It Happens in traffic...somewhere along the lines, CBC radio one became less of a creature comfort or nostalgic outlet and more of a current obsession. Now on any given day, i'll check in to see what's what in Canadiana. As It Happens, The Q, The Debaters - all staples in my CBC fan book. But I suppose the thing I appreciate the most is the one-offs you stumble upon. Sure, sometimes there are dud programs... like the ones with the flowery poetry and the very enthusiastic someone manning a musical triangle... but often, i'll stumble upon a total gem. It might be a great yarn of a story, or something that reminds me of home; maybe i'll recognize someone, or stumble upon a local artist I hadn't heard of; sometimes it's Steward Maclean telling Dave Cooks The Turkey in the middle of the summer... the point is that it's a smorgasborg of art, culture and stories that I wouldn't otherwise seek out, but am better off for having heard them. And with world news on the hour and local every half, you can hear a grand yarn, catch up on the world, check up on what's down the street and learn how to be debt free in 60 minutes. Not too bad eh? So CBC radio, I tip my hat to you in the most enthusiastic of fashions - thank you for not changing anything about your programming long enough for me to reach an age where I finally appreciate it.

The ladies aren't so bad, but Kid, true to his name, is like listening to the class clown who constantly interrupted the Grade 10 English teacher. This morning they were trying to convince the single people of Vancouver that they should pay $60 to go to Pop Opera (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/pop-opera-vancouver#hrid:r2CPtB9SNfVEe6h3wnjppg) for some singles night to hook up with a "snuggle buddy" before Valentine's day. Gag. Do people listen to this crap? Really? They followed up by playing some top 40 dance anthem. Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Kevin Rudolf f/ Lil Wayne are the current "Top 5" on their playlist and Miss Spears features twice in their Top 10. I do have to give props to the staff member who has to decide what's going to make "the worst of Kid Carson" clips. They have a LOT of bad commentary to review.

Ever since the Harper government got rid of the late night new music/alternative programming like…read more'Brave New Waves', and replaced it with bland fare with no hosts, and axed Jurgen Goth's Disc Drive in the afternoons, and replaced it with programming that sounds like a dull adult contemporary station, it just isn't what it used to be. The AM side in the afternoon with Stephen Quinn is preferable to me. I went online to BBC 6 Music after the death of Brave New Waves. It reminds me of what the indie/alternative music programming used to be like on CBC Radio 2, with live bands in to play and the on-air people programming their own music.

K'naan - Take a Minute Never heard this song before. I hope it's the last. David Guetta, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne - I Can Only Imagine I can only imagine how these 3 dudes are laughing all the way to the bank. Already 3 songs in and there's commercials. Not different than other stations I've reviewed so far. Nicky Minaj - Pound the Alarm Actually is not a bad song. A real Republic dance floor burner. Although I have no wish to listen to this again. Kanye West - Stronger Relies heavily on Daft Punk's "Harder, Faster, Stronger". It's a strange choice because most of the time, hip hop artists will use samples from hidden gems. Daft Punk is not a hidden gem. Mia Martina and Adrian Sina - Go Crazy Not a completely annoying song, but pretty boring basic dance floor number. I see a pattern of three here. I wonder if there's actually someone programming these songs, or if it's just done by a computer. The on air host came back to talk a bit about nothing really. Not really sure what her purpose is, but they went back to music which is different than other stations have. Maroon 5 - One More Night These guys were on the soft rock station too. I don't really understand. This song is by far the worst one played. Dragonette - Live in this City I was wondering when the CanCon content was going to come out. It has hampered radio stations for years, and continues to ruin Canadian artists, but I feel some are catching on to realize they can be that niche Canadian artist that gets play on Canadian radio. This song is incredibly plain and boring. Fun - Some Nights I guess this is as "alternative" as Sonic gets. I would not have recognized any of these songs, but their website actually had live updating of the songs that were playing, even with with tabs so you could buy and download the song. I believe that Sonic is a group that has stations across Canada. It seems like a well run station with a web site that is easily navigatable, if you're into any of the music.

Bryan Adams, "Somebody" Pearl Jam, "Alive" Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Aerosmith, "Crazy" Very little DJ and lots of music with a few commercials. It's another of the "Playing what we want" format stations with a variety of 80s and 90s and 2000s music. [Review 20867 overall - 44 in British Columbia - 1851 of 2023.]

They've got a little better lately. Their 80's selection is still better than their post-80's…read moreselection, but they've added some uptempo more recent songs into their mix which they should have done a long time ago. They repeat many of their CanCon songs too often. Otherwise the variety is good. Don't be fooled by the "playing what we want" mantra by the way. You'll rarely hear anything on the station that hasn't been a top 10 hit either in Canada, US or both. There's quirky songs, to be sure, but all hits. An on-air presence during the PM rush hour would be nice, but hey, if you want chit chat this isn't the station for you. This the the station for you if you like lots of music.

CiTR is operated by UBC students and community volunteers under the ownership of the Student Radio Society of the University of British Columbia, an entity closely affiliated with UBC's Alma Mater Society. Shortly after high school I started contributing directly and indirectly to CITR. I have them to thank for really pushing me into writing about music and exploring what is beyond mainstream. I met some awesome DJ's, participating in working with some of the most awesome people, and even worked on air a few times. It was a very welcoming club on campus that allowed me to be a part of something that wasn't a sport. I did write for Discorder before branching out and doing my thing.

The Peak is no more. Well, not exactly -- it's digital now. 102.7 traditional radio has a new…read moreformat. Based on the Peak's recent ratings, change was overdue. So how good is the station? A matter of taste, but worth at least a few listens. Music: 3 stars. Like most stations these days, the playlist is repetitive However, you get songs off the beaten track, mostly through requests, more often than other stations. The request segments are mostly genuine requests, not songs-they-play-anyhow songs. On the balance, the type of music sounds like about 80 percent Z95.3, and 20 percent Jack FM. Two issues: repeating popular songs every 2 hours on a variety and conversation station isn't the way to attract listeners wanting a regular station. Also, the Cancon regulation is an issue for many stations including this one, but there's got to be a better way of filling the Canadian content requirement than playing a song by the Weeknd every hour. Conversation: 2.5 stars. I have no idea what the Now topics are like in other markets, but they're usually very light. Sometimes it's fun to hear listener stories, but personally I'd like to hear topics sometimes with a little more depth. Granted, I'm at the upper end of their 25-54 target market and the station isn't intending to compete with CKNW, but we don't need topics to include stories of passing gas, for instance. Programming: 3.5 stars. The on-air hosts genuinely seem to enjoy themselves and it's refreshing to hear live programming rather than mass-marketed playlists. The hosts don't need to repeat the same weather forecast every 10 minutes on the morning show, though.

It was my…read morefirst time back in the community radio space after about 5years, when they were last located further East on Wall St. My understanding from folks is that the location moved around a bit in the last decade as renovations were being done. I have memories of the Station from as far back as when it was on the block by Army & Navy. This new space is bright with lots of windows and each booth carries an Indigenous name acknowledge its positionality on these unceaded lands Co-op community radio has always been a source of connection. It's people bringing in content, grassroots in the moment happenings. With our proximity and awareness of First Nations actions of resistance just a few streets away it was an important piece to that nights programming to carry awareness into the shows content in addition to my visit helping to 'daylight' Black History Month and disability justice. Co-op is a forum for building community and fostering allyship whether a producer listener supporter, there's room to plug in to community radio.

My favorite program is Radio Bandcouver on Thursdays at 3PM. Co-Op radio is a very under appreciated gem in Vancouver that could use a more profound following than the Commercial Drive hippies. In addition to their programming, they also teach interested people how to run their own station/programming. They have radio orientation/lessons every 3rd Tuesday of the month. My only complaint is that they dont have any syndicated programing on here, but with some more fans they might? Although radio is a dying breed often used as an un-distracting background noise at work, I believe this station may have something worth listening to once in a while.
