I have memories of the Station from as far back as when it was on the block by Army & Navy. This new space is bright with lots of windows and each booth carries an Indigenous name acknowledge its positionality on these unceaded lands Co-op community radio has always been a source of connection. It's people bringing in content, grassroots in the moment happenings. With our proximity and awareness of First Nations actions of resistance just a few streets away it was an important piece to that nights programming to carry awareness into the shows content in addition to my visit helping to 'daylight' Black History Month and disability justice. Co-op is a forum for building community and fostering allyship whether a producer listener supporter, there's room to plug in to community radio.

My favorite program is Radio Bandcouver on Thursdays at 3PM. Co-Op radio is a very under appreciated gem in Vancouver that could use a more profound following than the Commercial Drive hippies. In addition to their programming, they also teach interested people how to run their own station/programming. They have radio orientation/lessons every 3rd Tuesday of the month. My only complaint is that they dont have any syndicated programing on here, but with some more fans they might? Although radio is a dying breed often used as an un-distracting background noise at work, I believe this station may have something worth listening to once in a while. On a weekly basis, we get to hear Randy sap the excitement and enthusiasm out of beloved rock classics with just a couple of tired strums from his guitar and a phoning-it-in vocal. But there's also a history lesson involved. Really, Randy? The Beatles were influenced by Motown? What other trenchant insights into the world of classic rock do you have? Oh, the fact that "Big Old Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller sounds like "Taking Care of Business?" FASCINATIN....zzzzzzz. I'm being nice and giving it another star because sometimes golden oldies beat the hell out of what passes for radio in our fair city of Toronto. But, this is the aural equivalent of the willies.

Back in Randy Bachman's youth, if you wanted to play an electric guitar, you had to grow, fell, and mill the tree. That's why, 30-odd years later, Seattle grunge rockers dressed like early Canadian coureurs du bois. This was a knowing tribute to pathfinders like Randy. Then, if you wanted to put strings and pickups on your electric guitar, you had to mine the nickel yourself. That's why there's now that big hole in the ground in Sudbury, kids: It's where all that tone was born, during the famous Southern Ontario Nickel Rush of 1959-75. (Today's rock musicians face a new problem: tightening restrictions on the endangered tropical tonewoods that make the best-sounding axes. Blame this on a Mahogany Rush that started in Montreal, toward the end of that period.) The rest of the 1970s were a sad time, the global Dark Age of Disco. Keyboards and synths went nuts; rock was in retreat, and went back underground. Inspired by the period's ecological ethos, some recycling-minded young rockers even tried to bring the nickelback. Today, for two hours every weekend, Randy - a true rock'n'roll survivor, and a gifted raconteur - spins tales like this to enlighten us. While also spinning an enjoyable, and intelligently themed, selection of discs from the days when music was music. With no idiot commercials. And all we have to do is sit back, listen, and enjoy. Sometimes we event get Randy's recollections of studying with Winnipeg jazz genius guitarist Lenny Breau. Is that really so bad? Don Taylor is what really drives the afternoon show, at least for me, as well as Ray Ferraro, former player, as an analyst in the 3-4pm slot. Same for Doug Maclean, former GM for Florida Panthers, who is always hilarious yet can give a management opinion too. And he's fair, not like those typical homer fans who call in, just incredulous, really at the stuff they say; that's why I listen lol. Finally on Saturday mornings, Dave Randorf hosts his business of sports, quite knowledgeable about franchise values, attendance figures, etc.

This morning, I delayed an appointment because The Debaters was on the radio…read more SO giddy was I, that I sent a quick apology to my 11:30, hunkered down into my parked car, and spent a half hour voluntarily huddled on the side of the road, giggling over a coffee. And in that moment of pure radio gluttony, I knew CBC would be my #200. I'm a bonafide CBC radio fangirl. I know, I know... it's a hip and glamourous declaration indeed, but it's true. Maybe it was eight straight hours on every road trip out to Alberta; or the excitement of seeing those blue highway signs after 100km of no reception... or the summer that my cd player stopped working and I decided I was too "hip" for top 40's, instead hunkering down to the Q and As It Happens in traffic...somewhere along the lines, CBC radio one became less of a creature comfort or nostalgic outlet and more of a current obsession. Now on any given day, i'll check in to see what's what in Canadiana. As It Happens, The Q, The Debaters - all staples in my CBC fan book. But I suppose the thing I appreciate the most is the one-offs you stumble upon. Sure, sometimes there are dud programs... like the ones with the flowery poetry and the very enthusiastic someone manning a musical triangle... but often, i'll stumble upon a total gem. It might be a great yarn of a story, or something that reminds me of home; maybe i'll recognize someone, or stumble upon a local artist I hadn't heard of; sometimes it's Steward Maclean telling Dave Cooks The Turkey in the middle of the summer... the point is that it's a smorgasborg of art, culture and stories that I wouldn't otherwise seek out, but am better off for having heard them. And with world news on the hour and local every half, you can hear a grand yarn, catch up on the world, check up on what's down the street and learn how to be debt free in 60 minutes. Not too bad eh? So CBC radio, I tip my hat to you in the most enthusiastic of fashions - thank you for not changing anything about your programming long enough for me to reach an age where I finally appreciate it.

I hate reading articles in the Straight and they're trying to tell me what my opinion should be, no thanks. And then in the articles, such as on the plate with Andrew Morrison, now obviously these are excrutiatingly subject, and we should all know that. Though, his articles tend to have personality, you get the feeling that you are having a conversation with Mr Morrison. All around WE is far superiour to the Georgia Straight, and always provides a great read.

When I first moved to Vancouver years ago, it was a time when the prevalence of the internet and its unyielding powers had yet to take over; a time when MySpace and Tom (hi Tom!) were still *the* place to find out about new music and to make new (online) friends; a time when events and concerts were discovered via the newspaper or word of mouth; a time when when some people in the western world who hadn't heard of Craigslist actually existed. It was a time of the alt-weekly. Naturally, I gravitated toward the two most popular weeklies in Vancouver (one of which I worked for, so can't review, but love nonetheless). Which brings me to WE. Formerly known as the Westender, this paper (it would seem) is really trying to up its game these days. It's always (for as long as I've known it) published Rob Brezny's Free Will Astrology (don't know it? You do now. You're welcome), which I adore; and has a relatively high standard in terms of their editorial choices, but what it's always lacked, is an edge. What made the Westender (now known as WE) any better than the competition? (I'm not even joking about the Free Will Astrology. It was the only reason I picked the paper up) What it was deficient of in the years prior, it's gained the the last year or so. Smart hiring of staff and contract writers has made for a more rich and unique reading experience. Yes, there's still Rants and Raves, but now has additions of the likes of Kurtis Kolt (Vancouver wine darling/expert/consultant/all-around nice guy) and his weekly "City Cellar' column (winos, take note). And though Andrew Morrison has been a restaurant critic for the paper since 2005, his success with his own project, Scout, has made for a much more exposed look into the restaurant scene in Vancouver. Add those to the regular local news and editorials, and this is a quality weekly. It's these, and Rob Brezny that keep me picking the paper up. So keep it up, WE. I think you're hitting a stride.

The Peak is no more. Well, not exactly -- it's digital now. 102.7 traditional radio has a new…read moreformat. Based on the Peak's recent ratings, change was overdue. So how good is the station? A matter of taste, but worth at least a few listens. Music: 3 stars. Like most stations these days, the playlist is repetitive However, you get songs off the beaten track, mostly through requests, more often than other stations. The request segments are mostly genuine requests, not songs-they-play-anyhow songs. On the balance, the type of music sounds like about 80 percent Z95.3, and 20 percent Jack FM. Two issues: repeating popular songs every 2 hours on a variety and conversation station isn't the way to attract listeners wanting a regular station. Also, the Cancon regulation is an issue for many stations including this one, but there's got to be a better way of filling the Canadian content requirement than playing a song by the Weeknd every hour. Conversation: 2.5 stars. I have no idea what the Now topics are like in other markets, but they're usually very light. Sometimes it's fun to hear listener stories, but personally I'd like to hear topics sometimes with a little more depth. Granted, I'm at the upper end of their 25-54 target market and the station isn't intending to compete with CKNW, but we don't need topics to include stories of passing gas, for instance. Programming: 3.5 stars. The on-air hosts genuinely seem to enjoy themselves and it's refreshing to hear live programming rather than mass-marketed playlists. The hosts don't need to repeat the same weather forecast every 10 minutes on the morning show, though.

We enjoy switching to this channel in the early evenings to watch - 'L'Arte Di Cucinare' -- an…read moreItalian cuisine, cooking show, featuring Host and Chef, Gianni Ceschia. Alone, and with guests, presentations and preparations are to -- ... teach viewers how to prepare authentic Italian cuisine in their own kitchens" (to use a quote from the show's website). We enjoy watching Chef Ceschia, and his invited guest Chef;s do their thing in the colourful kitchen they have for the show -- the Chef's own kitchen in his home! It's an interesting and fun cooking show to watch -- so personally and authentically done. Visual presentations of the various recipes are so well-performed, and despite the language barrier for us, are usually quite easy to follow for the 'what' and 'how' of each. An enjoyable break from what's on the dial elsewhere at this time.

The show was very undersold, however, those who in attendance were garage rockers. It was a future…read moreglimpse of what us Strokes fans will look like in the next 20 years. I had the privilege of seeing Television last year at the Primavera Music Festival in Spain. It was one of the few curveball bookings of the festival. Most in attendance were high profile US journalists and only a few who woke up early enough in the Spanish heat check out one of influential bands of the garage scene. As much as I like Television and appreciate the music itself for some reason doesn't translate beyond 200 people. This isn't a bad thing, it is common for many bands of that genre. Live Nation took an economical dare on this booking. They guys had no touring manager (talked some sources before the show on this), no gear (everything was rented), no car (they just walked to and from the venue). They travelled with the bare bones essentials. In other words it didn't matter how many tickets they sold as there were no high costs associated with the show. The show raised moderate interest to major promotors outside festivals to take a chance on smaller bookings. They did do a decent sound check early in the afternoon, therefore, not surprised that they executed the songs well on rented instruments. The sound mix, in spite of them not having their own house mixer, was decent. Then again most bands sound good at the Commodore. The band was very toe gazer and there wasn't much to see beyond the first 20 minutes, however, there was still something captivating. P.S. Meeting the guys before and after the show was a cool treat.
