Chances are you've probably experienced the retail experience local lass Jessy Cameron has created through the online portal of Molten Store. And until last week, with the exception of a few pop-up troves (as the Molten Store physical retail spaces are graciously named), that was the only way to introduce yourself to the collection of jewellery, fragrances and stationery that Jessy sells, or as she describes them; "Otherworldly jewellery and curious gifts." But now comes the biggest trove of them all. Molten Store's very first permanent retail space on James Street. The space itself was once upon a time the Domino's Pizza take-away store but walking into the serene, sophisticated and ethereal space that Jessy and her team have created it would seem a crime that the space was ever used for slinging pizzas. The range is ever changing with Jessy taking buying trips to source pieces from the furtherest corners of the globe. Her intrepid adventures no doubt set to influence the look and feel of the store as it settles into it's new home. I'd often walked past the previous Molten Store troves and found myself thinking, "Oh that is stunning but a) It'll be too expensive and b) that's way to cool for a Liz Lemon like me." And yet walking into the new store I realised both a and b were entirely incorrect assumptions. The prices are incredibly reasonable in my opinion with earrings, for example, ranging from $29-$39 and as for feeling like it was too cool for a Liz Lemon like me. I've discovered that's perhaps the most endearing thing about Molten Store. It's for everyone. Not just the fashionistas that have stepped straight from the pages of Vogue but also for the young professional who wants a little bit of their own edge to an outfit or a bride looking for a set of unique jewels to adorn her ears on her big day or the capsule wardrobe devotee who loves nothing more than a simple silver necklace to compliment her crisp white shirt. As I walked into this store, an older couple, sitting quietly together making beaded necklaces, raised their heads in unison, greeted me into the store and promptly went back to their work. Lovely. This bead store isn't set up like the others in town. There aren't endless aisles of beads here. There are instead, small colour coded collections of beads in pretty arrangements. Individual bead lots are stored in glasses that are then placed upon velvet. They've got some unique beads that you won't find elsewhere too. This is because some of their beads are sourced from American vintage stores. This explains why there aren't hundreds of the same bead available- when the beads run out, they run out for good. They're something special. You are welcome to make your own beadwork in store and enlist the staff (that dear couple I mentioned before) to help you. I don't usually like to be assisted, but when I asked the lady about some of the beads, I realised that she could give an inside story to all of the beads in her store. The jewellery that the couple make in store is perhaps not to my taste, however, they are considerably lovely handmade pieces. Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit that accepts donations of industrial scraps or pays a small fee for them, organises them in a way that is consumer-friendly and sells them, saving "rubbish" from going into landfill. As a sewer, I love their fabric scraps. Most of it's off-cuts of pretty odd shapes but there are some small rolls of fabric too. Selling truly random things like bottle caps, brochures, long tubes of mesh-like fabric--things that would otherwise be considered junk--this is a great place for creative souls, kindergarten teachers in search of craft material and anyone who wants to look first for second-hand materials before buying something new and contributing to the cycle of consumption! I believe if more people knew just how good the service and quality of workmanship was here all of the other alterations businesses would soon be out of business. I often come here and ask If I could get my pants/jeans etc altered within the hour and irrespective of how busy they are they always achieve this without a hassle. They are always friendly and accommodating and I have never been disappointed with the result, on top of that they offer some of the cheapest alterations around. Even the more complex and time consuming alterations like those associated with suiting and leather goods they seem to do it with ease and for an exceptional price.
