Yes it's cheap but actually a lot of it is pretty decent quality too. If your home is in need of a refurb without breaking the bank balance then Wilko's is your store! If you're a sucker for pick n mix at the cinema I'd recommend getting yourself here as they sell Candy King sweets at much cheaper prices. Sometimes a flashback to childhood is just medicine! The only downsides to Wilko's are that the staff always seem irritated if you ask them anything and you will normally have to queue for a fair bit at the tills even when it's quiet.

This is the type of store great for bargain hunters wanting to add some flourish and essentials to their house. This store is huge so I haven't explored it much beyond the pet and stationery sections (the most important bits!) YET, but I can say that these departments are well stocked with a wide selection. As you enter, there's escalators going upstairs to the home department and a cafe, to the right are back-to-school deals and food with 5 till points beyond that. Deeper into the store on the right is the stationery section (which has a good range off DIY and card making goodies) and the pet section is further in with another entrance/exit at the back of the store. The pet aisle is quite big with a good range of own brand treats and branded treats that don't come with the supermarket price tags. The only reason why I'm giving a four-star rating is that there are definitely not enough staff on the tills so the queue was quite long. Also I noticed a lot of dust around and on products... a few more staff members wouldn't go amiss.

The quality of the items which I have purchased has always been excellent, and on the rare occassion that I have had a problem, the staff have handled it well and issued a refund or replacement. Dunelm Mill often have some very good promotions on their bedding, which incidentally is the thing that I tend to shop there for most. They cater for all tastes - whether your home is contemporary or vintage inspired there's bound to be something that you need (or more often just want in my case!). They do charge for delivery, though it is fairly reasonable at £3.95 for standard delivery or £5.95 for the next day service. I've picked up loads bargains here in the past! Everything is discounted so is always cheaper than the usual RRP. I've always found the staff there to be very pleasant and helpful. I never go to the Royal Quays without going in this shop because the stock is updated rregularly so you never know what bargains you might find! Because it is situated in a retail outlet centre it is in amongst a range of shops and there are plenty of places to eat nearby. There are hundreds of free parking spaces and it is quite easy to get to by bus or by metro (Royal Quays is about a 10min walk from Percy Main Metro Station).

TK Maxx is definitely a place to visit if you have a spare afternoon to go through the many racks for hidden gems in a big store. I was particularly excited to see a TK Maxx so close by and was eager to check it out. The store is spread over two floors with ladies fashion, accessories, children, shoes and toys on the the bottom floor and home and mens upstairs. It isn't a busy store so it is quite tidy. The pet section is spread out with the dog toys nicely organised (found a huge rope tug of war toy for the dogs for £4.99 that was very easy to get to) but strangely there are no poop bags in this section until you go to the tills downstairs. The clearance section was dissappointing; it was unnecessarily large for the few items that were there. Not only was it very empty, many of the discounted items were broken but still quite expensive. Although this store does stock similar items to the larger stores, the sizing is limited and the other departments in the store are also quite small. However, small doesn't mean bad! It's a good size as it wouldn't take that long to browse the store in its entirety, so it is still worth a visit if you have an hour to kill. Conveniently, it is right next to other similar discount stores such as SportsDirect, and if you get hungry, McDonald's is right outside. Plus, it is really easy to get to by car, public transport or walking from the nearby areas. Even though I am a big fan of TK Maxx and levitate towards the big red stores, I would however warn of the poor customer service provided at this particular branch. On both occassions, staff have been much more interested in talking amongst each other despite seeing you waiting to be served. When they do eventually serve you, they are completely disinterested in their job and are obviously annoyed by you tearing them away from their chit-chat. I'm not sure if these are just isolated incidents due to the times I visited but I do know that TK Maxx store assistants from other locations have been at least minimally friendly and customer servce assistants from the Kingston Park area are mainly nice. It's a shame but I won't be going there anytime soon. I hope the hiring manager recruits better staff for their Christmas temps they are currently hiring for.

For me, being able to locate a House of Fraser (HOF) in a mall is incredible but this shows the size of the mall is just huge, for those who didn't know the Metrocentre in Gateshead is the UK's largest shopping centre. The floor seemed a little bit uneven in the stores, there seemed to be a slightly steep slope and individual store for every individual store/brand in the department store. None of the staff seemed too welcoming and friendly - a big let down. The store guide and menu right at the front of the store, which some locations such as Manchester Deansgate and Altrincham do not have is good, and saves you walking around the store for example to see what the restaurant/cafe inside actually serve, and it also helps you find what you want in the store too. A slight struggle in deciding an overall rating as I could argue for either a two or three star rating, albeit the three star rating in this case would be slighlt generous, albeit it is quite a maverick move to actually include a HOF in the mall, I feel this unique and interesting twist gives this branch an edge to just step over the mark and deserve a three star rating.

There are lots of clothing concessions like Barbour, French Connection, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and more. The perfume department unfortunately doesn't have an end to it so if you hate being sprayed by the assistants, I advise you to enter through the upper mall or the car park and avoid the lower mall entrance at all costs. There is a pleasant looking restaurant on the first floor called Café Botanico which I will have to check out the next time I come down to Gateshead. Although it looked like the café didn't have their own toilets, so be prepared to walk to the other side of the store if you have to answer a call of nature. The stuff on the menu looks like traditional café fare like paninis, sandwiches and coffee. If you sit by the window, you get the view of angry drivers honking their horns at some of the lunatic drivers who come to the Metrocentre. I actually think this is quite amusing to look at because you will be relaxed in the centre and they will be stuck in their cars with rising anxiety levels and in the middle of bumper-to-bumper traffic jams. I do prefer Jenners and Frasers but this store isn't really that bad. It has just reopened after a facelift which has seen it gain lots more concessions and the aforementioned Café Botanico. All of the flooring has been replaced with birch planks instead of the old laminate. I also like the nice skylight that brings sun onto you when you go up the escalator.
