So I got excited when I saw an ECCO store in Southampton (being new to the area) and decided to walk in and check it out this past week. My review is for the shop itself, not the products. The staff are knowledgeable and they do stock some great ECCO shoes. But being limited to only what is on the shelves (and not what they could potentially have in the back room) was a bit shocking. And the amount of product was also rather disappointing. The shop is tiny, I will admit, but the layout was rather lacklustre and therefore the potential of the various types of shoes that ECCO provides were not on sale or available in this shop. When I have walked into an ECCO shop (and I have done it in London, Toronto, Vilnius) before, the selection was better, with a better layout and I wasn't limited to the product on the shelves only. Sales assistant telling me that they only have a certain shoe in in the shoes available on the shelves smacks of either laziness (cos they don't want to to go the back) or the shop itself is badly managed if they cannot even bother keep stock on hand. My next ECCO shop will not be in Southampton. I will probably make the journey into London. Atleast there I can get a choice of selection.

The store is at the Bargate on the corner and runs as a V shaped down one street and into the Bargate area proper. The assistant in the store was fantastic. She showed me a large range of shoes, explained the benefits of the Ecco shoe and recommended a few pairs. She brought out all the shoes for me to try on and I finally picked one pair to buy. She wasn't at all pushy and was friendly and helpful. They stock a large selection of what I would call comfy shoes, not up to date fashion but really well made comfortable shoes. She did mention that nurses were particularly keen on one or two pairs as they are on their feet all day. Without a doubt I would return if I needed another pair of these type of shoes instead of the torture devices I usually wear!

Pavers Outlet is rather extraordinary - I got some desiner trainers for £14, but casual slingbacks cost me £34. Mind you most of the footwear is Italian, even in the Outlet. In the other half of the store, are brands which are far more expensive. My friend and I examined an exquiste stiletto in a neutal colour with embroiderie, around £120. 'Great for a wedding!' I decided. 'Or just round the house' said my friend. 'Yes, with nothing else on' I concurred. Really besides real elagance like that, you get The Really Useful Shoe, The Flatty, Trouser Shoes, and all points in between those. Some of their mules are great, flattering and summery. There is every type of shoe Under The Sun. Oh, but the boots! Now, I do have a boot fetish and I get most of my boots here. Usually I wait for the sale and get two pairs maybe. The staff are good fun, enjoy my visits with a certain friend, and are helpful to boot!!! Oh, the good ones are the best!

The location consists of multiple stories, with each section having a dedicated clearance section. All prices are clearly marked, and include taxes (which somewhat compensated for the prices being in pounds). My wife got a good deal for a blouse (5 quid), that she wore multiple times on our cruise. Going on a multi-day cruise with just carry-on luggage (allowing us to be nimble as we explore), means only light weight clothing that is easy to handwash/air dry. TK Maxx (just like its sibling Marshalls/TJMaxx in the States) is great place to pick up heavily discounted clothes that fit that bill. It's also fun to see what fashion and brands a foreign country is selling...in this case, it was similar to what we are able to find in the States (along with similar prices). It was a self checkout and we had no issues using our US bank issued card. Learning: TJK changed the name to TK Maxx to avoid confusion with a British retailed called T.J. Hughes.

You do have to pay to park in West Quay and it can be expensive so do check the charges as it's a pay on exit car park

We decided to try but it soon became clear that was our mistake. They weren't that tasty. The food seemed air fryer cooked, dry, near tasteless and not a good eat really, so real fish & chip shops have no fear of this competition. This is food passable for old folks homes. We didn't have to wait long for the food but here again the server had no tartare sauce to offer (apparently a supply issue) but it was readily available in store just a mere few feet away. £18 for rubbish food. The tomato ketchup, vinegar pouches and salt were seemingly rationed. I asked for some more and some more was handed over, piecemeal. I gave up. Is it a lack of training? Who knows. Then I tried to open the sauce pouches and ended up asking a staff bloke to do it. He struggled but succeeded. I am really annoyed as this is not acceptable.
