I was very skeptical going in to my first mindfulness class. I wasn't really sure what it was going to entail and I'm not a big fan of taking my shoes off, sitting in a circle and pretending to be interested in other people's problems, their search for spirituality or their bad poetry.
What I learnt in my eight-week course is that mindfulness is about understanding perspective, that it takes a lot of hard work to learn the skills needed to keep it going, and that there is a lot of value to understanding or knowing oneself better.
It is not an overly spiritual experience and is based very much in the goal of just being able to deal better with the world around us.
The cost is very reasonable, the support materials are excellent and the classes are really well structured.
