We had two kitchenette bar stools and four ding room chairs reupholstered. The original (now 12 years old) bar stools had very little seat padding and their backs were just steel bars. Not comfy. CJs installed more seat padding covered with our choice of material from their expansive selection. For the seat back, they had to design and make a padded back. This is superior craftsmanship. The dining room chairs were not as much of a challenge, but I might note, when I was thinking about doing this, I saw that there were 18 screws holding each seat pad on -- with three different sizes of screws and heads - Phillips, hex, and bolt. Yikes! I kick myself for not taking before pix, you'll just have to appreciate the after pix. It has been a long time since I've seen quality craftsmanship. This is the best I've seen for upholstery-- ever! Price: Another reviewer who gave them a poor review, but did not use their services, said they were too expensive. I would answer that my six items are now far better than they were when I bought them new. I thought the price was more than reasonable considering the quality of the result! So, looking to refresh or replace some chairs? You can price new chairs (though matching wood for a dining room set could be a problem), but I doubt the quality would be better than what we bought new. We started with email and photos and they were very responsive and asked good questions that helped us understand what we needed to take care of. We are delighted with the work provided by CJ's. We took a while to figure out fabric and got great service looking at their samples. We ultimately bought fabric elsewhere because we couldn't find what we wanted. They did beautiful work, were very thoughtful about fabric orientation (horizontal patterns) and where they were placed. The work was completed earlier than estimated. Joe just left the house having delivered two reupholstered couches that were inherited, they're 60+ years old. Joe and his team did awesome work. Both couches are stunning, and even more important for me they are over the top comfortable. I can't recommend CJ's enough. And, Joe ... I can't thank you enough. Thanks. As to other peoples' comments here about timing/time? These guys (CJ's) work incredibly hard. This is a very busy, thin profit margin world. We all work our tails off. CJ's is no different. They could easily have charged 50% to 75% more and I still would be getting a screaming good deal for the quality I received. And, if they did charge everyone higher pricing, they'd have more time. But then, I wouldn't be able to afford it. I just got the highest quality end product, at a very low price. So, if my getting superb work at low cost means waiting a little longer? I'll wait. And, as soon as I can afford to get our sleeper reupholstered, and my desk refinished.... I'll be calling CJ's again. For sure. Good people. Update August 18th - After 6 days of new couches, I just realized. I have no back pain, no neck pain!! Awesome. When I first met Joe we were talking about our lower back pain, when Joe says, "I'll make this just like I would for my own back. You're going to love this." And Joe was right. I'm lovin' this. No back pain, no neck pain. I spent a fortune on orthopedic doctors, x-rays, MRIs, physical therapy, traction, chiropractic adjustments, etc. Literally, the last option was to get the vertebrae in my neck fused! But, apparently, its just been the couches I've been sitting on this whole time! So, kid you not. If you've had chronic back and neck pain, and pain is even radiating down your arms like mine was? And, you've got an old couch or chair you sit in for long periods like I had? You might want to consider getting your chair/couch reupholstered. It may or may not work for you, but it's worked for me big time. And, I do actually have medical issues with compressed vertebrae and bulging discs. But now, having a properly upholstered couch, with retied springs and the right cushioning my body is in a better posture making the pain go away. I should have done this years ago, it would have saved me a lot of money! read more

He gave me an estimate over the phone and came and took the seat cushions off the chairs in my home so that the chairs themselves didn't need to be transported. I picked fabric that they had in the shop and this is the least expensive way to go. There is a fair selection of fabrics in stock and I was fortunate to find something among them that was just what I wanted. I'm looking to reupholster a vintage couch and loveseat I've inherited from my parents. I was intrigued by CJs and called to get more of an idea of possible pricing, etc. Over the phone I simply told the owner what the couches looked like and he gave me a blind estimate. I was a little surprised that dimensions weren't a factor, but was interested to have him come by my house to look at the couches hoping to gather more information. When he came by, it was nice that he brought some fabrics for use to look at. However, he wasn't interested in seeing the couch, seemed inconvenienced (kept looking at his watch), and quite frankly didn't seem interested to be making a house visit. He gave a rundown of how their shop works with old couches (i.e. tightening the couch to improve the integrity, etc.) which was great to hear since I know these couches have been through 30-40 years of use! When he spoke about cushions and refilling those I asked if it was possible to keep the same fillers since what we love about both couches is how comfortable they are. He said no, that they would be putting in their own fillers and such. Honestly, I felt like as a customer I wasn't being listened to. Considering these are pieces with meaning, I expected more understanding and accomodation of what our preferences were. Needless to say, with a bad vibe I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I called 3 other upholstery companies in the albuquerque area and they all told me that I would need to reupholster the entire couch because they would have a hard time finding the exact leather. When I asked Joe if he could find the exact leather he replied "no problem". He said it would take a few days for Ups to get it here and another few days for his staff to reupholster the couch. We recently had CJ's upholster a chair and we were very impressed with the quality of their work and their outstanding customer service. We went back to the store today to buy a remnant of the material used on the chair in order to recover a foot stool and had an entirely different experience. First, the kind lady (owner?) that we worked with the first time was not there. The woman that was there was sullen and acted like we'd interrupted her, however there was no one else in the store and she was not on the phone. She flat out said they do not sell fabric. After we persisted with our request, she went to the back to talk to the upholsterer (also owner?). And said they would sell one yard at $40. When I asked if we had to buy a whole yard, since we only needed a 1/2 yard,, she had to go ask again. Finally the upholsterer came out and accused us of wanting the fabric for free! He then said we were yelling at the woman, and we were being mean! We were just asking questions! Frankly, he was so angry it was scary! I'm still shocked at his response! Needless to say, we won't go back there. We'd already recommended this place to a friend who needs lots of items reupholstered, but have already told him about this terrible experience. read more

I chose CJ's for my chair cushion repair because of the good reviews it had on Yelp and Angie's List. I was surprised that the estimated amount of time for what I figured was a fairly easy repair was two weeks but I figured a good job takes time and they had other work to do. After two weeks came and went, I called to find out if it was ready. The owner answered the phone and told me that they hadn't even started working on it yet. I asked why it wasn't ready in the estimated time and he became quite rude and indignant with me. I don't remember what all was said but I did remind him that I'm a paying customer and would be taking my future business elsewhere. He said he wished I would. The cushion was done less than 2 days later. When I picked it up I was surprised to see the poor quality work. It is about the quality I could have done myself, not the professional job I expected for $180. If you want work done that's worth what you're paying, I recommend going someplace else. read more
