When we started building a raised garden bed we got a little ahead of ourselves and ended up doubling the size from our original plan. This was all going great until we got it built and realized just how much soil it was going to take to fill it in! A neighbor recommended we get the dirt by the truck load from CJ Mulch versus bagged at a garden center. We are so glad we took this advice! Luckily we have a pickup truck so transporting it was no problem, but they do offer delivery and will even spread mulch around your yard, too! When we left to get the dirt we actually debated whether we would need to take shovel to help load it ourselves, but thankfully the guys over at the mulch yard were well equipped and made loading a breeze. Whew - I wish we could have unloaded it as quickly and smoothly as they filled us up! We pulled into the lot and almost immediately the man operating a front end loader (? or some big ole piece of machinery) stopped what he was doing to roll on over to us and ask how he could help. The lot was full of huge mounds of various types of mulch, dirt, etc. He had us back our truck up to a pile and then he scooped up a bucket full and positioned beside the truck. Seeing that big machine with 1,000+ pounds of dirt was pretty intimidating (looked like it could have crushed our vehicle) but the operator was extremely careful, slow moving, and just started slightly tipping the bucket so that the soil could spill little by little versus him having just dumped the whole thing all at once. The soil/dirt we got was very good quality. It obviously isn't screened and fertilized/mixed like bagged potting soil, but overall it's good dirt. We ended up with 3 truckloads and took it out of the truck by the shovel full. Although there were a few hunks of clay and some very small pieces of mulch/wood, we did not see a single rock which was a pleasant surprise! read more

Great service and quick delivery. But don't expect wood you can burn right away. We got our wood and it was obvious that while trees were cut a year+ ago, splitting was very recent and logs were nowhere near dry enough. We now have a stack of wood that will sit idle for a year before it's ready for action. If you want to order wood from CJ, better do it a year before you want to burn it. read more

FIREWOOD RIPOFF!! You would not buy "SOME" gas for a specified amount of money correct? You buy gallons. You would raise heck if you found out you drove 1 mile down the street to save 5 cents per gallon only to find out that a gallon was actually slightly less than a gallon. Well CJ mulch and more is doing exactly that. The only reason they get away with it is because they advertise firewood in loosely quantifiable units - "bucket loads".  Would you buy a bucketload of gas for your car? would you buy fuel by the tank load? NO! Because it would depend on what size tank you have.  Selling firewood is a great way to take advantage of people who do not know any better. There are many ways to take advantage - they all stem from offering wood at a price per quantity that is impossible to compare or verify. For example: by the truck load, by weight, or by bucket load. What size truck is it dumping the wood? well this would be the difference between a fair price and getting ripped off. Weight? Well how much water is in the wood? Also who has a scale handy that can weigh 1000s of lbs of wood. Bucket load? Well thats like saying yes I will give you 43 dollars if you put a bunch of gasoline in my tank - Useless. The standard of measurement for wood is the "CORD". A "CORD" always measures 4' wide by 4' high x 8' long after split and stacked. a typical price in Vermont for example for a cord of wood might be $180-$190 (Note: Vermont is a very expensive state to live in. Minimum wage is 9.17 per hour in VT. South Carolina is only $7.25 Consequently wood should be cheaper in South Carolina.) If the Cord of wood is not 4' wide than it should be two 2' wide logs stacked next to each other or the pile should be 16' long or 8' high or any combination to add up to the same volume. I called and asked what the price was per Cord and obviously they started talking about buckets. I asked what the conversion from buckets to cords was - I was told about 3 buckets per half cord. I paid $90 for half a cord or half of 4'x4'x8' which is 48"x48"x96" or 221,184 cubic inches /2 = 110,592 cubic inches of wood. After I stacked wood it was 63,360 cubic inches or about .286 of a cord vs .5 Also while I stacked the wood myself so this is not an issue, one should be aware of anyone who stacks wood in a criss-cross pattern it consumes a lot of volume and makes the wood appear to be more than it is.  Note: Don't be fooled by a little cardboard sign at the side of the road with the words "firewood" and a phone number as if to suggest that the wood was actually being sold by a homeowner with no overhead. That little sign is CJ mulch and more. Its a shame because I actually did not know this was the company until it was too late - unfortunately for the company, I actually need mulch more than firewood; needless to say I will take my business elseware. Check the product before you load it up. I paid extra for the screened topsoil. They must have screened it with a chain linked fence. I had to screen it myself once I got home. About one third if the load was rocks. Found out later that a neighbor had the same issue. read more
