Best of all, this is a big fundraising race for all sorts of non-profits benefitting children in our community, including Ainsley's Angels and March of Dimes. Fraziers' Homestead is a wonderful spot! We went during December, and honestly, the cold weather made it perfect (otherwise I'd be profusely sweating while riding). Our guide was friendly and constantly checked in on us and our horses to make sure we were getting the most from our trail ride. We even saw the owner and shared a good laugh about the "intricacies" of staying on top of the horse. The trail was pretty with bushes and trees filling the space and even a portion where we saw the rest of their horses- I miss it! My only critique would be that the trail ride, for me, was not as long as I would have liked. To be fair, though, I could ride alllll day. This place is great because once you're finished with your trail, you get to go back to their arena and practice riding and/or trotting some more. If you're curious about $$$, I would have no problem paying again. It was 3 of us, and I want to say it was about ~$67/person not including tip. I definitely hope to go back soon and who knows- maybe even get the same horse :).

I've played many courses designed by the same designer in Alabama so I had a feeling the course would be a challenging but fair. The club house was nothing spectacular in fact very basic but the course was in good shape and the greens rolled nicely but didn't have much undulation. The course went under renovation in 2006 and several million dollars were spend upgrading the course. There's 15 lakes on the course and is just under 7000 yards from the back tees. I found my golf day at Santa Maria to be good and the pace of play was around 4 hours which is fast for a Sunday and the course was in good shape. If I was visiting the area again I would definitely play this course again or recommend it to anybody else.

Great park! There…read moreisn't much real "hiking" in Louisiana, but Port Hudson State Park gets pretty close to it, and it doubles as a Civil War commemorative site/museum :-). Came here on a Sunday in January, right after it had poured down rain the day before. It was $4 per person to get in (and $4 total in my case bc I came by myself) and was pretty easy to find, as it was right off state highway 61, which itself is easily accessible via I-10/I-110, and everything was super clearly marked. There were a few different areas you could park after paying at the entrance. I parked by the museum and started my trek through the woods there. The network of trails was super easy to find and follow. There were signs with maps posted at all the major trail intersections, and the trails themselves were pretty wide gravel paths, all of them pretty clear. In some places all of the tree roots were painted red so you wouldn't trip over them :-). What I loved, too, was that throughout the trails there were little informational signs pointing out different kinds of trees and natural landmarks, AND there were historical signs explaining what went down in the specific area during the Civil War. I wasn't too interested in stopping and reading, but I did here and there, and they were pretty interesting! Plus, it was kind of cool and exciting hiking from historical site to historical site. I was a little worried about having to wade through water, since like I said, it had rained the day prior, but luckily, the paths were mostly clear of puddles, except for in one or two places. I'll be back for more exploring!

It is also significant because it was the first place where African American military units fought under the Union Army. There are walking trails, picnic tables, restrooms, and an information center. Very interesting and well maintained. I look forward to coming back when not as many people are here.
