People who live here are active in the community, more so than other Eastside places I've lived like Newcastle, Eastgate, and Juanita. Certainly they are friendlier to their neighbors, which is great. Woodinville's terrain is varied with the valley at one end and the big hill up north. It's still home to many farmers, though that is changing along with the rest of the Eastside as housing pressure grows. The City's administrative staff is friendly, competent, and helpful. We're getting our money's worth, I'd say, as things run well and everything is well-maintained.

I guess I was a bit too young to understand and know about the popular bands in the 60's & 70's, but I have heard this name - "Jimi Hendrix" many times, and especially about his performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969. As I got older, luckily there's YouTube, and it's just like I was able to go back in time as I got to watch, and see Jimi Hendrix in action. The Jimi Hendrix memorial features an array of murals & his quotes, as well as a Fender Stratocaster guitar which was his preferred guitar of choice. Gone too soon at a young age of 27, he will be forever remembered by his rare musical talent, and he was one of the greatest guitarist in the 20th century.

People were still sleeping or just waking up. I wanted to reminisce. Contemplate. Recharge. Dream. Find inspiration. It always works when I'm here. ----- Cookie cutter mixed-use developments have taken over Broadway. They lack character and personality. I love old buildings, Beaux-Arts style buildings. Sign up for a Seattle Architecture Foundation tour if you're interested in Craftsman, Queen Anne, and Tudor homes. They're hiding around the residential areas. Old money. Capitol Hill is a historically LGBTQ+ neighborhood. You'll see rainbow-painted sidewalks. Flags on windows and walls. Pride festivals are held here in the summer. Nightlife is quite the experience. "When I was 21, it was a very good year." ;) Makeup on. Nails done. High heels. Looking cute. Dancing, laughing, drinking, staying up late. How did I get home? We have Elliott Bay Bookstore Co., my favorite bookstore. The first Starbucks Reserve Roastery is here. I forget which street they're on--Shall we play the Pike or Pine game? :p I'd rather go to a local mom-and-pop coffee shop though. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. Seattle Central College students must be fed. Dick's and Tacos Chukis are my cheap eats. M2M and QFC are grocery stores off Broadway. Trader Joe's and Safeway are further out. Cal Anderson Park. The Waterworks fountain is here as well as a baseball field, a tennis court, and a basketball court. The Capitol Hill Farmers Market pops up just north of the park on Denny Way. Volunteer Park. It has the conservatory, an amphitheater, the Seattle Asian Art Museum, Isamu Noguchi's "Black Sun", The Water Tower, and a reservoir (love those sunsets). The park was named in commemoration of the volunteer soldiers of the Spanish-American War. Not sure if a name change is in the works but a controversial plaque was quietly removed in 2021. Lake View Cemetery is north of Volunteer Park. Pay your respects to Bruce and Brandon Lee. Kikisoblu (Princess Angeline), daughter of Chief Sealth, is here. John Nordstrom (Flagship store is off Pine between 5th & 6th. I love Nordy's!). Madame Lou Graham (Take Bill Speidel's Underground Tour if you want to learn more about her). The Denny Party. Doc Maynard. Thomas Mercer. Henry Yesler. Carson Boren. Do these names sound familiar to you? Yep, street names in Seattle. Transportation options include the Sound Transit light rail, the First Hill Streetcar, and Metro buses. I don't recommend driving here unless you absolutely have to. This is a high density area and not vehicle-friendly. You'll spend much of your time driving in circles trying to find a parking spot and when you do, you'll have to pay a pretty penny. I keep my head on a swivel. Earbuds out. On Capitol Hill you're dealing with bikes, scooters, vehicles, uneven sidewalks, buses, garbage, ambulance, construction, street cars, delivery trucks, escalators, stairs, dog poop. I've been yelled at, unprovoked, by druggies and homeless people so many times I can't even keep count. It's an unfortunate reality but I won't stop going to Capitol Hill though. The good outweighs the bad.

Once the fair was over, popularity of this site overall dwindled. However, like all good things, this had a refresh. They did a rebuild in 95 where they made the fountain more user friendly and interactive. It was meant to be that way from the get go, but how it was initially designed did not really look like that. They took out the protruding nozzles and the rocks to make it look like the moon so that people could touch and play with it. Fitting, as this did replace a playground. I happened upon the place early morning and found it already had a multitude of people around it. Enjoying the weather. I took my pictures, which really did not do this justice. The fountain really wasn't magical at that point of the day.

A ferry terminal, with service to Seattle's Colman Dock, boards at the east end of Winslow Way. You can also find a number of public parks around the island. The last time I visited, we brought my friend's dog with us and he LOVED being able to check out all the forest-y areas. Many shops are also dog friendly. Very charming... love Bainbridge Island.

I spent over four years living in the east bay of the San Francisco Bay Area looking at the Golden Gate Bridge on a daily basis and still the West Seattle Bridge pulls out as my favorite. Even when its pillars are vandalized with spray paint the elegance of the structure shines brightest. Clean and marred, the bridge is beautiful in many ways. Before moving back to the greater Seattle area I would talk to my parents about the cracking in the bridge. As I was in school researching fracture/failure of materials at the time, this development provided a beacon drawing me home. Happy to be back and to get to see the West Seattle Bridge while repairs are being made to strengthen it. Cracks and repairs, especially the putty/epoxy applied for reinforcement, are easily visible from the West Seattle Bridge Trail that runs on the Spokane Street Bridge. Perfect bridge to take in the beauty of bridge architecture and engineering in general.

The Spokane Street Bridge runs over Harbor Island and the Duwamish River/Waterway roughly parallel…read moreto the West Seattle Bridge. These two bridges are separate bridges, with the Spokane Street Bridge being the shorter of the two and the West Seattle Bridge being the taller of the two. Some bridges are stacked bridges meaning they have multiple decks/layers (typically two in my experience) for vehicles to traverse, one upper deck and one lower deck. The Spokane Street Bridge and West Seattle Bridge are not the stacked type of bridge instead they are distinct bridges running alongside each other. Southwest Spokane Street runs across the Spokane Street Bridge and is a fun driving experience especially at night. There are stoplights at each end of the bridge, something to keep in mind if you like to speed as traffic can get a bit backed up at these lights. Walking the bridge is also a fun adventure especially now that the West Seattle Bridge is temporarily closed for repairs. The platforms being utilized by workers to aid in making repairs to the West Seattle Bridge are easily visible from the walking/biking trail, the West Seattle Bridge Trail, on the Spokane Street Bridge. If you come during the day when repairs are a work in progress it is possible to see the workers and equipment being actively used occasionally. Stairways on both sides of the Duwamish River take one down to the ground below. I explored the stairway down from the bridge on the west side of Harbor Island and found a sidewalk that I used to reach Terminal 18 Park. Clean and well maintained bridge in my experience with some lovely views of the Port of Seattle and the West Seattle Bridge.
