The main thing I wanted to see on our Seattle trip was Jimi Hendrix gravesite and memorial. This goes back to my love of jimi and his music. A master of his craft, gone too soon........... When I told my friend I wanted to visit Bruce Lee, my friend - Cory Y, also told me about the Jimi Hendrix Memorial. I guess I was a bit too young to understand and know about the popular bands in the 60's & 70's, but I have heard this name - "Jimi Hendrix" many times, and especially about his performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969. As I got older, luckily there's YouTube, and it's just like I was able to go back in time as I got to watch, and see Jimi Hendrix in action. Along with the Jimi Hendrix Park and the Jimi Hendrix Statue, there is a Jimi Hendrix Memorial which is also the resting place of the famous legend. Unlike the first two which are located in Seattle, this memorial is further away in Renton. The memorial is in the Greenwood Memorial Park Funeral Home and is right in front when you enter from Monroe Avenue. The memorial consists of etched portraits of Hendrix as well as quotes from some of his songs. In the center is a guitar tombstone that takes center stage. There is no dedicated parking in the area but you can temporarily park in the surrounding area of the gazebo while you check it out. It does affect cars coming through so you should not park there for too long. This was a very peaceful place and a great memorial. read more

Absolute must-visit for any musicians in the Seattle area. Memorial is well kept and honors the legacy of the late Jimi Hendrix appropriately with quotes, pictures, and a statue of one of Hendrix's Fender Stratocasters. A few people were confused on the final burial place of Jimi Hendrix, and I would like to confirm that it is in fact this location in Renton where he is buried and NOT the statue in downtown Seattle. I had no idea that this was truly where this musical legend was laid to rest. We were visiting my daughters in Seattle and looking for something to do for a few hours with them. I looked on Yelp to see attractions that were close to us and I found Jimi Hendrix Memorial. We figured we'd go check it out. I love to photograph old headstones and just cemeteries in general, so it sounded like it was right up my alley anyway. The memorial did not disappoint!! It was touching, yet sophisticated. We were the only people there, which was amazing!! I loved learning the history of iconic man and how much his family cared for him, even after his death. Back in the day there was nothing......I repeat, NOTHING better than smoking some "good stuff", laying down and throwing on the headphones and listening to Jimi Hendrix. It took you to a different world. Words cant even describe how good it sounded. Nowadays even without the "good stuff", Jimi Hendrix music is still the best! I decided to take a drive out to his memorial today. I arrived and nobody else was there. I snapped a few pictures and sat there in awe with Hendrix playing in my mind. It was a great time. The memorial is really impressive. Its huge! It also has lyrics to Angel, Voodoo Child and Little Wing on the columns of the memorial. Its surrounded by purple flowers. I'm glad I got to see it. Excuse me while I kiss the sky! The new James Marshall Hendrix memorial is spectacular. The Hendrix family really went all out to upgrade Jimi's final resting spot. I applaud them for not only giving Jimi & The Hendrix Family a beautiful viewing place location, but the Hendrix family also gave the fans who pay homage to Jimi an area they can spend some time, light a candle or even play a tune should they bring an instrument. Jimi's new grave site also allows people interact with Jimi and not to trample on other people's graves as in the past. I'd say this is the best musicians gravesite I've paid my respects to. So her Dad brought her here on a Saturday and she loved it. Ironically, I went to court across the street on Monday and decided to stop by. Other reviewers have covered the particulars of the memorial and included some pretty terrific photos, so I don't want to duplicate that. I would just say I really loved Jimi Hendrix's music and learned a lot about his life by reading a biography written by Charles R Cross called Room Full of Mirrors. So visiting Jimi's gravesite and memorial while in Seattle was mandatory. It's in an otherwise non-descript cemetery a pretty good distance SE of Seattle. The bus ride took 45 minutes and a transfer. The memorial is in the southwest section of the cemetery and is visible from the funeral home parking lot, so you can't really miss it. The Fender Stratocaster that's the central focus of the memorial is trademark Hendrix. People have stuck guitar picks in it and other personal items around it, and when I went it had a purple bandanna tied to the neck. It made it seem more alive and personal. Each of the walls has engraved pictures as well as a few of his song lyrics. The sides of the memorial have the burial plots of Hendrix (you would expect, anyway) and several family members. There are empty plots that one would think will be for other family members, those who are still alive. It was all a pretty cool experience. If you go to Seattle, make sure you visit, even if you have to travel by, uh, dragonfly. read more

Opened in 2003, the Jimi Hendrix Memorial was a project spearheaded by his father Al. Originally buried in a normal grave at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Al wanted to create a monument worthy of his son's musical legacy. Unfortunately Al didn't get to see the completed project--he died two months before it's opening. On each of the walls of the memorial, there are etchings of Jimi's likeness along with lyrics from his most famous songs. The center of the monument was supposed to house a statue of the guitar god, but it has never made it to the spot--if it even exists. Much of the Hendrix estate has been contested among the family members and many suggest the statue remained in limbo as a result of that family discord. Seattle has some amazing pop culture history, which you can check out a lot of at MOPOP but this is a little more somber. Jimi's memorial and grave are exceptionally well done in a clean well kept cemetery. Some people leave tokens of remembrance and appreciation at the site. I loved the etchings on the memorial. I didn't think I'd ever write a review of a grave on Yelp, but this is no ordinary grave - it's a monument to the late, great Jimi Hendrix. It is truly beautiful - a stone gazebo etched with portraits of Hendrix, lyrics in his handwriting, and at the center a magnificent sculpture of one of his guitars. Yes, it's in a cemetery (and it is in fact the grave of Hendrix and various members of his family), but we played Purple Haze and had a nice chat with other visitors while visiting. Some of those before us had left their respects in the form of lipstick prints on Jimi's face ("Scuse me, while I kiss this guy"). One of the greatest if not the greatest guitarists of all time is laid to rest here. Even though Jimi was a humble guy, this memorial is well deserved. Located at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery in Renton, you cannot miss the 3 granite pillars that support the large granite dome. Let's talk a little history here. When Jimi died on Sep 18, 1970 in London, England, his father James "Al" Hendrix made sure his body was flown back to Seattle where he had a plot ready for him at Greenwood Memorial. Despite barely having the funds to do all this, Al made it possible for this to happen. This is where his vision of a beautiful memorial was to be built which would include other Hendrix family. At the time all Al could afford was a simple headstone for Jimi. In 1995 after a 2 1/2 year legal battle, Al regained the rights to Jimi's music. As a result, it came with financial security so Al fulfilled his vision of a great memorial for his son and other family members. Construction began in 1999 and was slated to be finished in June of 2002. Unfortunately, in late 2001 Al's health gradually deteriorated and sadly he passed away in April of 2002 just months before the construction was to be completed. His family vowed to finish the memorial and to keep it highly maintained. What you see now today would not be possible without the vision and commitment of Jimi's father and surviving family. It is an awesome sight to see. If you have young kids, please make sure to remind them where they are and to show respect by not playing around the memorial or any where in the cemetery for that matter. As for Jimi's musical legacy, his music will be forever be remembered as one of the pioneering leaders in the early electric guitar era. So whether you are a fan or not, there's no denying that this memorial is an awesome sight to see. There's no other way to describe it but as "The Jimi Hendrix Experience". Pun intended. This is such a first class exhibit/memorial. And the grounds are so well maintained. I am embarrassed to admit that as many times that I have visited the Seattle area in the last decade or so that I not only hadn't visited here, but didn't even realize that it existed. Pretty freakin lame on my part. Everything about it helps one develop a tangible picture of whom Jimi Hendrix was as a performer and musician and what he did for and meant to the world of rock n roll music in the late 60's. The freaking Jimi Hendrix Memorial, Rock's eternal guitar god, only has 3 reviews? Say it ain't so, Joe; there you go again! If this project was funded by deep pockets, it would be much more of a tourist attraction (the website says that 14k visit the memorial each year). Instead, it was funded by the Hendrix family, who were entrenched in legal battles for ages, and most likely didn't get what they were asking for. Upon reading the info on the site, it indicates a granite full-sized sculpture was being produced in Italy-in 2004-well, I've been a couple of times, and there is no statue to be witnessed.....the money must have run out. Yes, this memorial is very weird; it doesn't have much rhyme or reason to it-you would never know this is where jimi hendrix and family are buried.....and it's in Renton because that's where Hendrix grew up, morons! read more

I have been meaning to go to the Jimi Hendrix Memorial for quite sometime but in my mind I thought the location of it was in some isolated neighborhood in Northern Seattle. Well, I was wrong. It was much closer than I thought and Renton is just a hop, skip and a jump for me in Tacoma, providing traffic is not at a standstill. This shrine is a beautiful tribute to the legendary rock star and the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery is a very pretty place for where the memorial is. I'm sure there are always a small trickle of people coming around and in the memorial's gazebo like the cold, wintry day I went and possibly even crowded during the summer but the day I picked was just perfect! The pillars which show etchings of Jimi are wonderful and his fan's small little tributes are also quite touching. If you love your rock and roll and like to pay respects to the Gods of Rock and Roll this is a must stop. There is also a Jimi Hendrix statue in Capitol Hill in Seattle but this is the actual memorial. read more

I have to admit I can't sing complete lyrics to a Jimi song and despite owning a greatest hits CD for at least a decade, it remains unopened. That is the impact that Jimi has had on music. My guess is some people walk, hitchhike, ride the bus, drive cross country, even fly across international line just to visit this place and here were are with it in our own backyard. It stands out & isn't hard to locate but the easiest way to find it is to take the 2nd driveway off of Monroe south of NE 4th St. If you do it correctly, the memorial should be directly in front of you. FYI, there are also plans to build a park & memorial to Jimi in a field next to the NW African American Museum on S. Massachusetts St in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle. The museum is small but currently has an interesting exhibit re James Baldwin while living in Turkey on display, including a short documentary film in wc he speaks about his life in Turkey, his writing, homosexuality & other issues. read more
