"Man does not live by Costco alone." So, when I go skiing in the Vail/Beaver Creek area, I also need the mundane everyday groceries over and above the big box buys in wine and the bigger items. Up till now, I've been begrudgingly going to the big W, which served that purpose. But when I discovered City Market right in Avon, it was a Eureka moment. Don't belly-ache about prices anywhere within 100 miles of here - groceries are gonna COST when you go schussing. Being owned by Kroger, though, City Market achieves a degree of affordability and reason, which is why they are so busy. Interestingly, their busiest hour is about 30 minutes after the ski lifts close at 4:00 - MAN, the lines can get long then. The rest of the day, they're a picture of tranquility. Their produce is nicely displayed and very fresh. As with everything else, you have to be smart. I almost grabbed a bunch of celery when I noticed it was not $1.39 (VERY good price, I thought) - it was $1.39 a POUND! I then noticed come loose stalks, fresh and nicely trimmed, ALSO at $1.39 a pound. Which one do you think I went for, when I can get just enough for my needs, no worries about those nasty leaves and everything (which, BTW, are both edible and nutritious, just so that you know, in case you didn't...) Most of their good discounts are reserved for card members - so, I grabbed one, until I realized, I didn't need to! My Kroger card/alternative ID will do just fine. Staff are mostly helpful and friendly. Pleasant place to shop. read more
