The cost now from PEI to Nova Scotia is $79 for the car and our three passengers. We enjoyed a cooked breakfast on board, plenty of hot coffee and some terrific sightseeing on the deck. We had booked our itinerary online before we left and so when we arrived, the operators quickly located our reservation and ushered us into the appropriate queue. Boarding was orderly and organized and the ship left promptly. The rest of the 75 minute trip was very pleasant. The weather was beautiful and the deck allowed for a lovely panoramic view of the Northumberland Strait. We saw small fishing boats pass by, with friendly fishermen waving lobsters at us. The concession stand sold tea and coffee, ice cream and snacks while the cafeteria served hot sandwiches and breakfast. They even had poutine, which was still deliciously unhealthy even if it featured pale (rather than the typical dark) gravy used in Québec. The 'green' side of me loved that disposal of waste was separated into compostable, recyclable, and then finally trash bins. Overall a great experience; although it was pricier (~$70) than driving to PEI on the Confederation Bridge (~$40), it saved us time rather than having to reroute our itinerary and was a more enjoyable experience sailing across the Strait.

The Tir na nOg Inn. Oh boy! Short version: unfriendly, bad…read moredecor, out-of-date, bad food, bad company, not a patron-pleasing place at all! DO NOT GO HERE. My boyfriend and I were on our 3rd day of biking across the confederation trail that runs the length of the province. We made reservations at the Inn the morning we had planned to bike into town. Upon arrival a note was left on the door for us indicating the owners had left for the evening and a key had been left on the desk inside the foyer with further directions. The note inside asked us to specify when we would like to be served in the morning and what we wanted for breakfast and to leave the note on the antique phone by the office. This proved to be no easy task as no one left us any paper or pen to write such a note. Nor did we know where the office was in this big dark house. I ended up finding the office and breaking in to the place to get a piece of paper and a pen so I could let them know when we expected to eat breakfast and what we would like. After finding our room and settling in we took showers in what seemed to be the oldest and most dysfunctional shower heads you could think of. The water ran from hot to cold and the head sprayed every which way while whistling a loud high pitch. The bathrobes were old and had obviously been in use since the place opened. We took the rest of the night easy and spent a cozy night in bed watching old VHS movies as the place didn't have a DVD player or cable. Seriously out of date. It was only as we were finishing up our film that the owner comes home and knocks on our door at 11PM. Shocked, I answered the door and we had a short discussion about breakfast in the morning. I told him we eat our eggs hard-boiled and do not eat white bread or sugar. We were expecting to do a lot of physical activity and bike all day so we needed a nutritious breakfast and an early start, The note we wrote earlier had said 7AM to 8AM, but when the owner knocked on the door, he said he couldn't do breakfast any earlier than 830AM, but everything else should be fine. We accepted and went to bed. In the morning, we arrived at the breakfast table at 830AM prompt with our bags packed and ready to go. We were given a small cup of fruit, white bread cranberry muffins (no white bread please), pancakes with chocolate chips (no white bread please, no sugar please), fake maple syrup (no sugar please), and expired yogurt cups made with refined sugars (no sugar please). The food was terrible, and the nutritious value of the breakfast was horrific. Not only did we get what we had asked not to have, but we didn't get what we asked to have either. The owner sat at the table the whole time with us and complained about the restaurant business he's running in the next town over. How hard it is to find good employees and to satisfy the taste buds of islanders. He talked himself up claiming he knew good food and that the people of this town had no refinement when it came to that so he had to sacrifice his ideas of high-scale dining for local preferences. Boohoo. He kept talking that we had to make a run for it when he stopped to take a breath. We wanted to get on the road and it was approaching 930. By the time we got out we were close to and hour and a half past our expected go time.

Personable and generous hosts. Excellent location, right on the Confederation Trail, and in walking distance of the town centre. Drawbacks are minor. Showers are a bit small and would benefit from a shower head update. The Inn has a truly excellent collection of movies available to guests, but not all the rooms have players. This is a family-run business, and everyone was super pleasant. I tried the lobster sandwich with a lime-mayo, very tasty. The peach lady cocktail was excellent. The portions are not too big, which is great as the quality is very high. Everyone was very pleasant and the Inn is lovely to stroll through. I was looking forward to taking my parents here for their anniversary dinner. Alas, I think we hit it on a bad night for the kitchen. We made reservations for 6:00. When we arrived there were a few people on the outdoor patio and a table of 8 to 10 in the back "porch" who were waiting on dessert. Not sure how many people were in other areas. There was a table of two came in shortly after we arrived. Our server was very cheerful but seemed harried. There were long gaps between seating, getting menus, ordering drinks, ordering food and most especially receiving food. When we inquired about the wait we were told the kitchen was backed up and second basket of rolls was offered. My husband and I shared a caesar salad to start, it was smaller than I expected and was okay, nothing special. And then the wait for entrees. Inquired again and told our dinners were being plated, another 5 - 10 minutes pass. My husband and I receive our meals but no sign of my parent's meals. Another 5 - 10 minutes and my parents receive their meals. We were later told their meals were late because they had to switch the potato sides. I had the coconut curried chicken. It was tasty but the rice seemed like regular long grain white rice, not the green jasmine rice listed on the menu. My husband had the ginger beef and thought it quite tasty. Dad had the pan fried oysters and mom the almond crusted chiken. Both were good but they obviously didn't arrive fresh off the stove. Our server did check in on us while eating our entrees and after. After, I said the meals were good, once they arrived. She asked if they could compensate us, maybe dessert? No, we didn't want dessert. Nothing else was offered as compensation so that was it. We paid and left. After so looking forward to the meal, it was a big disappointment. I can appreciate that any kitchen can have an off night, I just wish it hadn't been this night.

One is dorm-style and two are regular bathrooms, one reserved just for women. Fantastic--spacious and private! There's also a loft with private rooms. Outside is a detached garage with a pool table, a record collection, guitars for the musically inclined, and a beer fridge. That's where the cool people hang out. Also, you can rent bicycles at the hostel, and it's just a short ride to the Confederation Trail. The staff was really friendly--it was so nice to be recognized and greeted every time I walked in the door. It felt like a close-knit family environment, and I really enjoyed the evenings spent in the common room, playing games or watching TV with the other travellers. (Levi is the owner. He's super nice and quite charming, and he runs a great hostel. Don't ask him about the War of 1812 unless you want a skewed history lesson in American-Canadian relations.) I don't know if I'll ever make it back to PEI, but I would definitely stay here again. If all hostels were like this one, I would never stay in a hotel again.
