But let's get down to what's important. The cut. The fade. The attention to detail. I can happily report all of the above are excellent. A common misconception of other so called barbers is that short hair is short to cut. Of course the reality is the opposite. If a haircut is less than 30mins then something is missing. My cut at Capello's was about 45 and was fantastic. It's a first come first served situation and there didn't appear to be any sinks for hair washes but they use the Turkish choaker method which lets minimal hair down the collar. Also I'd have to say there was very little residual hair anywhere when I left. Of course everyone is different and has their preferences but as someone that gets their hair cut every 3-4 weeks - all over the western world - I have to say this place is one of the best I've been to.

Judging by the 'old school' look of the place, that bares a striking resemblance to another barbers, (albeit fictional), of a similar name... well... I'm sure you know what I mean...! Stamy Todds is a traditional barbers shop in every sense of the word. It's got those old style chairs that I wish women's salons had... they're the type that recline and also allow the barber to hoist them aloft, by pumping away at a foot peddle... I think they must be hydraulic...? Anyway, they're ace! I've sat in quite a few of them when I used to go to the barbers in India. Yep, you heard me right... I used to go to the barbers! But there's method in my madness... All the women in India have long hair and so you are always incredibly hard pressed to find a hairdressers as they just don't need them! So it was a case of a barbers or nowt! Everything about Stamy Todds hearkens back to a bygone era... and that includes the pricing. You'll have change from a tenner no matter what you go in here for... and you'll come out smelling of pomade! Oh joy!

However, its exterior design doesn't really sell it very well, and I only know of guys rather than girls who have had their hair cut here. The shop front and signage looks quite dated, and doesn't have that 'open' and airy feel of most modern salons. On the other hand, if you're given a seat right at the front of the shop at least you won't have passers by gawping in at you when you're in that unattractive, towel-up, pre-cut state! Prices are lower than you'd pay at most city centre salons, and the blokes I know who have had their hair cut here have been happy with the service.

Since, like some sort of modern-day goldilocks I have tried several different salons based in Cardiff. Yet none quite come close to La Zarou Bros. The same salon my Mum has been visiting for over 20 years - it's where you'll find me EVERY Thursday after work. They have a few salons in the city centre yet my favourite is in Churchill Way. It's somewhat like those American style barber shops - but the female version. The staff aren't just friends they're family. They know you by name and remember conversations they've had with you from months ago. No typical 'off on holiday' or 'we're having nice weather' talks will take place here. What's more despite having long hair I'm not having to worry that my card will decline at the point of payment. My blow-wave (wash, blow-dry into loose curls) costs less than £20 and it's a given that I leave every week feeling as though I should whip my hair back and forth - or at least whisper "because I'm worth it". Note: All the staff here are super talented and most have 'done' my hair at least once yet my all time favourite person here is Alex - not only do I trust him with my daily drama and gossip but I also let him near me with scissors!

Lazarou was recommended to me by a friend as being both good and cheap. When I went there I found that I wasn't awkward. This is worthy of note because I am ALWAYS awkward in hairdressers. Spending that much time talking to someone that I don't know about things that I'm pretty sure they don't care about?... But I found my hairdresser (who also washed my hair) to be very friendly. Whilst he was actually cutting my hair, he asked me what I was doing that weekend. Replying that I was going to the cinema, but didn't knwo what I was going to see, the hairdresser next to me joined in the conversation. To my great enjoyment, the entire hairdressing salon was then involved in the same conversation about what I should go to see.

Then he left shortly after, and i found another I liked, who also left shortly after. Once the shop moved across the road, it has all seemed to down hill. I find the "put your name on the list and wait an hour in the shop" ridiculous. Ive popped in, put my name on the list, said i'll be back in 10 mins, (even though the estimated wait is 30mins-1hour) and the answer is no. When asked why, because "thats just how we do things". The last time i went there, I sat waiting for 1 hour, and 2 barbers both disappeared for lunch while i was sat there, leaving one guy slowly working, with 2 other equally frustrated customers who had been there longer than me. Poor customer service! No communication at all. On top of that, the last 2-3 times ive had the same grumpy, can't-be-bothered, too cool for school guy with no people-skills cut my hair, do a middle of the road job, and walked out £18 poorer for the experience. This place seems to be caught up in the new world of tattooed "cool" barbers, perhaps believing their own hype a little too much without actually providing quality in terms of customer service or work. Perhaps I've just been unlucky the last few times, but every time i leave i feel annoyed with the experience. I'll be looking for alternative places from now on.

Do NOT come here if you're a woman looking to get your hair done, all the barbers are male and they probably have no clue how to do women's hair. ~ Customer Service: Really good and why it gets 5 stars! They were very courteous and shook my partner's hand as he went in. The guys have a "grungy hipster" vibe to them, but they definitely know their hair. My partner is one of those stereotypical men that have no clue how they want it cut so all the direction he gave was - "shorter". I've been with him to salons before where they keep pressing him for more information and he would get stressed out because he genuinely doesn't have a clue, but the guys here were very understanding and probably have experienced a lot of guys who don't know what to say! There was also free WiFi for me as I was waiting! ~ Results: The results were great! My partner's hair looks fantastic and they were definitely thorough with their work. He's very happy with his cut and we ended up leaving a tip for the experience. £18 for a full dry cut isn't too bad at all given the quality. It's refreshing when a stylist listens when you make a request, but has enough knowledge to talk you out of a bad decision (like when I wanted fringe and Martin promptly, but politely, explained that it would be very hard work with both natural curls and a cowlick). I can't comment on the beauty treatments offered, but as it's right around the corner from my flat and the prices are competitive, I'm definitely booking my next one here!
