I didn't feel like I was speeding but sure enough there was a lady police officer standing in the street and flagged me over, pulled me into the Remax real estate office parking lot. I felt sick as I remember belatedly, that the speed limit was 25mph!!..which had surprised me one day when I noticed how low it was...ANYHOW. This lady police officer, I think her name was Rodriguez...stood on the passenger side of my truck and I gently reached for my registration/insurance above my sun visor and then looked at her and said "I am getting my drivers license out of my left front pocket"..and she thought I said "I was HOT"..which meant I had a gun....instead of getting ALL EXCITED..like some cops on YouTube, she calmly said "if you are carrying its no BIG DEAL, I would just ask you to stand out of the car"..just like that...no PANIC...." Imagine that..? And she took my license calmly as Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, said politely "give me a moment please" and went into her cruiser...checked me out. Reminded me that the speed fine for 36 mph in a 25mph was $200 some odd Bucks!!! Wished me well,....smiled broadly and pulled the next guy over....she let me go!!! So, what is my point? WE NEED MORE police officers like this!!! Thanks so much for doing a stand up professional job, reminding me of the law, being polite and earning my RESPECT.

I don't think I can find the words to say how grateful I am that not only the kids got this opportunity, but the parents as well. I am truly amazed at this police department. How they "do it" is beyond me! Let me tell you why... Do you know the population of St. Augustine, Florida is right at 14K? WHOA! I know...right? It seems bigger than that. But you know what?...that means they have a very small police department since the population is low. Let's think about that for a minute...HELLO!...this is a tourist town!!! Doesn't it seem like you always see an officer somewhere? Next question...how many people do you think visit St. Augustine every year? Yep...I guessed a million too! But it's 7 million! Yes, 7,000,000 people! How does this police force keep up? They are humpin'..that's how! They have a very small force and it goes without saying they are understaffed. The next time you see a St. Augustine police officer take some time to thank them for all they do because it's not easy with these numbers. They are good, but numbers are thin. As for the station, it is very small. But we truly enjoyed learning about day to day operations there and learning how they juggle their schedules to make it work for the people (you and me that is). After all, someone has to always be on duty to protect and defend. We all thought it was cool to see the interrogation rooms, the evidence lockers and especially the vehicles. The bullet proof vest were a big hit too. I, and we, appreciated the educating tour of the police department by Officer Samson, the time he dedicated to us and making us feel very welcome. Thank you!

If you want the short version, go directly to the last two paragraphs…read more This review is for WEST Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies in Hudson/Port Richey and non-incorporated areas of New Port Richey. Keep in mind, "Florida Man" is a meme for a reason and the Sheriff's Department has to deal with them. Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies in our side of the county are relatively congenial. They seem to use tools to work smarter. They are very responsive in letting the community know what's going on in the county via Twitter. They are BIG proponents of Ring/other video systems and make it easy for residents to report break-ins, mischief, etc. They have a detective who reviews reported events from the Ring system so they know who's out and about and can easily disseminate the information. The Port Richey/Hudson area is not some place you want to case the neighborhood. By the time you get around to finding a place to commit a crime, they already know your body, your face, have you on video and the Ring community probably already has a thread going on you. Why did I give the Sheriff's Department 4 stars instead of 5? Sheriff Nocco said some pretty inappropriate things about Occupy protesters during that period of time (2011-2012) that inferred his deputies would abuse their privilege under *his* direction (the video of his press conference was aired on TV). Our peaceful protests (signs and verbal) only crossed their purview once and they were NOT happy, but they did not become physically abusive over it. It was peaceful after all. I am sorry I can't give you any information on how the Sheriff's Department in this area interacts with African Americans. I've never, EVER crossed the path of any African American person that was threatening in stance, so if you feel threatened you need to get your white privilege/racism in check. The area has become more evenly split between Democratic and Republican voters and COVID statistics show a much higher percentage of white people suffering from the virus so take what you will from that. I offer this next bit of information in hopes that it offers perspective on this area in regards to what the Sheriff's Department has to deal with. Both Hudson (NY connection) and Moon Lake (descendants of one family) have a cluster of white supremacists. You will, from time to time (although less frequently over the last year) see them driving down US 19 with confederate flags as big as their raised up trucks flying from them. The ones from Moon Lake are more "Florida Man." Keep your distance from the Hudson group (no idea where they hang, but the Sheriff's office is aware of them from what I was told so they have to deal with that). We have several clusters of homeless groups. They pretty much stay to themselves, but the Sheriff's Department keeps an eye on them as well. This place is full of retirement communities which means a lot of old people who spend their days/nights looking out the window. Like I said earlier, this area isn't a good place to commit a crime if you're trying to get away with it. The Ring community is vast and wide and very adept at quickly spreading information about where you've been and where you're going. Drive VERY carefully if you're going down SR 52 in the dead of night. Drunk people wander across it from time to time, usually in dark clothes so be awake and alert if you're out driving then. Jasmine Road is another place where people for some unknown reason walk along the road in dark clothes (more than once I've come across someone pushing a stroller) so keep your eyes peeled as there are no sidewalks for anyone to walk on safely. Bottom line, the Sheriff's Department Deputies in West Pasco County generally try to be professional and congenial. They are well trained and equipped to deal with escalation though. Treat them as you'd like to be treated so you don't have to find out what those escalation tactics are. The State police are a completely different kettle of fish so make sure you've got a camera running at all times tucked away in a corner of the car, ESPECIALLY if you're traveling down I-95 and look like you're vacationing. Google for more info.
