Citgo sign is so iconic! If you see it in a movie, it reveals that the story is set in Boston! I wanted to see it during my trip! Pretty easy since we were going to Kenmore Square anyways to see where my husband used to live in college! So there it is, it is lit up at night, without the craziness of Times Square. Close to Fenway as well. It's the logo of an old oil company that has been there since the '40-s. They have changed to this new one to light up in 1965! It's neat to see it from various others areas, from the T train or the Esplanade! I am happy I got to see it, surely didn't disappoint. It's a landmark of the city and of Kenmore Square! Nothing screams more like Boston to me than the Citgo sign! read more

Just being a general sports fan and not necessarily a Boston Red Sox fan, I still thought it was pretty cool getting to see this sign every time I left the hotel. After seeing it in the background of Red Sox games at Fenway Park after all these years, it was instantly recognizable. It was installed atop a building on Beacon Street in 1940 and set up with the double-sided sign and logo that you see today in 1965. Now, I'm not sure how true this is, but I was talking to the concierge at our hotel during one short, but hellacious thunderstorm that was passing over us at the time. (I don't see that kind of weather in Vegas often, so I was eating it up!) Anyways, the concierge tells me that the sign will attract the lightning and has actually gotten zapped quite a few times! He says that makes the thunder sound a lot more dramatic. lol Again, I don't know if it's true, but he told it with that hardcore Boston accent, so if anything, it was amusing! lol 5 stars....just because I want to! read more

Anyone who has been to Fenway- or even driven near Fenway will spot the huge, quintessential Citgo Sign. So iconic it has been incorporated into fan gear for the Red Sox! A must for a quick photo op or selfie! It is a huge 60 feet by 60 feet! Originally installed in 1940, it was updated in 1965 with the new logo. The Citgo sign was shut down for several months beginning in July 2010 to replace the LEDs with a newer version hopefully more capable of withstanding the winds and temperature extremes that affect the sign. If you read my last two reviews I led you on a virtual ride along the beaches of the Oregon Coast from my 2010 summer travels. Now it is back to Boston where I will resume my reviews. If I were to drive from the Oregon Coast to Boston, I could take US 26 to I-5 into Seattle where I would catch the longest Interstate in America I-90 eastbound to Boston. Or if I preferred the Scenic way I would catch US 20 the longest road in America eastbound eastbound and arrive at its easternmost point at the Citgo sign 3,365 away from the Pacific Ocean. The Citgo sign is more than a sign, it is the sign of America that is the easternmost landmark of cross country travels across America. It is one of the last or first landmarks visible from I-90 and US 20. In spite of the fact that there is a Barnes & Noble instead of a Citgo below it, it is the sign of many Citgo signs ahead on these two cross country highways. In the summer of 2016, the Citgo sign was one of the landmarks that I saw on a walk from the Beacon Hill Wyndham to Fenway Park. From first laying eyes on it in the shadow of the Longfellow Bridge on the Boston Esplanade walking trail and last laying eyes on it in Kenmore Square a throw away from Fenway Park, I was looking at a true landmark that dates back to the 1940s. It is a landmark that has been seen on television sets from Boston to Newport, Oregon during countless Boston Red Sox games. The Citgo sign towering above the Victorian lamp post- bordered sidewalks lining Beacon Street in Boston Red Sox country was a sight that connected me to the Americana of baseball and cross country drives. It is the landmark where the automobile and baseball meet. It is as American as Apple pie that they probably serve in the B&N below. Additionally, it was an important landmark walking from Beacon Hill to Fenway Park. From the Charles River across from the MIT skyline, the Citgo sign was the beacon leading us to the stadium. When we arrived at the Citgo sign we were a pitch distance from Fenway Park. Kenmore Square is the perfect ending for US 20. However there is no perfect ending for the Citgo sign. I hope that the Citgo sign lights up the Fenway Park outfield and easternmost point of two of the longest roads for decades to come. read more

Even though I never lived in Boston itself (I live in a suburb) and have never gone to a Red Sox game (too expensive for a student's budget) I consider Boston my home... I go into the city quite often, and love it!! That said, there is perhaps one of the most Boston things there is, well, next to The Green Monstah itself. Sure, you have the universities, the hospitals, and skyscrapers... but, again, this one does not entertain, teach, or heal people... it just stands there, watching carefully over the city so many call home (even if they are from a suburb) Some will say it's misleading, others say it is just an advertisement... yeah... maybe they're right... that doesn't take away from the awesomeness! Finally, I really like that the lighting of the sign is dynamic rather than constant. Meaning that when you are looking at that area of the Boston skyline that has the Citgo sign in view, it is always changing as the illumination on the sign progresses through its cycles. read more

My appreciation of the Citgo Sign began two decades ago, with my first stay in the Boston area, at the Hyatt in Cambridge. My room had an unobstructed view of it, and I'd watch it at night to get an idea of what was going on at Fenway - and this was before I was a Sox fan. My personal favorite moment was being at Fenway the night the sign was turned back on after the bulbs were "CFL'ized," and I had an unobstructed view from my seat. Boston has had a love/hate relationship with the CITGO sign since it showed up in 1965. It replaced a 1940s Cities Service sign that sat atop the building occupied by a company with the same name (CITGO being a division of that company). Today it's iconic. When I first moved to Boston (around the Jurassic era) I didn't quite understand it's appeal. But like singing "Sweet Caroline" in the 7th inning, you come to appreciate these nuances that make Boston great. The city wouldn't be the same without it's bright neon facade. I didn't grow up watching much baseball, let alone the Red Sox since I grew up with the Yankees and the Mets. So my exposure to Kenmore was limited. Prior to my move up here in 2003 I had no idea what about the Citgo sign. When my dad and I were running errands for some apartment stuff I told him he should get gas up ahead since he was getting low. It was then when I schooled on the Citgo Sign and how there is no mega gas station beneath those bright lights. Since then I've grown to love the Citco Sign. I love the skyline with it. The illumination in the sky. How it's big news when lights are out or when they have been replaced. Which at this point have been often. It's rather sad to see half the lights out when the blimp over Fenway is capturing its patterned illumination. I'm hoping that there will be a point when they can have the lights working properly without taking away the character of the sign. With the Coke bottle gone from Fenway now, the Citgo Sign is even more important in context to Boston, Kenmore Square, and the Red Sox. read more
