Worth a see. The Citgo sign is a Boston landmark. Yep yep. I drive the area all the time, twice daily heading into Cambridge. Great area, the BU and Fenway Park, and certainly a lot to do. Been goin there since The Rat, Charlie's and the old record buy-sell-swap store were there. BU Bookstore is rock solid. Fun area for sure. Gimme back 1990. read more

The CITGO Sign sits above Kenmore Square in Boston and has been part of the city's skyline long enough that it has crossed from commercial signage into something closer to a civic landmark. We approached from the bridge and looked out toward the upper decks of Fenway Park, and the sign simply became part of the visual geography of that part of the city in a way that few pieces of advertising ever manage. The sign is a large triangular structure with an illuminated CITGO logo that cycles through colors at night. Seeing it after dark is considerably more impressive than during the day. The nighttime version, with the lights shifting against the surrounding urban skyline, is what earns the sign its reputation as a photograph worth taking rather than just a thing we pass on the way to the ballpark. The connection to Fenway Park and Red Sox baseball is part of what has embedded the sign in the local consciousness. It is visible from the outfield seats and certain sections of the park, and when the Red Sox hit a home run the sign has historically lit up in response. That gives it a participatory function within the game experience rather than just a passive presence on the skyline. For a piece of Boston iconography that costs nothing to see and requires no planning, the CITGO Sign is a quiet landmark that rewards a moment of attention, especially after dark when the city lights come alive. It is not a destination on its own, but it is a meaningful part of the Kenmore Square experience and worth a glance whenever you are in the area. read more

Citgo sign is so iconic! If you see it in a movie, it reveals that the story is set in Boston! I wanted to see it during my trip! Pretty easy since we were going to Kenmore Square anyways to see where my husband used to live in college! So there it is, it is lit up at night, without the craziness of Times Square. Close to Fenway as well. It's the logo of an old oil company that has been there since the '40-s. They have changed to this new one to light up in 1965! It's neat to see it from various others areas, from the T train or the Esplanade! I am happy I got to see it, surely didn't disappoint. It's a landmark of the city and of Kenmore Square! Nothing screams more like Boston to me than the Citgo sign! read more

Just being a general sports fan and not necessarily a Boston Red Sox fan, I still thought it was pretty cool getting to see this sign every time I left the hotel. After seeing it in the background of Red Sox games at Fenway Park after all these years, it was instantly recognizable. It was installed atop a building on Beacon Street in 1940 and set up with the double-sided sign and logo that you see today in 1965. Now, I'm not sure how true this is, but I was talking to the concierge at our hotel during one short, but hellacious thunderstorm that was passing over us at the time. (I don't see that kind of weather in Vegas often, so I was eating it up!) Anyways, the concierge tells me that the sign will attract the lightning and has actually gotten zapped quite a few times! He says that makes the thunder sound a lot more dramatic. lol Again, I don't know if it's true, but he told it with that hardcore Boston accent, so if anything, it was amusing! lol 5 stars....just because I want to! read more

Anyone who has been to Fenway- or even driven near Fenway will spot the huge, quintessential Citgo Sign. So iconic it has been incorporated into fan gear for the Red Sox! A must for a quick photo op or selfie! It is a huge 60 feet by 60 feet! Originally installed in 1940, it was updated in 1965 with the new logo. The Citgo sign was shut down for several months beginning in July 2010 to replace the LEDs with a newer version hopefully more capable of withstanding the winds and temperature extremes that affect the sign. Earlier versions featured neon lighting; the pre-2005 sign contained 5,878 glass tubes with a total length of more than 5 miles! The sign is a historical landmark. read more

If it were a restroom sign, it'd be the Sh*tgo Sign. Sadly, it's not, and there's no restroom under this sign. Unless you just, like, go in the street. Which is fine with me. I mean Boston wants to rival NY, so why not rival NY in terms of the streets smelling of pee. The iconic legendary Citgo sign is one of the main highlights of the Fenway district of Boston - especially if you're a sports fan and have seen it in the background every time you've ever watched the Red Sox on TV. Who are actually about to win the World Series as I speak. Literally. I wrote this review as they won the World Series. Good times. read more

Happy memories from many years ago when I went to college here in Boston. You can see the sign from much of the city and it's a helpful landmark. It is as much a part of Boston as the Pru. I'm back now in Boston and it's wonderful to see that sign. It's brilliant, it's bright and it's a lit sign. It's lovely! read more

AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! A FREE EVENT & IF YOU COME HERE ON SUNDAYS THERE IS FREE PARKING AT THE METERS! One of the most important landmarks that is instantly recognizable to people from all over the country & the world when they think of Boston is The Citgo Sign. It is a Gigantic double faced sign that features The Citgo Gas Company's Logo. It overlooks Kenmore Square in Boston. It was made famous by all its appearances in the background of Boston Red Sox baseball games at Fenway Park which is right across the street. When a Home Run is hit from The Green Monster - Fenway Park people say " See It Go"! It is Beautiful both Day & Night & part of the Boston Skyline. However it really illuminates the feel & vibe of the city when it lights up at night. The way the white horizontal lines graduate & then the red triangle appears & disappears is very Cool to watch! It is a 60 foot square white sign with the Red Citgo Oil Company logo, called a trimark & the word CITGO in blue letters below it. Yes the Sign is all Red, White & Blue - The Colors of America. The sign was installed in 1940 & has become a hugely popular roadside attraction. It was updated with Citgo's current logo in 1965. The sign was originally done in beautiful neon. There was a fire & because of costs & the extreme weather conditions of the 4 seasons, temperatures & wind LEDs were selected to replace the neon. Before 2005. the Citgo neon sign contained 5,878 glass tubes which is more than a whopping 5 miles long in length. Although it's still a Beautiful Sign, some people have complained that the LED's really lack the character, charm, feeling & vitality of the original neon sign. But it's Still Cool! If you are in Boston this is a Must See on your Bucket List. Batman has his Bat Signal & Boston has its Red, White & Blue Citgo Sign that beams out a beacon of light in the night skies. It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget! read more

Boston's Iconic landmark in the Fenway district. Literally "The Batman Signal" for the Fenway Park & the Boston Red Sox. I always use the Citgo Sign as my beacon to how close I am to the ballpark when heading to a game or The House of Blues which is near. The Commonwealth should declare this a landmark cause when I think Boston this image aways comes to mind. My only wish is to stand on top of the sign and scream " Top of The World Ma".... read more

Just off of Kenmore Square, there's this little gas station. Well no! There isn't a real gas station here. There's just a sign. Look up and you'll see it. It's on top of an old building on Beacon Street. AND... it's not just "a" sign... IT's THE CITGO sign... as every true Red Sox fan knows! If you watch the Red Sox on NESN, you know about these things. It's just over the Green Monster in left center field. And now, you can get seats on the green monster! What is the world coming to. I would have given it Five Stars, but I don't like the politics of CITGO. LOL!! read more

I don't get it. A Citgo Sign? Didn't the dictator Hugo Chavez have a lot to do with this company? According to the internets, "Citgo is owned by Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., (PDVSA), the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela." As far as I could tell, there isn't anywhere to gas up here. I'm from Texas, where we're into things being big, and oil. You'd think that this would be at home in Downtown Dallas, or Houston, but I'm surprised to find it here in Boston of all places. I guess I'm just wondering, "Why?" read more

If you read my last two reviews I led you on a virtual ride along the beaches of the Oregon Coast from my 2010 summer travels. Now it is back to Boston where I will resume my reviews. If I were to drive from the Oregon Coast to Boston, I could take US 26 to I-5 into Seattle where I would catch the longest Interstate in America I-90 eastbound to Boston. Or if I preferred the Scenic way I would catch US 20 the longest road in America eastbound eastbound and arrive at its easternmost point at the Citgo sign 3,365 away from the Pacific Ocean. The Citgo sign is more than a sign, it is the sign of America that is the easternmost landmark of cross country travels across America. It is one of the last or first landmarks visible from I-90 and US 20. In spite of the fact that there is a Barnes & Noble instead of a Citgo below it, it is the sign of many Citgo signs ahead on these two cross country highways. In the summer of 2016, the Citgo sign was one of the landmarks that I saw on a walk from the Beacon Hill Wyndham to Fenway Park. From first laying eyes on it in the shadow of the Longfellow Bridge on the Boston Esplanade walking trail and last laying eyes on it in Kenmore Square a throw away from Fenway Park, I was looking at a true landmark that dates back to the 1940s. It is a landmark that has been seen on television sets from Boston to Newport, Oregon during countless Boston Red Sox games. The people love this famous triangle on the double faced sign that is 60 feet by 60 feet. The people love this famous triangle sign that dates back to 1965 and further to the 1940s under a different logo before I-90 was a conception. When the sign was under threat to be taken down under the guise of so-called redevelopment the people took action and collectively signed 5,000 signatures demanding it stay up there. The result was preliminary landmark status. On my walk to Fenway Park and views of the Citgo sign, you can count the hand writing this review to be the 5,001st signature. The Citgo sign towering above the Victorian lamp post- bordered sidewalks lining Beacon Street in Boston Red Sox country was a sight that connected me to the Americana of baseball and cross country drives. It is the landmark where the automobile and baseball meet. It is as American as Apple pie that they probably serve in the B&N below. Additionally, it was an important landmark walking from Beacon Hill to Fenway Park. From the Charles River across from the MIT skyline, the Citgo sign was the beacon leading us to the stadium. When we arrived at the Citgo sign we were a pitch distance from Fenway Park. Kenmore Square is the perfect ending for US 20. However there is no perfect ending for the Citgo sign. I hope that the Citgo sign lights up the Fenway Park outfield and easternmost point of two of the longest roads for decades to come. read more

Even though I never lived in Boston itself (I live in a suburb) and have never gone to a Red Sox game (too expensive for a student's budget) I consider Boston my home... I go into the city quite often, and love it!! That said, there is perhaps one of the most Boston things there is, well, next to The Green Monstah itself. Sure, you have the universities, the hospitals, and skyscrapers... but, again, this one does not entertain, teach, or heal people... it just stands there, watching carefully over the city so many call home (even if they are from a suburb) Some will say it's misleading, others say it is just an advertisement... yeah... maybe they're right... that doesn't take away from the awesomeness! Finally, I really like that the lighting of the sign is dynamic rather than constant. Meaning that when you are looking at that area of the Boston skyline that has the Citgo sign in view, it is always changing as the illumination on the sign progresses through its cycles. read more

My appreciation of the Citgo Sign began two decades ago, with my first stay in the Boston area, at the Hyatt in Cambridge. My room had an unobstructed view of it, and I'd watch it at night to get an idea of what was going on at Fenway - and this was before I was a Sox fan. My personal favorite moment was being at Fenway the night the sign was turned back on after the bulbs were "CFL'ized," and I had an unobstructed view from my seat. There should have been more ooh's and aah's as it once again lit up the sky - I did my part. read more

Just got revamped with LED lights.. no more missing red and white spots on the sign. If you're ever lost.. look to the sky and go towards the Citgo sign. Well, it'll just take you to Fenway. Right on. The Citgo sign gets 5 stars for making my life so much easier since I'm bad with directions. Can you drive me back to school? Do you know how to get there? See the Citgo sign? Boston has had a love/hate relationship with the CITGO sign since it showed up in 1965. It replaced a 1940s Cities Service sign that sat atop the building occupied by a company with the same name (CITGO being a division of that company). Today it's iconic. When I first moved to Boston (around the Jurassic era) I didn't quite understand it's appeal. But like singing "Sweet Caroline" in the 7th inning, you come to appreciate these nuances that make Boston great. The city wouldn't be the same without it's bright neon facade. This is not just any sign. The Citgo Sign. - Ye who brightens up Fenway Park with your luminescent red triangle. - Ye who sits above the BU Barnes and Noble and helps the Green Monster devour opposing hitters. - Ye who makes the occasional city councilor upset because they realize that your parent company is run by a mildly insane crazy Venezuelan man. If your in the Kenmore area or especially when your at the game in Fenway - the iconic Citgo Sign is a constant presence - it says your "home" to me. As much as it is "iconic" to Boston - it really is just a Gas/Oil sign in reality - but it's OUR sign. read more

Boston isn't Boston without the Citgo sign. It's sort of like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, you see it at almost every point in the city. I felt a little bit sad when the sign was being fixed and could not be lit up. It was like a part of Boston was gone, broken, dark. I think people lost their way between Boston and Cambridge, not knowing which direction was Boston. I bet Fenway lost business, too, because people couldn't find it. It's THAT important. Whilst living in California for a few years for work, I was always greeted happily by the Citgo sign on my trips back home, reminding me of what an amazing city Boston really is. I didn't grow up watching much baseball, let alone the Red Sox since I grew up with the Yankees and the Mets. So my exposure to Kenmore was limited. Prior to my move up here in 2003 I had no idea what about the Citgo sign. When my dad and I were running errands for some apartment stuff I told him he should get gas up ahead since he was getting low. It was then when I schooled on the Citgo Sign and how there is no mega gas station beneath those bright lights. Since then I've grown to love the Citco Sign. I love the skyline with it. The illumination in the sky. How it's big news when lights are out or when they have been replaced. Which at this point have been often. It's rather sad to see half the lights out when the blimp over Fenway is capturing its patterned illumination. I'm hoping that there will be a point when they can have the lights working properly without taking away the character of the sign. With the Coke bottle gone from Fenway now, the Citgo Sign is even more important in context to Boston, Kenmore Square, and the Red Sox. read more
