Looks can be deceiving…read more Not much to look at on the outside. Valero Gas Station in a rather nod-descript building. I've known about this place for sometime now and even posted an exterior shot from when I was driving around looking for another place with a footnote to come back some time. Don't know what I was expecting but I walked into a very nice convenience store and it the back, a very nice Cafe, tastefully decorated and a full kitchen that could serve a much larger space. Not an expansive menu but from what i could tell, the emphasis was on quality and not the number of menu items offered. You walk in and follow the signs to the counter and after reviewing the menu, you place your order and then you pay. If you are dining in, you come back and grab a table till your number is called. If it's take out, you come back and pick it up. Looked over the lunch menu and a couple of things looked good. Breakfast menu looked very good as well. The lady at the counter asked me about todays special which was a Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich with Honey Mustard which sounded good. For a side, I had the potato salad. Place my order, paid and in short order my number was called and I picked it up at the Counter. Looked good and when I bit it, it was as good as it looked. Steak was nicely cooked and while I was a bit leary of the Honey Mustard, it turned out to be a nice compliment. The Potato Salad was excellent with a bit of a tang from the mustard used in it but not overpowering with a nice taste and texture. A bit hidden and not well marked on I-77 but it's the at the Tomlin Mill Exit North of Statesville on the west side of the interchange. Worth giving in a try.

This store arrived in front of me at the right time. Inside, quite crowded with drinks and snacks. Nothing fresh or particularly healthy but that was okay. It's actually a review of Barkers Log Cabin Grill which is in Barkers Log Cabin Grocery. About half way between Statesville and Harmony on US Hwy 21, it's also the home to a Valero Gas Station. It's out in the country and not unusual for farmers to shop up on their John Deere to get gas and grab a quick bite. Looking at the menu, they have a very extensive breakfast menu that looked very good. Folks were very friendly and helpful to someone who did not know their system. You walk up to the counter and place your order, then you take your ticket to the front of the store and pay and then you find a seat and they bring your meal to you. Not sure they take plastic because I paid in cash but from the sign, I know they don't take debit cards. Restaurant is clean and neat and when I was there, the sign says the health dept gave them a very good 97 rating. From the lunch menu, i decided on a Double Cheeseburger with Fries. Came our in about 10 minutes and talk about piping hot. The Double Cheeseburger was enormous and they were very generous with the onions I requested. Very good burger. Fries on the other hand, were good but could have used a little extra time in the fryer. Definitely not uptown but it's like the small town diners I grew up with and I felt welcome. Charles Kuralt would have liked this place.

My husband and I came back by around lunch with the truck to pick up my new yard sale finds, and I just had to stop and try the food. Everyone here was absolutely friendly and inviting. I'm telling you, back of a gas station food is either a huge success or a big failure. This one was AMAZING! I had the grilled cheese (my go to item to find out if I will like anything else) and fries. So hot and so melty and ooey and gooey! My husband had tenders and fries with BBQ sauce with the perfect amount of tang. I saw them making a cheese steak and hamburger too, which I may need to come and get tomorrow! They have dinner plate specials running and I hear the wings are on point! Because of the atmosphere and the friendliness of the hardworking employees, I plan to eat here during workdays when school starts! Oh! If there is homemade pie, GET SOME! Trust me!!

I pumped my gas, then headed over to get a car wash. The young guy explained the various full service options and helped me to select the best one. He even explained the point system to receive free washes with their loyalty program. In the past I've had anxiety about going through the car wash because my wiper blades almost got ripped off. The owner Steve walked up and said on the Lexus you just hold up the gear and it keeps the mist wiper sensor off. He was very confident and convincing. Now I was comfortable proceeding through. I could tell this was some high-tech cleaning machines like no other I had been to. Once the wash was over I proceeded to the full service drying station. The guys vacuumed and cleaned my car like a professional detailing company! I was beyond pleased. I've never received this service at any other car wash! They even asked me to look it over and if anything needed more attention. Wow! All that for only $26! I waited in their comfortable waiting area. Which had tvs and lounge chairs. Not your typical waiting area. I decided to go inside the market and check it out. This was not your average gas station. When I tell you this was the cleanest store I've ever seen. They sold everything from clothing to wine! I took advantage and did a little shopping while there and purchased some soft served ice yogurt with toppings. Y'all it was too good and inexpensive.
