Founded by Albert Maysles, the late extraordinary filmmaker (e.g., Grey Gardens, Gimme Shelter, Salemen, Iris, films of Christo and Jeane-Claude's art projects) the Center is a rare gem uptown providing both a great venue to see an incredible selection of films uptown and resources for underrepresented voices. First, Maysles Cinema's eclectic film calendar includes U.S. and international documentaries and select narratives, recent and from the last century, that sharply contrast with mainstream fare and provide thought-provoking Points of View. You'll also find there screenings for different film festivals. As matter of fact, I just watched a fantastic doc part of the ReelAbilities Film Festival. If you're a cinephile or just interested in a change of pace, Maysles Cinema is worth checking out and, if you don't live in the neighborhood, making the trip uptown! Second, Maysles Documentary Center presently organizes several free programs that provide training, resources, and experience to teen and young adult aspiring filmmakers. What an amazing mission! Kudos, MDC!

Hubby and I drove up to Mamaroneck Village recently for raw bar. We used to come to the area a lot…read moreof the when we had Cablevision. I only bring that up because having the "Triple Play" allowed us to get discounted movie tickets and one of the participating movie theaters was a small Clearview Cinema, located in Mamaroneck. The village, itself, is a cute little area. I like to park mid-way of the main street because I enjoy walking past the little shops that dot the sidewalks. Most of these places are small businesses and I love that about these Westchester villages that seem to thrive when everywhere else, conglomerates are taking over the world. Aside from the movie theater, we would visit a lot of the restaurants nearby. There's more of a variety than one might think, being that the village is located a considerable distance from the city. There is a plethora of cuisines to choose from, whether you're craving French, Italian, Mexican or Japanese. Unfortunately, the cinema has since closed down and we switched cable providers so, we hadn't been back in a while. When we came back recently so I could gorge myself in everything raw bar, I was reminded of the days we would spend in the area. We've always had good experiences at the restaurants, Le Provencal being one of my favourites; an intimate bi-level French restaurant with very good food and a notable wine list. A new fave is Northeast Oyster Company; newly opened, serving some of the freshest raw bar I've ever had the pleasure of slurping. Rani Mahal for Indian will not disappoint. The weather is warmer and I will make a better effort to visit the areas of Westchester that have come to warm my heart. Hi. I'm a l'il sappy from time to time. Wink.

This comedy show was a live taping, so I understand not being able to have fans or portable AC available because its too loud and hen doing a live recording, but do something. The comedian even commented about how hot is was. I'm so thankful this was in the evening after the sun went down so it was cooler outside, but if this was the summer, it would probably be unbearable. It's something to consider.

This house is so synonymous with Pelham Gardens and Christmas in the Bronx that it wholly deserves the attention it gets. It's hard to describe exactly what The Christmas House represents; it's kind of all over the place. Part of it is meant to be a "red carpet" with mannequins portraying celebrities. There are also some Disney animatronics thrown in there, Santa and his reindeer, a few religious statues, and a recreated nativity scene which sits high on what used to be an elevated porch. All the while, (mostly non-holiday) music is blasting. Yes, it's tacky, over-the-top, and not 100% true to what the holidays really mean, but you have to respect the Garabedians for the work they put into it. They literally transformed the entire exterior of their house for this (during the off-season you can see remnants of the display). I can't even imagine all the mechanical details that go into it, and I heard that they design and sew all of the dresses for the mannequins themselves. People come from all over to see the house - Mariah Carey even shot parts of her music video for All I Want for Christmas in front of it. They usually will start up right after Thanksgiving and go until little Christmas the first week in January. It's definitely worth a trip to Pelham Gardens to check out.
