History
Established in 2001.
Cinema Gallery occupies the former lobbies of the historic Princess Theater in downtown Urbana, IL. It showcases work by local and regional artists including current and retired faculty from the University of Ilinois, Parkland College, Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, Fontbonne University, and St. Louis Community College. Owners Carolyn and Norman Baxley are passionate about art and historic preservation and wanted to showcase the best artwork of the area in a landmark downtown building.
Meet the Business Owner: Carolyn B.
Carolyn grew up in Mississippi, got her BA in English from Millsaps College and her MA in English from the University of Illinois. She is married to filmmaker Norman Baxley and has two fine sons--Ben and Casey--who live in Chicago. Carolyn's specialties are writing and marketing, and her career has included marketing and conference administration for Research Press in Champaign, IL, teaching literature at the University of Illinois, and starting three businesses: Baxley Media Group, Lindley House Bed & Breakfast, and Cinema Gallery. She has served on many volunteer boards, including the board of 40 North 88 West--the local arts council--and the Urbana Business Association. She is an historic preservation activist, very involved in her community, and never tires of living and working in the presence of art and historic architecture.
