Cincy's is Greensboro's longest-running restaurant. It is female-owned, too! It opened back in 1986 by a Cincinnati native, Linda Schweppe, who brought her unique Chili recipe to Greensboro. After she retired, she sold her business to Bonnie and Cindy, who had worked at the restaurant. This ensured the original recipes remained in Greensboro. The restaurant moved into the current building back in 1987. It is located on February One Place, which was renamed to honor the date of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins at the nearby Woolworth lunch counter. The restaurant is a little hard to find as it isn't on Elm St, but they have signage on Elm Street to help you find it. The construction work appears to be over, at least in that area. I had been wanting to go to Cincy's for a while now, but aligning the hours I was in town to their operating hours had never worked. The stars were finally in alignment, and I got to dine there! It is kind of a hole-in-the-wall. The decor is simple with the tables and black chairs. There is a counter at the front to pick up to go orders. It is the type of place I try to find to eat. The vibe here is welcoming. I was greeted when I walked in and told I could sit where I wanted. I was given time to look over the menu. I knew I was going to get the 4-way, but I was curious what else they sold. They have burgers, sandwiches, chicken, salads, soups and dessert besides the chili. The chili can be ordered with different toppings. I did the 4-way with beans, which starts with spaghetti, then gets topped with chili and a heaping pile of shredded cheese. Onions would have made it a 5-way. It came with crackers, but I ordered the garlic rolls too, which were a hamburger bun. I didn't think that would taste good, but boy, was I wrong. It was like two slices of bread, but crispy and sturdy enough to dip or scoop up the chili. I don't think I've had chili anywhere before, so I can't compare this to the more traditional style. But I enjoyed it. The flavors were good, and the portion generous, and they don't skimp on the cheese. It is piled high. The restaurant prices are very reasonable, and the service is very friendly and hospitable. They tried many times to get me to take a to-go tea. I met Bonnie while I was there, and she made sure I got a bib, as I tend to get food all over me. She had my waitress tie it for me, which was sweet. She told me all about the restaurant's history. I think I met Cindy, too, as they made rounds to see if I was enjoying the chili. My nearly empty plate spoke for itself. It was suggested I try a brownie. It normally comes with ice cream, but I knew that would be too much, so I just did the brownie with chocolate drizzle. They didn't skimp on that either. The warm, gooey brownie was a chocolate delight. Cincy's is hospitable, affordable, and full of character. I've been in Greensboro for 14 years and did not know this place existed! I met up with a fellow yelper (my cousin lol) and we agreed to try something new. It's really not hard to find, but there is construction going on around it. It's a really chill place. It's not super big, but it's not too small either. They don't see to have that many workers, but everything was friendly! I ordered bacon cheeseburger with chips (I did think they were homemade chips, but it was just a bag of potato chips). The burger was really good though. It reminds me i of the little mom and pop style burgers. It was something about the bun that really gave it that vibe. I also ordered a cup of chili. I love the fact that I can choose if I want beans or not. It only comes with cheese and onions, sour cream is extra. The place isn't expensive at all. I would definitely go back! read more

If you've had Cincinnati style chili, this will be very familiar. They offer the same sort of options as I've had in Cincy and I got the 5 way...spaghetti with chili, onions, cheese, and beans. The chili has a hint of cinnamon and is not as wet as traditional chili. The medium size makes a good lunch and is served with a side of chili crackers...I save my until the end as I seem to finish all the noodles and have a nice serving of chili leftover that I mix with the crackers. They also have a nice selection of salads, soups, sandy and hamburgers. Also, they make everything to order and are happy to accommodate special requests. If you are downtown in Greensboro, I'd encourage you to give it a try. A longtime restaurant with very friendly people. read more

4 Strong Stars! A friend told me about Cincy's so I went a little out of my way to check it out for lunch. We arrived right at opening time. We were told to pick our spot and drink orders were taken quickly. When asked if we had tried Cincinnati and we told her no she asked if we wanted a sample. My wife wanted to try the Veggie Chili so we were brought a small bowl of 3 Way Veggie Chili and I must say that it was gooood! Made with lentils and bulgar wheat it didn't have me wanting something more like I was missing out! In the end my wife ordered the Taco Salad with Veggie Chili, I got a medium plate of regular Chili 5 Ways and we split a Veggie Dog with mustard, Veg Chili, & onions. A short time later our food arrived and we tested the dog because honestly, I was a little scared of a non meat hotdog but it was a good hotdog! My wife was thrilled with her taco salad. Tortilla chips smothered in Veg Chili, cheese, sour cream, and jalapeños was right up her alley. The only reason she didn't eat it all was because she had tried the hotdog and couldn't eat more. My Chili 5 Ways was bangin' good! Chili, a heaping pile of cheese, onions and beans piled onto a bed of spaghetti made my taste buds sing. Now, both the regular and veg chili are seasoned the same and it's like no other chili I've had. A whole new taste profile from what I'm used to. Not spicy but full of flavor. Texas Pete and Tobasco Sauce are on the tables to spice things up if you like. It was so good I sent a pic to my carnivore friend to tell him to come try this place out. okay, I have run into these places that state they are Cincy Chili, LMBO, Yeah Right! Damn! It is Cincy Chili! I could not have been more pleased, Yes there are small differences, no small hotdogs like Gold Star, Something else I can not recall right this moment was different but let me tell you something, I ordered a 3 way and it was nearly as good as Skyline. If you are from Cincy and looking for a fix, this place is for you. If you are not this place is still for you, they have other options my co-worker found something she liked. The Staff were so darn friendly. Today we were downtown on an errand, and figured it was time to stop in Cincy's for lunch. Alice went with the medium Chili 4 Ways (with beans), and I ordered 2 Hot Dogs (M,C, & O) and a side of Pasta Salad. Food was out quickly, and everything was very nice, and the chili makes it all work, on the spaghetti and on the hot dogs. The people here are friendly and efficient. Today I decided to break from my Gone Troppo (I miss you, George Harrison) tour and go temperate.  You can find Cincinnati themed food right here in Greensboro at the aptly named Cincy's. Founded in 1986 by a Cincinnati native, they are downtown Greensboro's oldest restaurant, and they make a very good lunch. I ordered a grilled ham and swiss, a hot dog all the way, a side of potato salad, and a cup of Cincinnati style chili. Ham and Swiss: this was a fine, fine sandwich. The ingredients were tasty and it was grilled to buttery, melty perfection. Potato salad: very good flavor and consistency. Rock solid in every way. Hot dog: this was just all around a very good hot dog. Nothing was standout fabulous, but everything was good--slaw, chili, wiener, everything tasted right. Chili: It was a bold move for me to order this, because I have spent the last 12 years or more disparaging Cincinnati style chili--more specifically, Skyline chili, a particular chain that makes Cincinnati style chili. I tried it in Cincinnati in 2008, HATED it, and have actively campaigned against it. But this version was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Seasoned with Mediterranean spices, it has a great taste. It is still very different from Texas style chili, but it was really good. Should I try Skyline again???? I saw it in the frozen foods at Harris Teeter... Located in downtown Greensboro amidst a serious revitalization project, Cincy's is a great place to have lunch, including take out. read more

The best little hole in the wall in downtown Greensboro. Not typically open for dinner just lunch. I found this place while roaming downtown during my jury duty. The atmosphere is like a little diner. Turquoise and white! Very colorful. Cincys is very small and not meant for super large groups. They serve the best Cincinnati style chili five way! Service is usually not a long wait. Prices are super affordable, so much so I ate here everyday for lunch during my jury duty. They offer burgers and sandwiches along with their delicious chili. Nestled on February One Place, kinda hidden from vehicle traffic, this is a gem. Sometimes less is more. This logic makes this place more. This sounds confusing but when you visit, you will see. In a nutshell, I would describe this place as Simple. Today I went with their staple; Cincy Chili. The chili is basic (i.e. the way it's suppose to be). The blend has just enough meat, beans are firm , onions are vibrant , and a good amount of cheese on top. All of this is draped on a bed of spaghetti that is slightly softer than al dente. You can accompany the chili with garlic bread (slight up charge), but I prefer the (free) oyster crackers. The table setting offers a choice of Tabasco or Hot sauce to complete the plate. This meal was hearty and satisfying for just $5 for a small portion. Larger plates are offered too. The decor is simple. The menu is simple. The pricing is simple. In a world of frills, this place is basic, or should I say simple. On my next visit, I am aiming at the ATW Hot Dogs. I am walking out very satisfied. read more

If I could take away one star for any reason, it would be the true nightmare it is to find parking at this location. Since it's downtown Greensboro, I can't fault them for this. Everything at Cincy's was awesome. My friend ordered the chili cheese dogs and has a cinnamon allergy - we didn't know the chili contained cinnamon. The staff was very understanding and quickly made her a new set of dogs free of charge, sans chili. I ordered the 5 way chili and it was excellent! I also tried one of the chili dogs that my friend didn't get to eat and they were incredible. Everything we ordered was fresh, hot and delicious. The menu offers a wide variety which is nice, but I highly recommend trying their chili - it's what they're known for! We also got the brownie pie for dessert and holy brownie. I came here for a birthday lunch. To tell you the truth, this place is not my cup of tea. First the atmosphere was not too good. I didn't enjoy hanging there or feel welcome. Second I did not like the food. I got the famous St. Louis style spaghetti with chili over it (is it Skyline chili maybe?). The chili is too salty and doesn't really taste like chili to me. I love Cincy's Downtown for many reasons. They've been a lunch-time fixture in downtown Greensboro for over thirty years, a hidden gem tucked away on February One Place less than a block off of Elm Street. Sure, their delicious chili served over spaghetti is great -- both the vegetarian variety as well as their signature turkey-beef blend -- but that's not where the menu ends! Stop by for a beef burger, black bean burger, or a hot dog! The staff are a cast of familiar faces who seem to all have worked here since the beginning. Their prices are quite reasonable, too. I was really disappointed in the chilli here, after reading such good reviews. The chilli was not homemade; it was just like the Hormel chilli you get in a can - didn't even seem like real ground beef. I like chunky chilli with beans and tomatoes personally, but couldn't tell it wasn't that kind of chilli because it was loaded with cheese. As with all new dining experiences, I go in with an open mind and non-stratospheric expectations; Cincy's unfortunately let me down. I had heard about Cincinnati's trademark chili oddly served over spaghetti. The peculiarity of this dish instantly got my attention. I ordered my Cincinnati chili 4 Way with Onions which came with chili, thinly shredded blend of white and yellow cheese, raw chopped onions, and spaghetti. Dish itself was room temperature which doesn't work for me; I like my hot foods hot and my cold foods cold. I'd rather have my food come out steaming piping burn-the-top-of-your-mouth hot than room temp. as I can just let the food cool down. The temp. would have also melted the cheese which would have served itself a better purpose than just being void of flavor and seemingly processed and pre-shredded. The chili was not just lacking in heat (temp. and spiciness) but also in flavor. Either my taste buds decided to take a knee on this play or the 7 spices that they advertise on their website missed the bus as well. Even when subtle, spices give dishes some "pop", some "umph" which this unfortunately lacked -- no garlic "snap", no cinnamon no clove "tang" , no cayenne no chili powder "heat". I was comforted that they were happy in obliging my 1/2 meat-chili 1/2 vegetarian-chili as I had read it made it spicier. Again, it unfortunately didn't make it any spicier but I was at least able to try their 2 types of chili. No major comments about the service or decor; unless something astounds or offends, I typically concentrate on just the food. read more

I can't believe I didn't know about this place all these years. I ordered the four way chili in a bowl and when they brought it out, I could smell the Greek spices from the tray. The chili isn't as thick as most but the flavor is great. You can also get it on a hot dog or over spaghetti. The garlic bread is pretty nifty too. This is a hole in the wall kind of place with not a whole lot of atmosphere, but it feels cozy enough to enjoy with friends. The service was good: funny but not overbearing. I had a spicy chicken salad that was great and the right size for lunch. You know how sometimes you order a salad and you get two heads of lettuce? Not the case here, but I did get more dressing than I needed, fortunately it was on the side. The food is very good, not too expensive, and comes out very quickly (no worries about coming here over a lunch hour); however, the best thing about Cincy's is the wait staff.
